This will have to corrected! (worth reading)

Very interesting , but most worrisome:

Re: This will have to corrected! (worth reading)

going racing just when it costs nothing or very little is from a long time a very important thing for Porsche.... so we may get use to it or ask for a change of a certain mr. WW....

Re: This will have to corrected! (worth reading)

I'm not that concerned with the concern for costs and racing; it's the client treatment that is inexcusable!
Things are going well (or at least have been) for Porsche, but tomorrow is another day.

Re: This will have to corrected! (worth reading)

There has been NO Porsche factory supported racing for years.
    Customer teams campaign the cars.

Pro level racing is a hobby for very wealthy people who have a passion for motorsports and the wallet to pay the bills & campaign a car since sponsorship will not cover the expenses.

Re: This will have to corrected! (worth reading)

    Not exactly true.

The Penske Porsche's are Semi-Manufacturer entries.
That is one of the reasons that Porsche and the ACO are at loggerheads.

Re: This will have to corrected! (worth reading)

Still, as a customer buying extremely expensive parts/cars etc from Porsche, I think porsche should get back to "customer is king" attitude. A story you hear a lot about dealerships also...

Re: This will have to corrected! (worth reading)

    Could not agree more!

Re: This will have to corrected! (worth reading)

Porsche motorsport can provide quite excellent on-site logistics/technical know how, if the price is right and if your team is high profile enough.

But yes, I agree that they only venture into factory supported racing when there is not much investment on their part.

The RS spyder programme goes against this, slightly, the development efforts are unfortunately focused on this car and not the road car programme as strongly as before. Too bad the RS spyder should be racing in a different class that is more competitive.

The real road cars are still selling though, so no need to change this strategy or enter F1 or any other silly marketing excersize/money pit.

Re: This will have to corrected! (worth reading)

The only problem with the RS Spyder program is that it is basically at a dead end.
By this I mean the following:
Porsche entered the LMP2 class as a possible stepping stone to the LMP1 class.
The pro-diesel regulations have ruled out that possibility.
Porsche has however managed to take advantage of the lighter weight (good power to weight ratio) of the LMP2 rules and has managed to take overall wins in the ALMS.
The new ACO (and IMSA) rules have ruled out that possibility as well.
So...what are they doing in LMP2?
Also - in the GT classes they are also in the GT2 class.
Given the above, Porsche has no cars in the "principle" classes, and are loosing competitiveness in the GT2 class.

Furthermore, they have difficulty in producing a 500hp N/A engine. (in order to do that they would need a 4l flat6, and that would mean too much weight at the rear of the car.)
They do not have a mid-engined V8 road going model that they can homologate in order to go racing, so things look very complicated in the near future, unless.......

Re: This will have to corrected! (worth reading)

I saw this attitude building for many years, I sold Porsches for close to 20 years. I watched as all the dedicated Porsche race teams had to leave the sport or leave Porsche to race in LMP1 a few years back. Champion raced the GT1 before its demise and even tried a Porsche engine in a Lola chassis with little help from Porsche factory. When Porsche decided to leave the Prototype class, they wanted Champion to go to GT2. Champion had offers to race with Audi and told Porsche when you come back to racing Prototypes we will come back. WW was so furious with them he wanted to take away their Porsche franchise and was more furious when he found out he could not do this in the USA because of franchise rules. Thanks to Audi, Champion is now one of the largest Audi Dealers in the USA and still the largest Porsche dealer in the world. WW makes all decisions based on making profits, not keeping loyal workers, dealers or clients. He has made Porsche very profittable, yet he has made many people willing to take him out if he ever makes a miscalculation.

Re: This will have to corrected! (worth reading)

Racing as it is done today not only costs a lot but it can even lead to manufacturers getting into deep financial trouble. Ferrari spend a lot true, but they are owned by FIAT, themselves not very healthy, but they are like the Italian national team. Porsche are in a different league moneywise; their team cannot afford to play in the Premier league anymore. However, they are into a number of competitions at national and international level and earn a lot of publicity and respect for that. Thousands folow the VLN in Germany for example and the various 24Hour races around the world, where they are dominant. The success of the Spyder was also very valiant and against expectation.

Re: This will have to corrected! (worth reading)

Much of the diference between PAG and Ferrari comes down to Passion. One maker always had it and hopefully, always will. The other had, lost it, and will probably never get it back.

Re: This will have to corrected! (worth reading)

The Accura's are extremely quick this year, and it is rumored that Audi feel that their biggest challenge (in the ALMS) will come from the Accura's and not the Spyders.
Their is a lot of skepticism around the 2008 997RSR and its capabilities to be competitive against the F430's.
So, we might have the misfortune of not seeing Porsche successful in either of these "secondary" classes.

I just hope that the rumors and skepticism are false and unfounded!
