Re: 992 (Next 911 generation 2018/2019) Thread Chiuso

Those "farts"...I deplore them. Hate them. Stupid. Plain stupid. I love a good sound but not those farts, crackles, whatever you want to call them. My 991.1 Turbo S had farts which sounded as if someone was hiding beneath the car and hitting the undercarriage, worst "farts" experience ever. They improved this slightly with the 991.2 Turbo S but still... My 991.2 GTS Cab has these farts, they sound "bearable" but I could live without them. My R8? Well, if I downshift from let's say over 4000 rpm, they sound extremely loud and clear, very natural (seriously) but they are still annoying as hell in my opinion because it is just...too much. One reason I love driving in Performance mode DRY, no farts. Only in Dynamic mode.

I think you are right, a good sound is a good sound but making the car just loud and adding those dumb ass crackles makes things much worse.

My son, his friends and other kids/adolescents love these "farts" though... Smiley I guess car manufacturers should start to understand that they sell their cars to people like us, not necessarily to underage teenagers who worship Shmee, Vehicle Virgins and Co. Smiley Smiley

Re: 992 (Next 911 generation 2018/2019) Thread Chiuso

First, kill the natural sound due to regulations and potential target groups, afterwards program some misfires to generate bangs and crackles, for the sake of the car's character that has been abandoned in the first place.

For me the thing that counts is the sound, may it be silent or may it be noisy, as long as it is genuine. If it bangs at a downshift that's ok, but it better be different everytime it occurs. I'd consider myself as "generation playstation" and it seems, that I'm almost alone amongst the under 30s regarding this point. But hey, people around my age don't understand lateral dynamics and consider a car sporty if it has a low 0-100 time, so yes

Re: 992 (Next 911 generation 2018/2019) Thread Chiuso

Those misfires can not be good for the motor. These are explosions gone wrong. It’s like scratching a record to make a noise. My silent boring old Turbo is just fine with me. If I don’t wash it no one even sees the car. I like not being noticed at all while I rush around town.

Re: 992 (Next 911 generation 2018/2019) Thread Chiuso

I'm now back to a 997.2 GTS Cab and very happy with it, except that it is very quiet, even with the PSE the sound is not great. My 997.1 was a lot louder. I'm now trying to sell my 991.1 GTS Cab, with all of the sound artifacts. I wasn't driving it at all, just going out to prevent flat spots. The issue for me is that the car is too perfect and to have fun you have too be driving at 50-60 miles per hour, on back roads that are limited to 35-40miles.

Just sell the Porsche and buy something fun. I would take my gorgeous custom specked 08 Vantage Roadster with Larini exhaust out any day vs any 911 made today. After 10 years of ownership it still feels special. The Porsches are long gone. Same for the 09 California. There is not a single recent Porsche that could replace it. The only one would be a Singer Targa.

The older Aston Martins sound amazing, newer cars not that much (surprisingly). Larini exhaust? Not sure that Vantage roadster needs one but it surely sounds fantastic.

You'd be surprised, my current 991.2 Carrera GTS Cab sounds actually pretty good, I also like how the newer GT3 sound (unfortunately you need to rev above 4000 rpm to be able to enjoy a proper sound).

Yes, you are right, Porsche cars have kind of lost their sound lately but this is valid for many many other cars as well. I mentioned the current Audi RS3 where Audi muted the exhaust sound because over 2000 or 3000 customers made complaints about the too loud sound. Smiley Smiley I drove a RS3 before that software update and it sounded absolutely fantastic, almost like a R8 but a bit more muted. Not even sure those "farts" were the problem, I really think that ordinary people don't want loud cars. Smiley

RC, we can expect that the interior shape/graphism of the headlight to look a lot lhis, right?

By the way, did you had the chance to hear the 992 engine sound?

I heard the sound only at idle, sounded a bit like my GTS when they fired up the engine, so not quiet but since it was a test mule, it doesn't really matter. The sound can change...a lot.

Similar to past models, Porsche will have a test mule driving event for car journalists (major publications only though) this spring/summer, so be prepared to see and hear more about the 992.

I saw the car mainly from the rear and the side but yes, I think the front lights will have a similar daylight running light (four dots for sure).

Regarding the headlights. It’s funny how the lights on the 911 are still (round) oval shaped, even on the 992, while all the other models share the same triangle design.

All they needed to do was to flatting the goldfish eye bubble on the headlights and all will be fine.

The car body itself is getting bigger and bigger, going smaller with the headlights will make the proportions wrong.

Actually, the photo of the 991 above is distorted, check the mirrors for example.

If you compare the 992 with this photo, you'll see, that both are the same width, at least the front.
