Mercedes calls R-Class a "lesson learned"

The controversial Mercedes-Benz R-Class "was a lesson learned," said Daimler sales executive Klaus Maier. Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche also weighed in on the situation, saying the minivan-SUV-crossover has "definitely not lived up" to expectations, according to trade publication Automotive News Europe.

Mercedes originally targeted sales of 25,000 per year in the United States, the report claims. Last year, R-Class sales were 18,000 and falling (a 28 percent decline).

Maier said it was a mistake to assume the unusual vehicle would appeal to a wide range of customers. Meanwhile, Zetsche said Daimler is in the early stages of thinking about a replacement for the R-Class. He said it could be a direct replacement, but there's also the distinct possibility of something totally different.

Recently, BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer announced his company had cancelled plans for a rival to the R-Class, saying the vehicle would "not fit BMW's image."

Re: Mercedes calls R-Class a "lesson learned"

Might sell more if it wasn't so ugly! I would have bought one as our family car.

Re: Mercedes calls R-Class a "lesson learned"

^^I kinda agree with you. Probably the biggest reason for its failure was the fact that it looks soooo horrible. Perhaps if it had better exterior styling it would have sold much better.

Re: Mercedes calls R-Class a "lesson learned"

The concept car looked great, and then they softened it up for production.

Re: Mercedes calls R-Class a "lesson learned"

I would have gotten a R63 if the car is a bit taller and roomier inside, I have been resisting a minivan purchase because everything on the market right now is too 'powerless'.

The R63 sounded great on paper, a powerful people mover but it's just not roomy enough to be a proper people mover, only seats 6, with 2 of them cramped in the back row, with little room behind the 3rd row. Golf clubs don't even fit behind the 3rd row.

I think if MB ever goes around doing a GL63, I will probably be all over it, powerful, roomy for 7 and with a big trunk. Alas, after the R-Class, their marketing people shot down the plans for a GL63

In the mean time, I have created my own version of a powerful people mover, it's called the 997TT+ML63, with my son joining me in the TT and my wife hauling people, mainly the inlaws, and stuff in the ML63:)

Re: Mercedes calls R-Class a "lesson learned"

Any comments/thoughts you can share on your experience with the ML63 Whoopsy? Something I'm considering in a few months.

If I had to guess BMW will be the next to "learn a lesson"... I am thinking of the x6...

Re: Mercedes calls R-Class a "lesson learned"

I had a test drive a few months ago in the GL500 as well as the R-Class, both drive lovely however the GL500 is too refined, too big and not sporty enough (OIM), the R-Class is plain awful. I have only seen a handful driving here.

I fully agree with the BMW X6 comment, I am still on the list of people being interested as the twin turbo 4.4 V8 sounds very appealing but I am really struggling with the shape (between a 4x4 and people carrier)

    The short answer:

I have to make an effort to grab the keys to the TT but my hands are programmed to grab the ML63's keys first.

    Did that answer your question?

Within the city, I get 90% of the performance of the TT in the ML63. It's also just another SUV to the cops while the TT is a cop magnet.

Re: Mercedes calls R-Class a "lesson learned"

If you want a quick people mover, wait for the Audi Q7 V12 TDi - hauls ass and can seat 8 people

Re: Mercedes calls R-Class a "lesson learned"

I tink the R-Class is just way to huge. This car is so huge that it seems to be to much ugly. And indeed, the front looks awful.

Anyway - the concept was great but not with this look! Further, for this amount of money you get a nice decent S-Class which is a superb car. So if you dont need the space of a truck, why to go for a R-Class?

Re: Mercedes calls R-Class a "lesson learned"

When the R-Class was introduced to the market, I thought that Merc is completely nuts.

Then in summer last year I needed a decent family transport for some vacation issues and rented the R Class for 2 months... we drove to the sea with 6 people on board, we went to the beach (4WD!) with 4 adults and 3 kids and lots of beach accessoires... to make it short: it was great, we all loved the car.

And that it is kind of "ugly" or "different" is, well, quite nice if you get used to it. It's not one of those wannabe-intimidating SUVs like GL or Q7... it's actually a very appealing car IMHO!

Re: Mercedes calls R-Class a "lesson learned"

    Hmmm. Vacations... two months...

    I like your life style

The "2 months" was sadly just with regards to the length of the rental contract

WOW, quite surprised to hear your response. Might have to hold off on test drive as I need to do some other things before i do that. Cheers

Cheers Mike, but I just don't find the Q7 appealing at all. Just doesn't look proportionally correct. Pricing on ML63 vs Cayenne TT is quite odd over here compared to other markets for some reason. In UK it appears they are virtually identical in price, yet here the ML63 is around $150k compared to $225k for Cayenne.

I highly doubt it.... If the butt ugly X3 and 1 series can sell, then the X6 is going to be a big success.
