Re: 2018 BMW M5(G30)
The BMW M5 still sitting at the dealers exhibition
The new BMW M5. I was lucky to get one.
This BMW sells very well. In the German car forums, the buyer complain that they have already ordered in October 2017, but just now, May/June, they can expect the delivery. (If they’re lucky) Any today ordered M5 will not be delivered before January 2019. (German market)
What happened that I got an M5 anyway?
My dealer, (I’m a customer for years), had a new M5 in his exhibition since 2 days, which he wanted to use as a demonstration car. I was in the shop to mount the summer wheels on my BMW 7 series and saw the brand new M5, which was there completely in my desired equipment. That's exactly how I would have ordered it! Since I know the manager of the dealership because of a different business connection, I was able to proverbially persuade him to sell the car immediately. It was just a stroke of luck.
My new M5 with the color Daytona Grey is of course equipped with carbon roof and ceramic brakes. In addition full leather and Alcantara and the track package, which contains among others the sports exhaust and the speed unlock to 305 kp/h.
The black carbon roof is a nice contrast to the lighter color and fits well to the wheels
I will use the car for business, so the upcoming M5 Competition is out of question for me. The extra power is comparatively marginal, but the suspension is even harder and stiffer.
The acceleration of the Comp. 0-200 kp/h is claimed to be 10.8 sec.
In the latest issue of the German „Sport Auto“ however, the „normal" M5 has already been measured with 3.3 sec. (0-100 kp/h) and 0-200 kp/h with 10.9 sec.
In a comparison test with the E63S+ the German "Autobild" even recorded for 0-200 kp/h a value of 10.15 sec. (!!). I think thats insane and more than enough for a business sedan.

Now to the car itself. The break-in time takes unfortunately 2,000 km. During this time the maximum speed is of 170 kp/h and a maximum rpm of 5.000. Last weekend I was on a short vacation in Austria, u.a. on the Grossglockner High Alps passage. (Who doesn't know: highly recommended). So I was able to cover 800 km.
Always nice to see: the Grossglockner Alps
Despite the break-in time I can already say: the M5 is a fantastic car and it has far exceeded my expectations. Of course I didn’t do a test drive before and only tested the previous model 2 years ago.
The new M5 has made a huge leap in development and this not only refers to the new 4WD, which is possible to completely deactivate, but it affects the entire vehicle. Pleasantly firm and comfortable at the same time in the "Comfort" position of the adaptive suspension. The steering is sporty and very precise, also adjustable in 3 positions.
For everyday use also very pleasant:
The sound with the exhaust flaps CLOSED is always present as a subtle, well-balanced V8 sound without ever being bothered or obtrusive. More rumbling in „Sport“ or "Sportplus" position. (Flaps still closed).
With open flaps and position „SportPlus“ however, you get a heavy thunderstorm, with nice backfire.
Anyone who’s familiar with the tuning of earlier versions of this M-engine (S63 engine in the M5, X5M, M6) knows that BMW didn’t always had a lucky hand in tuning the exhaust systems. The new M5 has done a lot better, but hasn’t lost its typical sound, but much refined.
No question, the AMG E63S has the louder, deeper and more typical V8 sound in any case.
However, since we have a G63 in our garage as well, I can give my ears a bit of deep AMG sound whenever I need it.
The BMW interior is often described as boring. Yes, it's the way you get used to it. In today’s multiple ways to set up of a car like the M5 I am glad that there are no experiments to operate those cars. Everything is located where you expect it, so you can focus on driving, rather than on the operation. If one will call this „boring“ than I like my boring M5.
Finally I’m definitely very satisfied with the M5 so far as that can be said before the the break in period ends.
