Carbon fiber wheels look really cool. I wonder why such wheels aren't available? Maybe because carbon fiber has a reputation of failing suddenly and catastrophically. That happens on racing bicycles from time to time.
Any materials experts out there who can fill us in on why carbon fiber automobile wheels aren't seen in the marketplace?

I think part of it is also repairability and water ingress. If you hit a curb, the CF will delaminate, just like glass fibre parts. If that happens, and you don't repair that, water can soak the material, having a dtrimental effect on the strength... Could be one of the reasons.

I believe there are some on the market already. But they're done by SEMA types, not real tuners.
The reason is quite easy to understand. Carbon fiber is a fiber. It's very resistant to compression and extension as long as the pressure is applied on the same axis as the thread.
However, if the pressure is applied from any other direction (e.g. from the side), it is very brittle. That's why using carbon fiber wheels (outside of SEMA) would be very dangerous: one pothole in a curb and your wheel is gone.

I do know a company who performs these jobs on various objects, including wheels. I, in fact, discovered them due to a Porsche Boxster outfitted with such rims at my local dealership. They apply a CF sheet onto the existing rims, so structural consequences do not apply.
I really appreciate the graphite colour (bar the CF pattern), looks very good in correlation with white cars.

The Koenigsegg CCX has them. 
Wheels / Brakes
The optional ceramic 382 mm front discs are coupled to 8 - piston callipers and in the rear the 362 mm size is retained with 6 piston callipers. The optional industry first carbon fibre wheels save another 3 kg per wheel compared to the already lightweight magnesium wheels that come as standard. The ceramic discs save another 2 kg per wheel, giving the Koenigsegg CCX lower unsprung weight than any other super car.
