I like the interior and IMO the interior would be timeless IF ordered with full leather and without the "wart".

    Re: 997 FACELIFT

    I like the wart.

    Warts grow on you...

    Re: 997 FACELIFT

It is possible that with the passage of time and the development of yet more Porsche SUV's (Roxster?) and hybrids and sedans (Panamera mini?), the 997 will be lamented along with all other water cooled mass produced Porsches as representing the sell out of Porsche from a truly original and unique sportscar manufacturer to the next BMW. (Does anyone really think that a nice condition 2008 BMW 323 will be a "classic" in 40 years? Perhaps that's 69's point but I find it hard to see in that specific context). In that setting, the more rare Porsches might be the ones that are truly valued in future years.

There's so much speculation that its easy to be wrong, and many scenarios can seem plausible when the time line is so long. I can't deny that as much as I prefer my 997S now, I feel confident that it is the 993 that will be a "classic".

Maybe any or all of the last gasoline powered performance cars will be classics in a dull world of battery powered computer controlled satellite monitored cars on auto pilot. . .

    Re: 997 FACELIFT

I don't think all cars in history become classics because many are just too simple. My 2005 ford focus, will most definitely not become a classic for sure! But why? I think it might be if i'd not drive it and keep it for 60+ years and then the world would have a perfect sample of what was back in the day a basic shopping car:) BUT who buys a car only to park it inside somewhere.

Regarding Silver Bullet, a 08 BMW 323 will most definitely become a classic in 40 years time! Just think about the e30 BMW for instance. Thats a classic already, and its bottomed out in price right now but you will be able to watch its price rise in the next decades because less and less samples with low milage are left.

My point is for cars to become classics they have to mean something in the technological are, they have to have some social significance in order to have a certain element of historical evidence. Any car having new technology, new engines, new design, new features could achieve classic status. On top of that a car that sold really well could also achieve the same. Think about the succesful mazda miata! that will be a classic for sure.

    Re: 997 FACELIFT

My dealer - bought three cars from him in 5 years, good mate as well as my dealer has told me that he has nothing on the PDK but the power up and subtle changes and new DFI or whatever its called is a definite...Still don't believe that the PDK is going to be released - wouldn't surprise me if Porsche released it like Feb 2009 or something....

    Re: 997 FACELIFT

It would be disappointing to not have PDK by now. PDK is vital to the facelift I believe.

    Re: 997 FACELIFT

i have heard nothing about the pdk too. but that doesnt matter me i still want a stick 911 and the DI system is the major thing for facelift.

    Here PDK has been confirmed.

    Re: 997 FACELIFT

The facelifted 997 and the new C6 will have the same rims !!

That is a relief! I assume it is 6 speed, which is fine. I just hope it is a PDK box that can handle a good amount of power.

The headlamp is EVOLVED from the 993, which in turn was evolved from its predecessors... The 911 has forever been a subtle evolution, with only the 996 standing out as a major step in a different direction. The 997, to me, was Porsche getting the design "back on the evolutionary track".

FWIW, the headlamp for the 996 986 HAD to be a one-piece slide-in job because _cost_ was a problem!

Seems hard to imagine but just a few short years ago Porsche's survival anxieties drove styling features like the headlamps.

You'd be surprised!!! And yes, it's the "fluke-ish" circumstance that someone would just "preserve" a simple grocery-getter, that makes it just about as rare as a flippin Enzo 60-years down the road... Don't misunderstand me, I didn't say "as valuable" or "as classic", just "as rare".

Sometimes it's the cars that you LEAST EXPECT to see at a car show, 50 years down the road, that are the biggest crowd-pleasers, as the mere fact that an example of something like that having "survived" has an entertainment factor. People smiling, laughing even, and all saying something to the effect of "how about that, I remember when those were what everybody drove, the every-man's car... I haven't seen one in must be 30 years....".

It's like that Beagle winning the big dog show recently... I'm sure there were uptight ladies with groomed Maltese and Poodles, going "harumph" and rolling their eyes.... Good for the Beagle!!
