    Rock Chips

    HI all,
I am deciding to how to put on the clear bra.
Full bumper for sure. What about full hood and fenders?
Where do you guys usually got chips? hood area? fenders?

    Thank you

    Re: Rock Chips

I have clear bra on ALL of my cars. Even my Mini

I normally do the side mirrors, half of the front hood (depending on the height of the car). Up till half the front fender and I've been having happy chip-free motoring since

Make sure you take it to a reputable installer, the film only looks as good as who is applying it. I made that mistake with my F430 and had to get it redone elsewhere.

    Re: Rock Chips

You should do the full hood and fenders. This will minimize the edges. For full fenders, there will be no edge line and for full hood you will have a 3" edge line at the top of both side.

    Re: Rock Chips

    so basically, the whole front....?!

    Re: Rock Chips

    yes

    Re: Rock Chips

That's what I have...the entire front end and I couldn't be happier with the results.

    Re: Rock Chips

Do the full hood. I made the mistake of not doing the full hood and will probably have to repaint soon.

    Re: Rock Chips

what about fenders? anyone got chips on fenders?

    Re: Rock Chips

I just ordered mine and had them install on the entire hood, fenders and doors (hate door dings ). It only cost an extra 700 or so (after asking for a discount) to add all of that. I asked about doing the entire car but they wanted an extra 2500 for the last third which I thought was too much.. Car arrives next week so I hope they did a good job. They use and Avery product which I've heard no one mention so I hope its good...

    Re: Rock Chips

you sure that the bra can prevent door dings? I am not sure if people's SUV bang on your door, the bra can help.

    Re: Rock Chips

Geez, the _full_ hood? Maybe half if you're really concerned. I've seen it (on grey and silver) and the line ain't that bad IMO. I mean you're gonna get many chips on bumpers, a few on the lower hood and verrrry few on the upper hood so where do you draw the line?

I saw a DIY sement on TV too long ago to remember where and who. It demonstrated that you can fix paint chips perfectly yourself! Paints are very forgiving nowadays and can be used as "filler" and can be leveled and polished. Soooo, if you get a few chips on your hood you can DIY perfectly if you're handy.

Apparently it's not just daubing a tiny clump of paint on there and leaving it like that anymore.

OTOH, there's too many on a bumper to keep up with so a bra is a good idea there.

    Re: Rock Chips

What about fenders? usually any chips on fenders?

    Re: Rock Chips

I did the full hood, half fenders and mirrors. I don't like the look of the fender line and wish I had done the whole fender. The line isn't that noticeable except when dusty, but next time it will be the whole fender - just for cosmetic reasons - or perhaps nothing at all on the fender. The hood looks great with full coverage.

My 996 had no bra and was peppered with small chips on the bumper and lower half of the hood. The top part of the hood, mirrors and fenders had a few chips which were easy to touch up with paint and langka. That's why I could live without coverage on the fenders or mirrors. The lower hood and bumper took the brunt of the chips and given the number of chips, it was almost impossible for me to achieve a clean enough finish with touch up paint. A solid color may be ok, but with metallic paint, touch up takes too much time and the results did not work for me. Thus the clear bra on the 997.

    Re: Rock Chips

Ya, I was only going to get the edge done to prevent dings on the edge (which dumb compact spaces make it too easy to do) but went for the full door to prevent the dumb line (which is the main reason for going full on fender and hood). I was hoping that it would help "some" with when if someone accidentally dinged me.

Not so easy to match some metallic paints, even if you get it level using something like Langka. It is almost impossible to match the paint "color" (metal flakes don't necessarily match existing paint). Ask any detailer and they will tell you that it is possible to do a decent job on solid colors but almost impossible to match dings with metallic colors. With my previous solid red and white cars it was relatively easy to touch them up with great results. My silver cars are impossible. Haven't done a touch up yet that matched.

    Re: Rock Chips

Yes, do the fenders around the lights if possible. It will not ever stop door dings but when you do get a door ding (which can generally be corrected for less than $50) it will prevent the paint from being chipped as well - not very cheap to fix - so do the doors if you are worried.

Why does Porsche not offer this type of protection STOCK? I have many other cars and it seems like the Porsche has the softest paint and it the most easily chipped in the front - may be the speed I drive though.
    Peace - drive right
