    Engine and Brakes oil questions

    Hi all!
I am considering changing the engine oil from the Mobil 1 0W40 to the Castrol RS 10W60. Has someone here did it? Any major drawback/advantage noticed? Reason why I would like to do so is because I am using my GT3RS on track and I am not planning to go to the mountains this winter....
I am also thinking to put the Castrol SRF brake fluid...my dealer told me that, although it is a much better brake fluid, is sensitive to humidity (??)....so I should change it everytime it rains. Does it sound right to you??

    Thanks for your feedback.

Re: Engine and Brakes oil questions

10W60??? I don't believe that heavy an oil is on the approved list, why do tou want so heavy an oil, that could interfear with the operation of the vario cam+.
Whats wrong with the factory fill-Mobil1??

I've been using Castrol SRF since early '02, and my car (996TT) is a daily driver. There's definitely no need to change it everything it rains. And it makes a noticeable difference on the track. I can only recommend it.

Re: Engine and Brakes oil questions

I believe that one of the benefits of the SRF is that is has an unusually high wet boiling point, so that even when it has absorbed moisture (no more common than with other fluids) it still works better than regular fluid that is dry...

    eheheh!
    Toast family senior !
    I recognize you!

I use on my 996 the SRF since an year (Porsche dealer installed)......it works very good in all seasons !
Yesterday I used my car on Magione circuit with 37 C degrees ,a track very difficult for brakes ....I used the car from 9:00 to 17:00 ...with only a little lunch pause ....so ...
no problems ....... (thans also to pagid orange)

    p.s. Capra !

Nothing wrong with Mobil1 0-40 but....my idea was to use a more "track oriented" engine oil, more resistent to a racing use and higher temp. At very low temp, what I am "losing" by using a 10W, I don't care as I am not going to the mountains.
Anyway, still not convinced unless a major advantage will pop up. Today I spoke with a friend using Motul....He said that compared to Castrol, that is losing its qualities very soon (after 6k-7k km), Motul is still clear and clean also after 10k...

On the brake fluid, I am convinced.....I would go for it....sound better to me! So, thanks for your feedback.

    Ciao

Ciao Sergini....how was Magione?? Lucky you
Thanks for your feedback....I will go fro it
P.S. : the air filter is great...working really well!
P.S. : that picture remind me great days at the Nurburgring....what a week end! See you again there in September. Ciaooo

What your losing is metal on your moving metal internals that need the oil. Start up is the time when the most wear and tear occurs on the motor. You want an oil as thin as possible at startup so that it makes it to all the moving internals the fastest. The tolerances are very tight with this motor so you want the oil pumped through the motor very quick. You will do you motor a greater dis-service by uping the low end of the viscosity scale than the benefits you would hope to have by upping it at the high end of the scale...ie 60 weight. 40 weight oil is more than adequate for track work. Keep in mind that race motors are torn down and checked quite frequently and under those conditions a higher weight oil would be benefical since the cars are run at WOT for long periods during a race and the oil is changed every race. Just my 2 cents...

If Mobil 1 is good enough for maybe over 500 Carrera Cup and RSR racing cars running on race tracks all over the world, don't you think you might just be able to scrape by on it?

If you really want to use Castrol, Porsche approves six of that company's synthetic products with viscosities of 0W-40 and 5W-40, but not the 10W-60 type you mentioned.

As Grant wrote above, SRF has a higher boiling point than conventional brake fluids.

However, Castrol SRF brake fluid does not "bind" absorbed water the same way that standard DOT3 fluids do, so the water in SRF can evaporate at high temps. Not a good thing!

For this reason, SRF should be changed more frequently than the intervals for "normal" brake fluid, which I believe are currently 40,000 km. But not after every shower of rain!

Re: Engine and Brakes oil questions

You could mix some Mobil1 15w50 with the 0w40 if the climate is hot. Castrol 5w50 is also an approved oil. I've read that the F1 and NASCAR cars use 0w20 and 0w30 weight oils. It seems that my old beliefs about heavy oil being superior are not true.

Re: Engine and Brakes oil questions

The 0W-20 oils are used in some racing engines because the low viscosity cuts internal oil drag. A dyno test done with Sylkolene 0W-20 on a 1100cc racing engine shows max HP of 127.9 with 15W-50 oil and 134.4 with the 0W-20.

Re: Engine and Brakes oil questions

Everything it is now clear...thanks guys!
I would stay with a 0-40 and probably with Mobil 1 too.
But I will go for the SRF as brake fluid.
BTW, the lost in power was confirmed by a Castrol engineer who told to expect around 2% (that on my car is around 8HP ) by going from 0W to 10W...so, around 5% by going to 15W sounds high but possible.

    Thanks again.

On the other hand, racing engines have a shorter life between overhauls then road car engines run between oil changes. A Formula 1 engine might run less than 300 miles or 500 km (qualifying plus race distance), unless it is Sato's Honda engine, or anybody's Mercedes Benz engine, in which case it doesn't even get that far.
