Which is the classic Porsche 911 colour?

    Black?
    White?
    Silver?

Re: Which is the classic Porsche 911 colour?

Silver would be the classic colour.

Re: Which is the classic Porsche 911 colour?

Although white was the "official"racing color.

It's been both at different times, afaik...

Re: Which is the classic Porsche 911 colour?

I think the story goes like this:

White was the official German racing color (green for Brits, red for Italians etc), then a German race car was too heavy so they removed the white paint to lessen weight, result was aluminum metal. From that time forward silver became official German racing color.

Re: Which is the classic Porsche 911 colour?

Interesting story, however black is still the hottest one imo.

I think that story is from the era of the Auto Union Silver Arrow (Ferndinand Porsche but pre-Porsche company).

I think White has been Porsche's racing color more recently too (in the 60's)...

Re: Which is the classic Porsche 911 colour?

Traditional racing color for the country is Silver. For Porsche, it would have to be white. RSR's and the like are trypically displayed as bodies in white.

And the story about the Audi's is correct. They found the car was lighter if it ran w/o paint (remember, paints were lead based back then), so they ran it "naked" ...
    Silver is Germany
    Red is Italy
    Blue is France
    White is Japan
    Green is England
Who is Yellow? Or does yellow not signify a country? (It should be Brazil though IMHO).

This story is from the 1934 Mercedes racing team. When racing manager Alfred Neubauer scraped the white colour from the Mercedes-Benz W25 to save 1 kg and reach 750kgs.

Yellow for some reason was the racing colour of Belgium (called speed yellow). They didn't make cars but had many successful drivers.

Re: Which is the classic Porsche 911 colour?

    AFAIK:
    - White is the official german country color (and white were the Porsche racecar's colors consecuently)
    - Silver was allowed "after" the Silver Arrow's incident removing the paint revealind the silver alum body.
    - The Silver Arrows were Mercedes not Auto Union.

1934-1939 the name Silver Arrows (silberpfeile) was given to both Mercedes and Auto Union. The name applied to Mercedes only after the resurrection of german racing in the 1950s.

True. Now we finally have it settled.

Mercedes revived the "Silver Arrow" theme for their current F1 engagement, so it is no coincidence these cars feature a silver base colour as well.

Please note that in the 1930ies, there was a maximum for these racing cars, not minimum weight as of today. These cars were already built extremely light, so there was no other obvious way to remove 1kg within a couple of hours.

Re: Which is the classic Porsche 911 colour?

    OFF TOPIC,

Are there any interesting background or history about BLACK 911?

Re: Which is the classic Porsche 911 colour?

Silver should be considered the "classic" color for any _beautiful_ car.

It's the color design studios use for their clay models. The reflectance and monotone allow the best neutral representation of an object when considering it's _aesthetic_ features. Volumes, shapes, lines, curves, all become most evident with the reflective properties of silver or grey.

So to emphasize a car's sculptural qualities silver/grey would be the best color (design studios can't be wrong).

    FWIW

Didn't know that! I had only heard of the silver arrows when in reference to Mercedes. Learn something new everyday

Recently, this theory was put to doubt by an article in "Motor Klassik". A reputable research with testimony from former motorsport personalities undermines something we all believed was true. Maybe our German Rennteam members could translate this article for our benefit...
