    997 C2S Cab: Battery Dead

    Hi Guys,

    I wanted to go and take the 911 out for a drive this weekend but when I tried to start the car it would turn on but as soon as I turn the ignition to fire up the engine it would just go dead. So I put a charger on the battery overnight and the following afternoon it was doing the same thing. My question is how a battery goes from fine to finished so quickly?

    Last time I drove the car was 2 weeks ago.

    The same thing happened to me once, altough it didn't happened on a porsche or a ferrari, since batteries are produced by other companies than the car manufacturers, my explanation seems relevant.

    The car I drove then was (and still is) my daily driver and started always without a problem. This one time I get in, turn the key into the preheating position (yes, it's a diesel ) and everything works well. As soon as I turned the key further I heard a click and everything was gone. There wasn't even enough power left to make the interior light burn (it's a 5W light) whilst the key was in the preheating mode..

    So just like in your case, my battery died on the spot

    My dealer explained to me that this has something to do with modern battaries: it seems that sometimes something can just break (off) inside of the battery rendering it completely useless. It can even happen on new batteries, altough it is much less common...

    No go and get a new battery, so that you can enjoy your 911

    How many miles do you have on the car? When was it built? Porsche is not supporting warranty claims if you have less than 6000 miles a year on your car,--as it should be. Drive it!

    Really? Never heard of that! I can imagine Ferrari doing the opposite! No warranty if you, drive in the snow, rain, on an abnormally hot day, windy day, a national holiday - too much traffic - or do more than 3,000 miles a year

    Yes, I remember something like that too. We're supposed to notify our dealerships if we put fewer than a certain number of miles a year on it.

    Kinda difficult to keep up with Porsche's BS expectations if you have more than a few cars like I do.



    Porky Tokyo, you forgot the even and odd numbered days restrictions too; if car breaks on an odd day it's not covered for electronics, even days cover everything else except engine, which if engine breakdown happens on a odd day isn't covered if it's an electronic problem with the engine..

    Unfortunately all too often the dealers use the warranty book to deny battery claims - that's where you'll find the 6,000 mile statement.

    Unfortunately, driving the car every two weeks with no trickle charger on in between, is a form of battery abuse. This practice will absolutely shorten a battery's life. Get that pricey Porsche unit or an equivalent, It really does work.

    Hi Dan,
    That's a first! Hearing they don't support warranty if you don't drive the car

    My car one of the first shipments. I bought the car in April 2005. It now has 8500 miles on the odo.

    My car one of the first shipments. I bought the car in April 2005. It now has 8500 miles on the odo.



    So in nearly 3 years you have amassed some 8500 miles. (Why did you buy this car?) There's your answer. You're not driving it enough.

    Mike - your car was the exact inspiration for what I ordered except the wheels...thanks! Sorry to hear about the battery but I guess all you had to do was jump in one of your other fine machines. My guess, also, is that you probably don't lock your car if it's in a secure garage. Locking the car even with the top or windows down will greatly extend the battery life because it goes into a "dormant" mode and pulls much less current with the doors locked. My 06 is 2 years & 3 months old now with 41K miles and no regrets of color combo except when it's time to wash it!

    Haha! I drive it once a week, although it is just distances of around 20-30 miles I've been doing this for 3 years and it has never just gone dead in 2 weeks.

    Glad I was of help when specc'ing your car I didn't know that if you lock the car it would extend the battery life I thought it would be the other way round. You are correct though, I never lock the cars while they are in the garage.

    If you go to dealer have them check your current draw.

    Mine had a defective PCM with a high current draw and ruined my battery.

    You might have the same or similar thing going on.

    Mine was an early 2006 997S. What's funny is even after they replaced the PCM which had a stuck CD player which supposedly drained the battery, my car continued acting funny at start up. Some days it seemed like it didn't have juice-to-spare when starting engine when cold. Other days it seemed to have enough. So..., I "solved" the problem by always using a battery maintainer unless I was going to use the car the next day. So I never really got to the bottom of the problem, never had time or ambition to check the current draw myself (believe it or not).

    My point: there may be more than one way for these cars to run the battery down abnormally when parked. I'd make SURE they show you the current draw reading, or tell them you'll check it yourself when you get home (which is actually cheap and easy to DIY anyway).
