Ariel Atom - Anyone here driven/own one?

I'm thinking of getting one for a track day car in Australia. I'm interested in anyones driving experience of the car..... especially on the track.

Re: Ariel Atom - Anyone here driven/own one?

How much is it John? I hear it is north of $100k. Why don't you wait and see what the KTM will set you back?

Re: Ariel Atom - Anyone here driven/own one?

    or the new Lotus 2-Eleven

    Fifth Gear Review

    Autocar's Review

Re: Ariel Atom - Anyone here driven/own one?

Yeah....$100k is about right....but still waiting for Aust. Design Rules to be complied before final pricing....plus there is a waiting list.

    If track only....can order now.

Is KTM going to be cheaper? Doesn't look as good IMHO. And also not quite as quick from the quick spec sheet i looked up.

I thought about a stripped out porsche....but way more $$$ and not as fast.

I'm amazed no one on Rennteam has driven one!

Re: Ariel Atom - Anyone here driven/own one?

One of my neighbours has one, and got to say it's fantastic. His has 'only' 160bhp, one of the Atom 1's, but it feel like nothing else, god knows what the 300bhp must be like.

Only thing I would say, helmet, even for road driving is a must - boy does grit, or even small flies, sting!

Re: Ariel Atom - Anyone here driven/own one?

    Thanks Gauss

The 2-Eleven in Aust is about $150k (with taxes etc.)
The KTM will be about $110k (with taxes)
The Ariel Atom will be about the same as the KTM (but is faster).

Lotus would be easy to service etc......hmmm will have to have a good think about it.

Re: Ariel Atom - Anyone here driven/own one?

    Thanks Rich.

The Atom 3 (ie post early 2007) with the 300bhp is the one I am thinking about. Does your neighbour get it serviced anywhere in particular?

I wonder if it would be easy to buy one now as a track only car, and retro fit the Australian Design Rules "stuff" later on?

Re: Ariel Atom - Anyone here driven/own one?

We're in the south of the UK so it's not too bad for him to get the guys at Ariel to look at it.

not too sure what the remote service options are - can't think it's too difficult given the open nature of the car, and the honda power - have you tried the Atom Owners Club.... >>LINK<<

Re: Ariel Atom - Anyone here driven/own one?

Hey John, why not a Formula Ford if you are gonna get something non road registable? I really want a track car too, but I will not get anything that isn't road registable. I hate the idea of towing to the track. I seriously would not mind the KTM, but then I keep thinking how cheap (and how cheap it is to run) one of those Japanese rice rockets. A used one will set you back only $40k! I will look into a track car in the new year too. How was the Aston at Philip Island btw?

Re: Ariel Atom - Anyone here driven/own one?

You might also consider a Radical SR3.

Re: Ariel Atom - Anyone here driven/own one?

ktm is about 700kg and ariel atom is only about 500 with honda k20a engine i will go for atom 3!

Re: Ariel Atom - Anyone here driven/own one?

We don't get the Radical here.

Re: Ariel Atom - Anyone here driven/own one?

I suggest you read lots of comparison tests before you purchase an Atom. I have read several times, that they are hard to control at high speeds and in corners...

Re: Ariel Atom - Anyone here driven/own one?

    lack of downforce!?

Re: Ariel Atom - Anyone here driven/own one?

If you want a serious track-only car that can also win races, follow this link: http://www.westracecars.com.au/. I have an earlier generation version of this car with somewhat lower power than the current 176hp at the rear wheel carrying 375kg. The car handles and communicates extremely well. Consider maintenance costs along with purchase costs; the running costs of lightweight cars are much lower because you don't burn through brake pads/calipers, tires, etc. And as for powertrain, it is simply a consumable for this car.

Re: Ariel Atom - Anyone here driven/own one?

You might want to read and follow this thread on Pistonheads :

2 Eleven or Caterham or Atom

    Thanks Guass

They really go on and on and on!
Not sure what to make of it. I am not a fan of the Caterham.....i really don't like thier look. I do like the 2-11, but I keep thinking....why not put a roof on it and buy the top of the line Exige.

Then if the Atom comes in at about $100k, It will be about $40k less than the 2-11 and Exige...

I think I will definitely try and test drive the 2-11 early next year.

Does anyone know if the X-bow is definitely coming to Australia?

    Thanks Schao

They look like very interesting race cars, but I only want a track day car (at this stage). If I had the money, I would buy a 997 Cup Car and race it in the Carerra Cup here in Australia. But I am still a few years away from doing that.
