Oops! You're right..push the gear lever, not the gear box. Heheh... I guess this is one of those doozy mistakes. 
Ironic that you say that you own a Supra. I used to have one too. Mark IV I believe or did I get that one wrong too.
It's been almost 8 years since I last drove one but if I remember correctly, you had to lift a lever under the shift knob to get it to shift into reverse, no? Maybe that's for VW cars,

Not uncommon for any car not to go into any particular gear in the showroom or garage when the engine is not running. Not a good idea to try and force it as you could bend something in the mechanism.

That's right! it's the Mark 4 (www.mkiv.com) and the lever part is only available on a 6-Spd TT
I'll give it a try next time I go back to the showroom.
