    2008 Boxster S Delivered

I took delivery of my 2008 Boxster S yesterday. I had a 2006 Boxster S and later sold it for a Lotus Elise. I regretted giving up the Boxster and now I am back. Some of the highlights of the equipment are: PASM, Sport Chrono, Short Shift, and Sport Exhaust... took delivery 5 months after order, and well worth the wait. So very happy to be back behind the wheel of a Porsche.

    Very nice, congrats .

    Re: 2008 Boxster S Delivered

Congrats! Looks fantastic! Curious what your impressions are so far of the short shift, and if you had the standard shifter on your last 987S.

    Re: 2008 Boxster S Delivered

Yes, I had the standard 6-speed shift on my '06 Boxster S, and there is a considerable difference in the throwing distance. I have not yet noticed any more notchiness, balkiness, or hesitation with the '08 factory short-shift. I have read posts that the short shift was much harder to put into gear, especially when cold. Porsche received enough complaints that they removed the short shifter from its customer "build" website. To me, this is a classic example in demonstrating that the best way to find out whether an option is going to work for you, such as PASM, Sport Chrono, or short-shift is to personally try it. I personally like the shorter shift travel, and in short, I would recommend it. I must add that both the '06 and '08 Boxster shifters are considerably superior to my rubbery '07 BMW 335i 6-speed shift, and of course much better than my '06 Lotus Elise shifter, which I thought was going to come off in my hands.

...as they say: there is no substitute The Lotus Elise is a great driver's car, but it does not work as an substitute for the more versatile Boxster, though could be nice as an addition for track use

You ticked the right boxes re the options and I completely agree with you about the short shifter. After 43,000 km in my 987S with the short shifter I don't get why this isn't the stock version.

How about some medication to fight my winter depression - some nice pics from Highway 1 could do the trick

    Re: 2008 Boxster S Delivered

I drove s new slightly more powerful RS60 the other day in the UK (first time driving a RHD Boxster manual) and I loved it! The short shifter was perfect - the car only had 300 miles on the clock and I started it from cold in Mid December and even then it was perfect! By the way, next car will be a Boxster for me too! The wife loves them and I do too! I will keep a Ferrari as well though ; )

...as they say: there is no substitute The Lotus Elise is a great driver's car, but it does not work as an substitute for the more versatile Boxster, though could be nice as an addition for track use

Agreed, the Lotus was a fun car for the track, and for those who may be interested in hearing why I sold my Lotus Elise to get back into a Boxster, here is my story. In 2006 I purchased a new Lotus Elise (Ardent red with tan leather, pictured below). The first 15 minutes in the car, it was an absolute kick, very much like driving a go-kart. I picked up the car in Newport Beach and drove it home to the Bay Area (400 miles). By the time I got home, I was wondering what the heck I had done. I just paid $54,000, for a car that felt one small step up from a kit car. Mind you I just sold a 2006 Boxster S, that did everything so perfectly, I just took it for granted, and thought I would go a notch up for an even purer driving experience with the Lotus Elise. What I found was a car that annoyed the heck out of me everytime I crashed over a bump, I thought the driver or passenger window was going to crack. The shifter felt as if it was going to come off in my hands and just had a very flimsy feel to it. The steering wheel also felt flimsy and had a bit too much flex for my liking. Yes, the car was a kick to drive on the track and on the street, and people would just stop in their tracks and stare at you when you went by, but I just missed the feeling that the Boxster was the complete package to me. The optional $1,400.00 Elise convertible hardtop panel took almost 20 minutes to unscrew and remove and was such a hassle to take off that I loathed putting it back on, and never used it again. Fortunately the Elise also came with a soft top, and that only took about 5 minutes to put two brackets in place and roll out and stretch into place. In contrast the Boxster's convertible top operation is first-rate, and I feel that I am riding in a true convertible rather than a car with a T-top. The Elise's trunk lid had just a flimsy (there's that word again), metal pole to hold it up. In fact, if you opened the trunk too far, there was nothing to stop the trunk lid from crashing onto the C-Pillars and scratch paint. The radio had the worst reception of any car I ever had the pleasure to own. The dealer was of no help and said that because the frame was aluminum it was not optimal for grounding the radio antenna. I could go on, and some will say that I am totally missing the point of what the Lotus is about, but let's just sum it up to say that I am much happier to be driving the Boxster again. Lastly, some have said that I should have waited for the face-lift and direct fuel injection (I have mixed feelings on the planned styling changes), and was not willing to wait for direct fuel injection. I'll wait until Porsche perfects dfi and possibly the paddle-shifter in year 2 or 3 of the facelift, or in the 988. One thing is certain, my biggest regret is that I missed out on almost 2 years of Boxster enjoyment, I didn't want to make it 3 years.

