BMW Unveils new Twin Turbo V8

    Code Named the N64

I can already smell an engine of the year award!

Re: BMW Unveils new Twin Turbo V8

    Specs?

Re: BMW Unveils new Twin Turbo V8

It's for the new X6 apparently:

    300kW @ 5500r/min (402HP)
    600Nm @ 1750r/min (442lb)

Re: BMW Unveils new Twin Turbo V8

    Thanks for the post .

Re: BMW Unveils new Twin Turbo V8

BMW keeps innovating! That's a lot of power for the 5 series. Mercedes is toast.

Re: BMW Unveils new Twin Turbo V8

Thanks. Imagine how quick a 550i will be with this?

It will debut in the X6, but it will be introduced across the board in the new 5 and 7-series, the upcoming 8-series, and probably the X5 as well.

This is basically a V8 version of the 335i engine, current engine of the year, so I'm not going to bet against this one taking home that award as well.

Re: BMW Unveils new Twin Turbo V8

Reckon someone is going to shoehorn it into a 3 series and tune it for 400kw?

Re: BMW Unveils new Twin Turbo V8

    my pleasure guys:-)

    Power figures are 407Hp / 600 Nm

Re: BMW Unveils new Twin Turbo V8

Many thanks for posting. BMW are definitely one of the top two mass produced car engine manufacturers - I'd rate only Honda as equal to them. Now if only they could get the styling as good as the engines....

Re: BMW Unveils new Twin Turbo V8

This engine will be a blast. And the best at this kind of engines is, with a tiny chip you will get 460 - 480hp very easy. With some other mods you can even have more than 500hp. whoooaaa!

Yes, I think you are being very conservative. I bet a mild chip will give 500hp

Re: BMW Unveils new Twin Turbo V8

Why did'nt they whack this one in the new M3??...May as well given it a twin turbo , would of been a driver's challenge...

Re: BMW Unveils new Twin Turbo V8

This is very ambitious but I hope Morgan can get their hands on this motor.

Re: BMW Unveils new Twin Turbo V8

    I allredy love this engine!
Just look at the EU average fuel consumption.

Although I wonder what transmission wil this engine use?
I know they probably have an autobox with some overhead for tunners and safety.

But what about the new 7speed DSG box it was rated for 600nm as recall and it will be to risky to put that one with this engine?

Maybe guru Kreso has some nice insight in this....

...as a consequence, now imagine, that PORSCHE AG has to throw at least 430hp V8 into 2010/11 CayenneS, and even more into Panamera V8 2010...

Re: BMW Unveils new Twin Turbo V8

    Twin-turbo-ed and still less than 100hp/L? Somehow I don't think that's too world-class.

But the design is unique for sure, BMW reversed the intake and exhaust sides, with the exhaust opening into the V and the intake moves to the conventional exhaust location.

This makes sense in the thermal department as heat is localized at the top where it's easily dissipated and it keeps the intake at a cooler location. However, this configuration also raises the cg of the engine, with the deep oil pickup this engine looks to be a lot taller than the NA version, how it's gonna affect the handling of the car is still to be seen.

The tall engine will also poses problems in fitments in the 5 and 7 series, with EU requiring bigger buffers between hood and engine this will raises the hood even more.

Re: BMW Unveils new Twin Turbo V8

Thanks for the heads up. I wonder how the BMW engines would turn out if Bangle was in charge of them...

    Whoopsy,

the purpose of this engine isn't raw top-end power, but monster torque, almost from idle, up to redline. It will also do this while conforming to stringent emission standards. I have no doubt that just by adding a chip and freeing up the exhaust, the engine will be topping 500 bhp.

    WXYZ-15 cylinder configuration?

Re: BMW Unveils new Twin Turbo V8

I'd like to see this in a mid-engine car...

Yes, with a dry-sump version of the motor to reduce height and lower center of gravity (and improve oiling at high g's on a track).

M1 revival perhaps? I have a strong feeling that they might make one in the next few years!

Re: BMW Unveils new Twin Turbo V8

Technically very interesting, sure, but also lumpy and made to fit only such strange cars as the X6. I can't see such a tall engine fitting in smaller cars.

Re: BMW Unveils new Twin Turbo V8

It is interesting how Mercedes-Benz dished out a supercar, albeit in the form of the SLR, as has Audi and its R8. Funny thing is that a decade ago no one would figure Audi would attempt a mid-engine V8 car but here we are. I do not imagine BMW sitting around while the other two are having fun. Here is too BMW dishing us the goods!

Re: BMW Unveils new Twin Turbo V8

Im pretty sure Wiessman will also be getting their hands on this pretty soon. They already use the S54 from the M3 for the GT, the S85 for the MF-5 and ofcourse they also use the 4.4i V8 which this engine will replace:

    Two reasons,

    (1) Weight penalty. It's not as light as the new M engine.

    (2) Homologation. A lot of spec racing series do not allow turbo engines, or it they do, they usually penalize them with air restrictors or weight.

Hell, the new TT 6 cyclinder after some mild tweaks is putting out almost as much power as the new M3 engine with 2 less cyclinders
