    Mazda RX8 wins Rolex24 GT class

    A stunning (and comfortable) victory for a Mazda RX8 over a packed field of 911GT3s at Daytona's Rolex24!

    Once again Porsche is left behind.

    Did the Corvettes get bumped from GT1 or are they in both GT classes now?

    I do not know if GM/Miller will compete in GT1 at ALMS - given that they had no competition. I suspect they will, though, in preparation for Le Mans.

    GT2 is a new entry by LG Motorsports with race-prepared C6s. Take a look at this Sebring pre-season test (video).

    Mind you Daytona GT class is for the GT3 Cup only. ALMS GT2 is for the GT3 RSRs. So I am not sure what others will present in the ALMS GT2 class to compete against the RSR, except Ferrari F430GT of course).

    Quiet is kept, the Rotary engine is pretty stout and actually performs better than piston engines the higher it revs. The faster it spins, the more energy is carried into the next cycle.

    That's the benefit of not have connecting rods, pistons moving up and down that have to recovery and reverse their own internia, cams, etc. etc.

    Did you know the RX8 has a 500lb advantage over the Porsche GT3. This weight advantage was given to them to help equaliize the cars. All the series, ALMS included, are trying to equalize the cars like NASCAR to make racing more exciting. They (ACO) added weight to the LMP2 RS Spyders last year after they won so many races overall, the ACO want the LMP1 to have a 1.5% advantage over the LMP2. At one time the ACO was going to decrease the intake restrictors on the RS Spyders to slow them down, don't know if that happened though...anyone know???

    Looks like they're trying to use a "Success Ballast" system like some of the smaller series overseas use.

    I'm on the fence about this ... It does make for a more exciting and competitive race and that is essentially what keeps a series alive (Note wanning F1).

    Then again, it doesn't exactly help the sport or is fair to penalize better engineered teams. Sort of stiffle innovation.

    I kind of like seeing the RX8 running well, the rotary engine is very unique as is the Porsche Boxer flat inverted 6 behind the rear axel in the 911.

    Guys,
    First - The Mazda was a tube framed car and not racing with a normal production chassis.
    Second - It had used 3 rotors instead of the normal 2.
    Third - It was not really a GT car, but more like a DTM car.

    As for the weight added to the Spyder, it is as follows:
    The ACO has decreased the weight of the LMP1 cars by 25 Kg's and increased the weight of LMP2 cars by 50Kg's (they really don't want the Spyders competing with the diesels.
    IMSA (ALMS) has not been so radical , and they have maintained the minimum weigh of the LMP1 but increased the weight of the LMP2's by 25 Kg's.
    The ACO has further reduced the fuel tank capacity of the LMP2 cars by 10 liters. (they want to make sure that the Spyders cant be competitive in any way, at Le Mans)

    german pioneering by way of the wankel, but the japanese have been the only subscribers and refiners of the theory.

    Didn't know the RX8 was a tube frame chassis and a extra rotor....thanks for the info. Also think there were some other cars in this race becides the RX8, GT3 and Pontaics, remember a few Corvettes, M3 and as mentioned 430.

    Many years ago when the 911 Turbos ran at LeMans the ACO chocked them out (restrictor wise) kind of like what they are doing with the RS Spyders. I would love to see the true factory Acuras and Spyders at Le Mans against the factory Audi and Pugeou. I think we will see M3, Lexus, Vipers and Corvettes in the GT2 class this year which will be fun.

    The GT cars from General Motors are tube frame chassis from what why I remember. This ALMS season should be a good one for the GT2 class runners. Hurry up and bring me Sebring!

    Seems the GT3 and 430 are the "closest" to a GT
    car you can actually buy at the dealer.

    You forgot the Z06 - Aluminum space frame and wall-of-torque engine. Just wait for the C6 performance this year in GT2 at ALMS.

    I know the Z06 and Vipers have been running in Europe and haven't fared very well. I think a Viper started running in GT2 late last year and didn't do well either. I'm sure they will adjust the rules this year to try and make the cars somewhat equal as they have done with the RX8. Should be a fun year. Can't wait to head down to Sebring again.
