    PCM updates in facelifted 997

There will be a major update to the PCM-unit in the facelifted model. I have spent some time this christmas with a friend who works for a company in Sweden working very closely with Porsche on this matter. This update will contain a full featured bluetooth interface for communicating with compatible devices, usb-interface so that you can control your ipod or any other mp3-player... it will also charge your unit through the usb-interface and it will be possible to control the unit directly from the buttons on the steeringwheel. Maybe not revolutionary, but still a very nice thing to have!

All this will be introduced in Geneva beginning of march. I know this since there are some major campaigns connected to this in the pipeline within this Swedish company and they will launch this together with Porsche in Geneva...

Juat wanted to share this info for what it is worth

    Happy new year guys!

Re: PCM updates in facelifted 997

Great news and frankly, it's about time too! For this kind of money, Porsche should have been offering this for some time.

Re: PCM updates in facelifted 997

I hope there is progress in the engine/transmission department too.

Re: PCM updates in facelifted 997

So does this mean the facelift will start in March next year then.

Re: PCM updates in facelifted 997

A little too late IMO. Its a bit enfuriating that you can find that in your regular Hyundai or Kia for years now...

Re: PCM updates in facelifted 997

Was there any discussion of a software or firmware update for pre-facelift PCM

Re: PCM updates in facelifted 997

    Touch screen also, I hope.

    How about both?

I'll have to look at our Toyota NAV a little closer, but dirty screens were definitely not an issue. Maybe because there is no glossy look to the screen. But the ability to navigate throught the menus was so much more efficient than in the Porsche.

So, I hope that Porsche outsources the GUI interface so that it can be more user friendly than what we have now.

Re: PCM updates in facelifted 997

Clean/dirty touch screen? It may not be an issue anymore.

I have this dig. camera with touch screen. When I got it I thought it would look like crap with fingerprints. Now I never think about it because no matter how much it's fingered the prints don't seem to show up. If you look at it just right you can see the greasy mess.

Re: PCM updates in facelifted 997

And here's hoping a facility for FULL postcode entry, just like my Honda Civic.

Like your ZIP codes we have a postcode. For example my previous employer's postcode was SO15 0HH. With PCM you can only enter SO15, and then have to scroll down a list of streets to find the one you want. With the Alpine based Honda system, you dial in SO15 0HH and voila, you get Western Avenue, Southampton Docks, which is were you want.

The Honda unit also has voice recognition, but if you instruct "Home" you normally get a response such as "Air Conditioner Off"

Re: PCM updates in facelifted 997

IMHO, how many of these extra "features" can really be used without driving your car into another car or off the road?

The more seriously I take my driving, the less I use those "additional features."

    Just my opinion.

In our Toyota PCM, once the car is in motion, certain features are disabled. For example, you can't enter street addresses into the NAV, nor can you manually enter telephone numbers to dial. Kind of inconvenient, but I understand that it's a good thing, because it's distracting enough just to change radio stations and keep you eye on the road at the same time.

Full postcode search is MUCH simpler. Without it you have to dial in Town, select which one if there is more than one with the same name, (Where I live there is a Hythe in Kent and our local Hythe in Hampshire) then dial in the full street name. We try and set it up before driving off, of course, but even so less twiddling the better.

Re: PCM updates in facelifted 997

I'd rather have fingerprints on a touchscreen instead of the ridiculous knob to enter things with. What a totally stupid interface.

Agreed. I just hope it's a good implementation.

Re: PCM updates in facelifted 997

I have touch screen on my wife's acura and passed on PCM on my cayenne because of the current user interface...Finger rints are not a problem..It's about time Porsche offered Ipod and Bluetooth integration.

    Happy New Year to all

ipod/mp3-player interface is Tequipment part no. 997 044 901 70 for current PCM2 or CDR24. The new PCM3 has that standard. However, the new CDR31 still has no ipod/mp3-player interface. At least that's what I have been told by Panasonic the new manufacturer of the CDR.

BTW, is Porsche's ipod/mp3-player interface actually available yet? It is only in the Tequipment brochure printed 05/2007 but is still not shown in the Tequipment section on Porsche's web site.

... hmm, ok, seems to be available. I just read the mp3 player poll thread

Re: PCM updates in facelifted 997

I think it is only available factory fitted. Retrofittable kits haven't made their way to the UK OPCs at least.

    5. Finally

Re: PCM updates in facelifted 997

How it works on a user friendly system with full post code entry (this is on my Honda Civic.

    1. Select Post code method for address :-

Re: PCM updates in facelifted 997

    2. Dial in post code

Re: PCM updates in facelifted 997

    3. And that's it. Correct road selected automatically
