    PDK car seen

    Hi,

just a few hours ago I saw a 997 tt with PDK. I have made a shot with my blackberry, but the mini-usb is in my office. So I will post the photo later.

It was on the parking of our golf club. I inspected the car carefully. It was black, but previous color was red. The car was overpainted with black color, but on many places the red color is shining out.

The interiour looks like tiptronic. The stick was covered.

Just as I wanted to go, the driver came. I've asked him, but he didn't answered in full sentences. I have asked about PDK and he asked me if I have one Turbo. I've told him, that I was waiting for PDK and bought manual instead. He said, for Turbo and PDK I have to wait still 2-3 years.

He said he tests some facelift components.

He started the engine and drove away. He used the covered stick as a Tiptronic stick. But when he was driving it was clear that this is a PDK version. The gear change was totally different then Tiptronic s and changing down was with small throttle impuls.

    Picture will follow later.

    Re: PDK car seen

So the transmission blips the throttle? Interesting. Too bad it will take another 3 years .

    Re: PDK car seen

porsche simply cannot afford to wait another 2-3 years with the intro of pdk...they will loose face compared to the other manufacturers of sports cars. they need to restore their image as one of the leading sports cars manufacturers.

i am sure we will see pdk very soon. i am also sure that they will keep automatic as an alternative to pdk and manual...however, wth more gears than the old 5 gear tiptronic.....which is ancient by today's standards....

I totally agree. If they wait another 2 or 3 years other manufacturers will come up with something newer that by then PDK will be a old news.

    Re: PDK car seen

My guess is that the guy was referring to the Turbo only. I think PDK on the NA motors is forthcoming next year.

    Re: PDK car seen

I've been waiting a long time too. If what the driver said is true (2-3 years for Turbo + PDK), then this is bad news. If it's not out by MY2009, I'll have to look at alternatives, such as the GTR

    Re: PDK car seen

Porsche has amazing engineers. They also now have financial resources -- look at the profits they are generating, so that should not be limiting their ability to develop and get to market the PDK. So what's the problem here?

I was at the grocery store last night with my Turbo. A guy in the parking lot was admiring the car and asked if it had paddle shifters. He told me about driving a Maserati lately and how awesome the paddle shifters were.

It shows that people expect a car of such a stature as a Porsche (and especially the flagship Turbo) to have state of the art mechanicals including paddle shifters.

Porsche is an amazing marketing company that has made engineering excellence the foundation of its place in the market. We Porsche owners appreciate Porsches for their engineering excellence. We accept they don't have some of creature comforts and electronic gizmos (iPod, Bluetooth, auto headlights, etc.) other cars have because we believe in the engineering essence of Porsche.

Porsche's engineering driven foundation is put at risk by their failure to deliver PDK in a market timely way.

    Re: PDK car seen

besides the fact that porsche has to come out with pdk to remain among the top sports car marques, it wil have a huge efect on performance.....look at what ferrari achieved with the scuderia.....a huge hype was created due to the 60ms shif times and the car has achieved cult status before even actual real life performance figures are released....

porsche currently seems to be run by corporate suits and not performance hungry technicians.....if share value is more important than performance numbers, then porsche will shift to a different market.

if the r&d department at PAG is not enthusiastic about the product they release, they cannot expect any enthusiasm amongst buyers.

i currently have a cayenne turbo, 997 turbo and will be receiving a gt2 coming march...so i guess i am a porsche guy...should the future not bring more exciting products i will look elsewhere...

I wish to drive a Porsche Turbo and not a PAG Turbo....

Yes you are right, as I have told him the same and he didn't negate this.

    Re: PDK car seen

Well put, intouch. With the Panamera coming as well as the takeover of VW, it will be interesting to see how Porsche evolves and especially what it means for its sports cars. Will a future Boxster, for example, be mostly VW content (ala 924)?

That's good news. That implies the F/L is not just cosmetic. By the way, did you get the feeling that the F/L will be released the same time as the PDK? This means that the F/L will not be available for 2-3 years. Ie., 2010/2011 model year.

Alan, I'm pretty sure that we'll be seeing the 998 model after 2 or 3 more model years. Facelift will need to come soon or it won't be necessary at all.

    Re: PDK car seen

Yes, I'm guessing 2010 will be the last model year for the 997 and maybe 2011 will be the last most model year for the 997TT.

    Ie.,

    2005-2010 997 (6 year model run)
    2007-2011 997TT (5 year model run)

    1999-2004 996 (6 year model run)
    2001-2005 996TT (5 year model run)

So, 2011 will be the new 998. 2013 will be the 998TT.

    Re: PDK car seen

So can we see the pictures that you took?

    Re: PDK car seen

    please photos

    Re: PDK car seen

the picture is totally unspectacular - just a covered stick. I will go tomorrow in my office and upload the picture.

BTW the facelift for 997 tt had nothing to do with the PDK for 997 tt.

    Re: PDK car seen

Did you take a picture focusing on the FLOPPY PADDLES so to speak?

    Re: PDK car seen

here is the picture - without any paddles!

this seems to me like a normal 911 you saw, how come there are no paddles ? I thought you said that you saw paddles behind the steering wheel

    Re: PDK car seen

No, never told that I have seen paddles. It was a test 997 tt testing some facelift components and pdk.

I'm glad I waited for this picture. NOT!

    Just kidding.

    Re: PDK car seen

From the picture, it looks like a normal turbo interior with that plastic sheet covering up....

    Re: PDK car seen

yeah you did mention a bit about the gear change? Did it sound very different from tiptronic? It is hard to fathom this car as the new PDK because it should have paddles like the Quattraporte or AUDI TT so it is a bit bizarre. Could it be something misplaced over the stick or was it purposeful as you said. It did look a bit strange. If anything, I think very soon in the next few months... we should be seeing more spy shots on test mules.

    Re: PDK car seen

I've talked to the guy (test driver) and somehow you can read between the lines.

The car was defintley with PDK, the paddles don't matter. You can use also the tiptronic buttons for changing.

    AM

    Re: PDK car seen

Isn't having the paddles part of the enjoyment of using the PDK? And now we won't have that?

    Re: PDK car seen

No, I mean for testing purpose you can use the tiptronic buttons. Maybe Porsche will try something different for changing the gears. Paddles are using all other.

    AM

    Re: PDK car seen

Porsche may continue to use tiptronic style buttons on the PDK. Who knows? Mercedes for example uses various types of activators on their automatics depending on the model.

    Re: PDK car seen

Porsche don't make Paddles for the new PDK/DSG like Ferrari, Maserati or BMW M5. The gear "Paddles" look like in this Panamera Spy Shot

I agree. Furthermore, the Panamera's selectors are probably controlled in the same way as the current tiptronic buttons, from a technological point of view. Very consistent with the given observations.

Damn. I was always envisioning the 997TT PDK with paddles. Oh well.
