    Test of E55 AMG

    Hi there,

    in german tv there was a short test of E55, RS6 and M5.
    There were several testcriteria, one of them was the sprint to 100 km/h and 200 km/h.
    M5 and RS6 did it in around 17 seconds - not too slow compared to the 16,0 sec. of a 360 Modena or GT3.

    And the E55 AMG?
    14,6 sec.!!

    Times will be changing on german autobahn...

    Well, a S600 limousine does 0-200 kph in the same time.

    Times already have changed and I wonder how long will Porsche accept this power overkill from Mercedes.
    The next generation 996 has to have at least 360 HP and the next generation Turbo at least 500 HP to be able to outrun or at least be able to cope with the newest Mercedes models.

    I know this "bla bla" about "Porsche is a sportscar and Mercedes is not" but most people drive on the street and not on the race track and it is a shame that I can't outrun a S600 in my Turbo on the Autobahn. So why buying a Turbo anymore?

    although i am as well very impressed by the latest merc engines, i have to say that there always have been high powered limousines around. also ten years ago, the M5 developed a lot more horsepower than the 911 carrera of that era. or i remember a friend of my father who was always telling stories about "porsche hunting on the autobahn" with his alpina B12 6.0 biturbo. and let us not forget that a S600 is not really cheap. but how often do you meet this car in traffic? IMHO the real problem these days is, that the performance of the mass market models has risen extremly. the audi TT or BMW 330i is capable of making 0-100 kph in nearly 6 secs, ordinary (but torquey) commonrail diesel vehicles are blocking the left lane on the autobahn and even a "entry level" car like the mini cooper S is capable of at least 220 kph vmax. so merc does the right thing to keep the mass market distanced

    you're right - the commonrail-diesels are not bad.
    it's not easy to overtake a 330d up to 220 km/h, but it's possible.
    the diesel has to give up at this speed and i shift into 6th.
    but there is no possibility for me to mess with a E55 or S600.

    and rc: the E55 is 0,6 sec. faster up to 200 km/h then the S600.
    and more important: it looks much better (IMHO) and costs Euro 40.000,-- less!!

    MB have to price the car higher than E55 or SL55 to avoid competition .... That for sure won't be cheap

    ...I got fooled by an article from a german car magazine.

    AMG will definetely not build a CLK 55 AMG with the supercharged V8. Got this info today when I met a good friend.
