Attention BMW 5, 6, 7 series and X5 owners with V8/V12!
Right now an urgent safety recall is going on for all BMW 5-series, 6-series, 7-series and X5-series with V8 and V12 engines. 4000 cars are affected worldwide.
Affected are cars which have been registered between May 13th and July 12th 2004. Unfortunately this is valid for Germany only, owners from other countries (worldwide!) should contact their dealers immediately if they own a newer car which has been bought in this period of time, slightly before that period or even later (dealer stock car).
All affected owners will be contacted by their dealers but it can't hurt if owners go to their dealers to check if their cars are affected.
The reason for the recall is a possible failure of the engine electronics, resulting in a sudden engine shutdown and the resulting failure of the power steering and the power brake booster at the same time which can result in an accident.
Affected owners are asked not to drive their cars anymore.
The solution seems to be the exchange of the engine control unit.
Again: if you're not sure if your car is affected or not, do not drive it anymore until you spoke to your dealer.
