Anyone check/inflate their tyres at home?

I am wondering if there is a better alternative to driving a few miles (thus not having cold tyres) to the nearest filling station to check/inflate my tyres to the correct pressures.

Anyone have a home kit they could recommend?!

    Thinking about one of these:

Re: Anyone check/inflate their tyres at home?

Got this one, seems to work ok:

Re: Anyone check/inflate their tyres at home?

I'd recommend something at least as big as this. They come bigger; bigger tanks are better (five or ten gallon necessary for some tools). Reason: because the numerous air tools come in very handy. The first attachment after tire valve unit? A nozzle for blowing off brake dust before washing car (avoids muddy wheels). Then it's on to impact wrenches, ratchets, jack hammers (small), grinders, descalers. Hundreds of uses just with the air nozzle.

Re: Anyone check/inflate their tyres at home?

I've got this one. As MMD notes, these have many more uses than just tire inflation. I've got a flexible 25' hose on one side and a 50' hose on a reel on the other side. I use it with my air ratchets and other air tools.

    Nice unit

LOL. I got a mini jack hammer with other tools with my ten gallon unit. Never thought I'd need a JH!! Then the night before the electricians were coming I realized there was no hole in the concrete foundation for their conduit. I jackhammered a three inch hole in about an hour. Dirty, noise-y job but somebody had to do it.

Re: Anyone check/inflate their tyres at home?

Hope you didn't head out to buff the car after using the JH. Can imagine you'd be putting a lot of pressure on the buffer after using the JH!

Re: Anyone check/inflate their tyres at home?

Guys, if all you need to do is top up a tire that's a few PSI low, there is no need for a compressor etc. All you need is a regular old bicycle pump, as long as it has the type of head that attaches to Schrader valve (bikes use ether Schrader or Presta valves). Easy to use, portable, always works, etc. And cheap! The one below is $20 from a local outdoor store. How can you lose?

Re: Anyone check/inflate their tyres at home?

What I like best is the Campbell Hausfeld cordless inflator, to air up tires. It's what I used to use, for spare air at the track. Costs approx. $40 at Walmart--I almost never use my air compressor anymore for airing up tires--the cordless inflator is just too easy (just plug it in overnight once a month or so to keep its charge up).

Not alot of effort required for JH thru concrete if you let the tool do the work. I _did_ feel it the next day though. LOL. JH used with simple pointed bit on a car's finish _might_ result in stunning custom dimpled effects; would show highlights better than the standard factory-applied slight orange peel.

    Neighbor sees you using it?

Re: Anyone check/inflate their tyres at home?

The temp of the tires doesn't be a prob with 997TT anymore. But never user the absolute values in the main menue for reducing or adding air.

Always use the RDK sub menue with the +/- value. This corrects the change of the pressure through temps. The correct pressure is hardcoded to your system and you have to change them by your OPC when you are using other wheels/tires with different reference pressure.

Re: Anyone check/inflate their tyres at home?

The 19 inch Michelin PS2's on my 911 are so pricey I really pay attention to tire pressure in order get every last mile out of them. I use an ordinary bicycle pump and a "geniune Porche" pressure gauge. I use the pressures shown on the label pasted to the door jamb.

Re: Anyone check/inflate their tyres at home?

    I recommend this gauge highly, I've used Griot's, Porsche, etc, nothing comes close to this one;

Re: Anyone check/inflate their tyres at home?

    +1. They are the best.

Re: Anyone check/inflate their tyres at home?

A digital tyre pressure gauge is a MUST for any car owner!

Re: Anyone check/inflate their tyres at home?

buy one with a tank. Much faster. also a digital guage is a must.

Re: Anyone check/inflate their tyres at home?

I've got the manual pump, to keep my kids in line, and the lighter socket Black & Decker unit. I check all vehicles once/month for pressure on cold tires at home.

Saves a bundle in replacement tires, and keeps our minds clear with our kids driving safety.

Just do it. I have gauges in every vehicle.

If you don't want to invest in a compressor, buy a good tyre gauge, over inflate your tyres by a few pounds on the way home. (I'm assuming you don't live far from a filling station.) Next morning bleed off some air to the correct pressure.

Re: Anyone check/inflate their tyres at home?

I like this one, very "german" and super accurate, even comes with a calibration certificate. Made in Schwabenland like my Porsche!

Have both their small unit and a bigger one for the garage.

Re: Anyone check/inflate their tyres at home?

While I don't have a fancy air pump with a tank, I recently purchased a pump with a direct plug-in to an electric outlet that pumps up really fast. I use a digital gauge, which measures in 0.1 lb. increments (I'm an American, and we still use the English system of measurement). As I live a long distance from my dealer (the OPC), I check my own tires frequently using my own pressure gauges and filling them with my own pumps (either run off the car's battery or from a direct line the electric power outlet in my garage).

Keep the tires inflated properly, and it will handle better. I like to keep the rear ones a bit softer as I can get through turns a lot better, but I sacrifice wear on the rears (I had to replace my rear tires recently - I have Continentals, not the greatest in the dry but better in the wet). Whatever method you use, check the tires yourself - don't wait to go to your OPC. You'll get more wear out of your tires if you check them yourself frequently!!

This is what I do, works well, and I know the tires will be cold.

Re: Anyone check/inflate their tyres at home?

I always inflate tyres when they are cold and my car park in my garage. My mini air compressor is so loud that I feel bad for my neighbor. I don't see any reason 997 owners should go to a filling station to fill air to the tyres since all 997s come with a tyre compressor.