    Re: 2008 Boxster S Delivered

Many congratulations and welcome back to a civilised sports car - I love the guards red / sand beige combination you've chosen.

I don't know anyone else here that's got the sports exhaust - I retro-fitted it to mine and reckon it's worth every cent.

    Re: 2008 Boxster S Delivered

Congratulations! Beautiful car and nice options!

    Re: 2008 Boxster S Delivered

Thank you, and if you ask me the Sport Exhaust is a great feature. I would rather listen to the Sport Exhaust over the Bose Stereo anytime.

    Re: 2008 Boxster S Delivered

Thanks for the short shift review! That is a great spec, PSE and the short shift are 2 options I don't have now that I've been thinking I should probably go with on my next car.

    congrats man !

    nice combination !!

Do you feel any major differences regarding 06 987S engine vs the 295bhp 07-08 987S engines???....We have had a 2007 987S and it was just an amazing , great sound, and great response at any rpm

I have only driven the '08 for about 20 miles and can not go above 4200 rpm's, so I really don't notice that much of a difference. The biggest difference is the sound of the Sport Exhaust, which I did not have on my '06. I must say that I would be happy with either the '06 or '08 Boxster, they are both amazing cars. Just glad to be back.

    VinceSF,

    Fabulous car!

...Does it feel like you got your baby back, or sort of like a new one?

    Re: 2008 Boxster S Delivered

It feels like a combination of both getting my baby back and feeling like a new one, as I made subtle changes to the ordering specs.

such a pretty car, congrats man. the lotus is stunning in its own way though.. holy getting into one really is trouble.. and im like 21!

    Re: 2008 Boxster S Delivered

    Love it...Cool color!

    Re: 2008 Boxster S Delivered

Cayman S chrome exhaust tips, just like mine. Carrera S wheels like my last Boxster S. Guards red with sand beige only narrowly made second choice for me. We do have similar tastes! I guess with the current exchange rates yours was half the price of mine as well.

    Re: 2008 Boxster S Delivered

Current exchange rates for the U.S. Dollar are terrible right now; however, Porsche has seemingly held the price line by raising the base price only slightly over the past few years. Also, as you may recall, we have exchanged pictures of our cars at the end of an RS 60 thread, my guards red '06 in front of the Golden Gate Bridge, and your beautiful blue Boxster S. That cobalt / ocean blue combination is stunning.

The good news is that both can be retrofitted.

    Re: 2008 Boxster S Delivered

You have the right idea DC, I should probably stop thinking about what I might do in a year or two and make my '06 even more fun right now!

I would agree with that as the '06 is an incredible car.

    Re: 2008 Boxster S Delivered

Well, it's been one week since I have taken delivery on my car, and I am thoroughly amazed at how beautifully built this car is. After taking delivery of my Lotus Elise in '06, I stopped looking for flaws, as it was too depressing. My '07 Honda S2000 was put together very nicely and made the Lotus look like it was a kit car; however, the Porsche tops them all for quality.

    Re: 2008 Boxster S Delivered

    Great color! I love it!

Why Red is not so popular?

I also have a 2001 JDM S2000, how does it campare with the 987S?

    Re: 2008 Boxster S Delivered

I had a 2003 S2000 as well as a 2006 and 2007 S2000. The Boxster is just a different car. Much better low end grunt, better ride without sacrificing performance, quicker, faster, handling more neutral, fit and finish comparable (both are to a high standard in my opinion). What the Honda has over the Boxster is value. You can buy a brand new 2008 S2000 for $33,000 out the door, and the Boxster will depreciate in value by that much in 5 years. But quite frankly, the Boxster is a superior car, and I really care more about what the car does day to day than the value tomorrow.

    Re: 2008 Boxster S Delivered

Just a follow up on the Porsche Sport Exhaust.    I have owned the car for a little over one year now and the Sport button is in the "on" position 95% of the time, as I like the hyper-feeling of sport chrono and the incredible sound from the engine/exhaust.   I know that many feel it a waste of money, and yes it adds absolutely -0- to your resale value, but as far as enjoyment value, it's tops on my list.   Also, if you look at the evolution of pictures on this thread, you will note that I made 2 changes, the most notably 19" to 18" wheels.   I've kept original 19" wheels for the next owner, but am riding on the 18" wheels as they soak up the potholes a bit better on poor San Francisco streets.   On smooth highway roads, there is no difference in ride quality with 18's and 19's, and yes the 19's  look great, but the 18's are nothing to frown upon.   Lastly, the all red tail-lights were available much cheaper from the Parts Department  than if I ordered them from the factory, and are extremely easy to install, plus I now own a spare set of taillights, just in case....
