They aren't. The 328i lies somewhere inbetween the two, probably due to the proximity of the 335i. There used to be a 330i though, right until last year.

The 328 is a 3 Series with a 2.8 litre engine. It replaces the 325i, which had a 2.5 litre engine. BMW bumped the 330 up to a 3.5 litre turbo motor last year, so they bumped the 2.5 up to 2.8 to bridge the gap. In North America anyway. Unfortunately, we don't get any BMW diesel models over here, which really sucks. Apparently BMW doesn't think the North American market would be accepting of diesel engines.

You won't find a new 328i I'm afraid.
In the UK, when the E46 3 series was launched back in 1998, there was initially a 318i (which had a 1.9 litre 4 cylinder engine) and a 328i (which had a 2.8 litre inline 6 cylinder engine) followed by a 320i (which had a 2 litre 6 cylinder engine) and a 323i (which had a 2.5 litre 6 cylinder engine).
From about 2000, the 323i was replaced by the 325i and the 328i was replaced by the 330i. The 335i only came with the new 3 series model introduced recently.
If you want one new, the closest available today is the 330i.

They offer different engines, but there's not any new ones just for NA. The 328i is the same 3.0 litre engine as sits in the european 325i and 525i. And the 35i engine is also a 3.0 litre, just with two turbochargers. They decided not to use the 30i engine with 272hk in USA for the 3-series.

The 328 replaces the 325. The 325 and the 328 are the same 3.0 liter 6-cylinder engine only the 328 has a little better intake system to extract 15 extra hp (215hp for the 325 and 230hp for the 328).
Here in the US we only get the 328 and the 335 right now. We are getting the 335d later this year (yes, the 3.0 liter turbo diesel with 427 ft lbs of torque).
To get back to the question, I'd go on Vehix.com and search dealers inventories if you can't wait for a car that you order.
