    The small doors of the 959


    Hello !!!!!

    I have a question.
    Seeing some pictures of the legendary Porsche 959, has noticed that some 2 "small door" (as the petrol tank) in the 2 sides of the car.

    And in some other photos, only has this small opening on one side. On the other side does not have.

    What is the difference? What is the use for these "small doors"?

    ...the thired car looks like a 930. this would mean 959s have the tank on the right, regular 911s the left side...

    But the tank of 959, is in front hood. True?

    The following 4 pictures are the only OFFICIAL 959 pictures I could find, so we can be sure these are real 959's.

    Picture 1 shows a hatch on the front hood, and a hint of what could be a hatch on the right rear fender.

    Picture 2 is useless with regard to your question, I think.

    Picture 3 shos a hatch on the right rear fender.

    Picture 4 shows a hatch on the front hood, and one on the left rear fender.

    Concluding; a 959 has three of those hatches. I expect the one on the front fender to be oil refill? and probably the two on the fenders can be for refuelling.
    However, I though that 911's from those days had the fuel hatch on the front, and an oil hatch at the rear, didn't they?

    Good catch. I honestly have no idea. I don't know why the tank hatch is on the right side on some cars, and the opposite on other cars.

    @bostonmini:
    The third car is not a 930. On all 911s, the gas tank hatch is on the left front fender.
    (well, to be pedantic, the 1972 vintage did also have an oil tank hatch on the right rear fender. Hilarity ensued so fast Porsche nixed that one year after! )

    @Joost: I have yet to see a 959 with a gas tank hatch on both sides.


    Edit: come to think of it, I don't even know for sure whether the rear fender hatch is for the oil tank - in which case it'd be that hatch on the hood. Consistent with other 911s, but very inconvenient! Not to mention risky, since the rear fender hatch would be for the oil tank (Exhibit A: 1972 Carrera ).

    Question difficult.

    Forgot to comment.
    With 959 silver and black, has a hatch of the 2 sides. Right and left. And also hood hatch in the front.

    In the 959 red, has not hatch on either side, only the front of hood.

    And seeing, you see that the tank of gasoline is at hood. Now left knowing only use for the two hatches side of the car.

    In picture 2 of Joost, you see a hatch on the right, but does not appear anything referring to it in the design.

    Strange...

    Are you sure those hatches are for the gas on the rear fender? Might be andy maintenance hatch?

    About the hatches in the side, I know a nothing.
    Only know that the hood, and the fuel tank ...

    I have a 959 there are 3 filler cap on the comfort type 959 and 2 on the sport model the left rear cap is to fill the hydraulic fluid the right is motor oil the front gaz the sport didn"t have hydraulic suspension that is why there are only 2

    Thanks DJC! Think that clears it up.
    Can you shed some light on your 959? I thought it was really tough if not impossible to import them into the USA?

    Also, I would love to see some pics of the car... it is such an awesome car! Would be nice to see some shots.

    Guess that solves it, straight from the "horses mouth" Would mind posting some pics DJC? I love the design of the 959

    Great know a fellow South African owns a 959, CGT etc. that is brilliant

    Thank you, stated a doubt disturbing, long wanted to know that. I think it was worth creating the topic is not even staff?

    959 should be a spectacular car!
    Just as Joost, I would like to hear how it is to have a 959, as it behave, characteristics ...
    And if possible some pictures.

    I sold my 959 2 years ago wish I hadn't, the car was in perfect condition, with 24000 km, 70% was driven in Europe
    Don't know if any one of you read the article on Road and track, about 7 years ago ,comparing the 959 to then last 993 turboS,
    those were both my car. I am attaching a pic done by a professional for a
    calender I have a whole book of fotos from my delivery ,even pics of the production line.I will try and scan them on my computer and publish them
    I tried to attach the pic even when reduce the size .
    question I'm on apple does that create a problem???

    DJC, can't help you with the apple question, but I think that shouldn't be a problem. Really looking forward to the pictures. Both the 959 and the 993 turbo S are awesome cars, still.
