I Found THE Mute Button for PCM: It's Sooo German!

Remember the post (or part of a post) sometime ago about lack of mute button on PCM? Supposedly you had to buy the multifunction wheel to get one.

We non-MFW owners were perplexed as to why the existing mute button was so cumbersome and useless. Some guys were quite disappointed. I was personally p*ssed about it.

Well, today Gentleman I believe I found it!

You have the CD running full blast and the phone rings, what do you do?

    wait for it...,

    You hit the "off" button!

Say the call you got was a wrong number and then...,

Hit the "on" button (yes, same button).

    Guess what?

CD starts up exactly where it was stopped!

    WOW!

I believe this is NOT mentioned in the manual since in the minds of it's writers (God bless them) it is so "obvious" that only fools wouldn't figure it out!

Hopefully my PCM is like your PCM (2007 TT). If it is: Enjoy your new GT freedom!

Go ahead and flame me if you knew this and didn't bother to tell the rest of us.

Re: I Found THE Mute Button for PCM: It's Sooo German!

My mute button solution was always to turn the volume knob counter-clockwise.

Re: I Found THE Mute Button for PCM: It's Sooo German!

By hitting the "OFF button" you mean pressing the volume nob? thats what I always have done instinctively, it turns off the PCM screen, and turns it back on as it was before, music point, screen displayed, ect. Never new the was a mute button issue

Yes press the on/off button and if a CD is playing it effectively goes into "pause" as the sound goes off.

In the PCM manual (don't have mine now) the _official_ mute button requires several steps to activate which one may rightfully conclude renders it useless and absurd. Therefore the issue came to be discussed here related to the inadequacies of the PCM.

Yes, but by merely turning it counterclockwise to lower volume to zero you will lose your place on the CD (it keeps playing).

To avoid confusion: in my BMW when playing a CD you hit the mute button and the CD goes into _pause_ as the volume goes off.

Now it's clear (to me at least ) that Porsche has the same __convenient__ function when the CD is playing: push the on-off button.

Re: I Found THE Mute Button for PCM: It's Sooo Ger

By turning off the PCM you turn off Navigation - so it won't announce that you're about to miss the exit for that important meeting, which the phone call was probably giving you the last-minute briefing for.

Rotating the volume button hard left, and then also hitting Stop on my iPod is the way to go.

Sorry, MMD. I misunderstood. It sounds like you are looking for a pause feature instead of a mute.

Anyways, slightly off topic. Anybody have a problem where the PCM doesn't remember where it left off? I.e., you were listening to the radio stations, turn off the car. Start it up a few minute later and the CD is playing? It happens quite often for me.

The 'off' button also works to disable traffic reports. E.g., when a CD is playing while the traffic program is enabled and a traffic report interrupts the music just press the 'off' button. That stops the traffic report and the CD continues at the position it was interrupted.

Re: I Found THE Mute Button for PCM: It's Sooo Ger

It took me about 9 - 12 months of ownership, and a lot of fiddling around with the buttons on the PCM, to note the mute button under the Audio section of the PCM. If I want to just watch mileage, etc., I hit the mute button under the Audio section of the PCM and then hit the button for displaying mileage, etc.

I will readily admit that this may be a bit difficult if you are listening to music and get a lot of calls on your cell phone while driving (I don't, for a variety of reasons I don't need to waste your time on), so I have a ready solution to the problem.

It's annoying that you can't actually turn the radio / CD off whe using the navigation. I'm just glad I didn't specify the telephone module, it seems from comments here that it's $hite and that's without the hassle of having two SIM cards. Not as good as a simple Bluetooth connection.

Actually you can...you can set the differential volume between the audio and navigation so that you turn the audio down to zero and still get the voice prompts from the navigation. Took me a while to figure it out...but it works well once set up. Good luck

I'll go have a twiddle. Cheers

Many times while listening to a CD, if I press the volume button to turn the system off, instead of the CD resuming play where I left it, I find it a few songs ahead in proportion to how long it has been since I turned it off. Sometimes I find it in the middle of a selection, 5 songs ahead etc. The sometimes, only sometimes, I do find it where I left it. I may be doing something wrong so any input is appreciated. Regards.

Hummmm, makes me think there's differences in PCMs (?!).

I had a 2006 997S and never "found" the mute button function of the on-off knob.

Only with my current 2007 TT did I find this out. Makes me think my earlier PCM didn't have this ability since I've been motivated to find a decent mute button since I got the 997S.

Interesting, because i've come across this too. It seems that when the power is off, the system is still on ironically. The function serves as an instant power up as opposed to the long cold boot that the system makes when you first start up the car.

You can also tell that the PCM system is running by a very subtle high pitched sound from the speakers. If you don't run the PCM for a while after its turned off (or at all from start) then it turns off completely.

    Regards

IF you had sprung for the multi-functional steering wheel this wouldn't even be an issue. You simply press the volume button on the wheel and its muted.

Not a question of "springing for it," for me was a question of which wheel was less bad looking.

When you press MFW mute button again does CD start playing where it left off? IOW, is "mute" button also "pause" button?

Re: I Found THE Mute Button for PCM: It's Sooo Ger

I didn't know it was that easy until reading your post. I was previously going to the menu in PCM. So eager to drive I didn't read the small print. I find PCM straight forword and easy to navigate.
