You are Porsche New CEO - What would you do?

Assume that you have just become Porsche's new CEO (yes, with the sizable salary). What are your model and racing program plans?

I'll start the ball rolling: (In very general terms)

    Models:
    1. Determine that all new models must reduce weight by 7% in relation to their previous versions.
    2. Develop a modern, compact and light (650PS) V8 to be centrally mounted on a Carrera GT substitute
    3. Determine that the 911 model range should span between 400PS to 550PS
    4. Determine that the Boxter/Cayman model range must aim to have between 300 PS and 350PS
    5. Introduce new much smaller (and prettier) Cayenne (but keep power)
    6. Panamera - what to say?
    7. Introduce 928 substitute (with Panamera's to of the range power plant)

    Racing Program:

    1. If ACO rules for LMP1 become less biased towards the Diesels, then build a LMP1
    2. If ACO rule continue as they are (and seem to be going), phase out LMP2 program.
    3. Develop GT1 from homologated Carrera GT substitute.
    4. Continue to develop 911RSR for GT2 program
    5. Continue with Porsche Cup and Supercup.

Re: You are Porsche New CEO - What would you do?

Get myself a bigger salary than 70 million euro a year... let's say somwere close to 100?
and after just one year I fire myself, of course after I get all the money and be sure that Porsche pays the taxes for my salary..... so I can buy whatever model Porsche decides to make after, and I don't have to be bored with time plannings, marketing staf... so on....

Re: You are Porsche New CEO - What would you do?

You make great suggestions. It is rumored that Porsche is considering a midengine high powered model priced in the Ferrari430 and Lambo range. Certainly it would draw my interest.

Though I differ with Porsche on a number of issues, I do agree with their approach in racing. Other than certainly technological advances, racing doesn't do a damn thing for sales. Since Porche dropped out of racing, they have broken all their sales records.

Of course, given the perf of the company to date, why should they change anything? Porschephiles will buy what they build.

They've certainly got the right formula.

I agree with those. I always thought the CGT should have been a new model line, not a one off supercar. Couldn't they have turned a profit by spreading the costs over many years of production (10-15).

Guys like Nick would have a tough time bashing Porsche if the CGT were sitting in the showrooms and available for a sticker price of a Vanquish or 599.

But they do sell because they are heavily harvesting their racing heritage -- without seeding anything noteworthy new. People who buy a Cayenne now had a 917 with Gulf paint or a Martini Racing 911 as a poster in their bedroom as a kid, probably.

Is that any different than Ferrari? Ferrari can market a re-badged Lada and Ferrari-phile will still snapped them up above market value and create a 2 year wait list, all the while saying it's a good investment.

Good point. But it has been over 10 years since they were officially affiliated with racing and still breaking sales records.

Racing was important for technological advances in car in the past. But today with the state of the art computer simulation, they can develop advanced products w/o leaving the drawing board.

Whoopsy, much of Ferrari's lure is it is expensive, very limited in quantities and having a lot of money will not guarantee you can get one.

Porsche builds enough cars so that whoever wants ones can get one. Simple but very successful formula.

I think Plan 1. would have to be to learn to sell Boxster.

Not true at all. You can walk into any Ferrari dealership and buy a "new" 100 or 200 mile on the odometer F430. And it doesn't matter who you are, provided you pay the market price.

Re: You are Porsche New CEO - What would you do?

    1) bring back a 928
    2) win le Mans ! :-)

Re: You are Porsche New CEO - What would you do?

Sell 997 engines in the 987, at 997 prices.

Regarding Le Mans, it's not going to happen as long as Peugeot plans to use Le Mans victories to promote its Diesel engines...

Re: You are Porsche New CEO - What would you do?

    road cars

    -weight loss program
    -mild power gain
-introduce technologies from Carrera GT to other models

Re: You are Porsche New CEO - What would you do?

I will continue doing what the current management is doing,

    1. barely listening to customer input
    2. making pointless special editions
    3. take hallowed names like GT3/2 and soften them, while coming up with new models to fill the old shoes and charging even more.

((All the while turning large profit))

At the end, I will collect my 9 figure bonus and start collecting Ferraris and Aston Martins.

    Sorry! You're right Fritz.
I suppose one should have some sort of an education before "pulling" that kind of a salary.

Re: You are Porsche New CEO - What would you do?

I'll give Nick a free Cayenne Turbo and ask him to lay off my back.

That someone else spec.'d. & for above sticker............ He probably meant one to your specs. at msrp & he's right doesn't matter how much money you have dealerships (in my area at least) will not sell you a new/your spec. car at msrp,,,,,,,unless.

Exactly right and I am sure Alan understood what I meant. I for one will not pay over MSRP even though I can afford it.

Hisham, I owe a Cayenne and I am not sure I would accept another after my experience with mine. Besides, if Windeking gave it to me I would have to have a complete inspection before driving it.

Why doesn't Porsche compete in the Ferrari/Lambo/AM market? I know that the TT is their answer but can you imagine if they came out with a mid engine 550hp (have to keep it under 612hp ) car like the CGT with perf. parameters close to the GT2 priced around $200,000 how well that will sell?

I would be first in line. Sadly, I suppose if they did that it would siphon off sales from their TT and TT cab models. Yet, I think the profit margin would be greater with the CGT like car.

Re: You are Porsche New CEO - What would you do?

I'd be a hands-off guy and secretly hire someone from Rennteam to do my job.

Then I'd set up a 24/7 800 number for P-car owners that goes directly to a panel of Porsche technical/engineering experts.

Re: You are Porsche New CEO - What would you do?

If were PAG CEO, man I would here once in a while just to remind me how people can wine and bitch about the most futile things.. instead of just enjoying their cars...

OOOPS! I'd never make CEO of any company cos I don't know that "spell" is spelt with a P!

Spyderidol, you seem to have recognized what I had really meant to write!

Man, you must be psychic. That's even better than being able to spell correctly.

NIck's been waiting 3 years for someone to finally come up with that idea.

Re: You are Porsche New CEO - What would you do?

    1) Knowing that there is only so much more power and size that can come out of the flat-6 look at lighter weight in all things.

    2) Have a lower cost Boxter/Cayman using the VW VR6 engine making 240ish bhp with a lower level of trim and $10,000-15,000 less money.

    3) make the last 997 a special treat for enthusiasts. A 997 GT3 is simply called the Carerra RS. Have it weigh less than 2,750 lbs. Have a plastic gas-tank like the original RS, thin carpets, roll up windows, no AC or radio, no glovebox door, thin glass all round, no sunroof, no undercoating, little sound-deadening, light weight white paint only. DFI with 440 hp, Ti exhaust like the GT2, ceramic brakes, center lock magnesium BBS wheels, Ti hubs like the 935.

    4) Make the 998 a smaller car lighter car like pre '89 cars. Try to keep weight at 3,000 lbs.

    5) Homogenize a mid engine 998 with no rear seats and a 5 litre V8 from the Panamera and use that for racing. Have it as the exclusive model in the line-up and have people slowly gravitate to that engine over the flat-6 due to racing success.

Sounds good, but you'd also have to homologate it first, though.

    Oh, I'm sorry. I just couldn't resist.

Good one . Hegemony would be a good thing for all car enthusiasts .

Man, I'm not as choosy as you are. I'll take any kind of money.

Re: You are Porsche New CEO - What would you do?

A mid-engine 911 would not be a 911. Plus the (admittedly vestigial) rear seats are a major selling point (at least to me ).

What we need is a Boxster/Cayman with the same engines as the 911, sold at the same price.

Re: You are Porsche New CEO - What would you do?

    1) Dump every 911 except the GT3, GT3RS, GT2 and TT

    2) Make a 400+ BHP Cayman and Boxster + RS editions of both.
Let people choose between the classic 911 and a 987 with the power to match its handling.
If the 911 loses this battle its probably because its very construction has met its limitation. At any rate it's better to make REAL sportscars instead of holding back for marketing reasons.
People who likee the classic Porsche will still pick the 911. People who prefer the 987 will still pick a Porsche.

    3) Make a subbrand to cover the Panamera and Cayenne, leaving the Porsche brand purely sportscar focussed.
This move could be good for sportscar sales/brandvalue, but potentially really bad for Panamera/Cayenne sales.

    4) Launch 928-replacement, +600 BHP GT for the 599/612 segment

    5) Retake supercar throne.
Develop prestige CGT-followup project. 900+ BHP ME supercar, beating Veyron as promo gimmick.

    6) Be on the forefront of alternate fuels/energy sources and develop a green car with the potential of becoming a real alternative to conventionally fuels cars.

    7) Have some R&R with some T&A

Re: You are Porsche New CEO - What would you do?

Porsche no longer needs to grow or even keep the same output levels!!!! Its growth has served the real purpose of Herr Peich, wich was for the Porsche clan to get control of the VW empire. Mission accomplished!

With that strategy now complete, Porsche can now resume making Porsches!

For starters, terminate any plans for whale coupes like a new 928. And shuffle off the new Cayenne and Panamera to
    the VW Audi universe.

Eliminate the 987 and 997 platforms. Introduce new models and make less of them. Porsche no longer has to
build softer cars to appeal to a more general audience. Those days can be over and should be!

New platforms please! 1 mid engine and 1 rear engined both light, nimble quick and fast. Prove they can build a modern car that does not need 300kg's worth of power accessories or wheels the size of whats on a Soviet howitzer!
