Any problems with the 911 starting up?

I'm coming off a bad experience with a Mazda RX-8 (the wankel), which floods when the car is turned off before the engine warms up. Does the 911 have the same problem? Any reliability problems?

"the 997 is as reliable as a wood-burning stove" James May

Re: Any problems with the 911 starting up?

Why would the P-car have the same problem as a rotary Mazda? I guess I don't understand the relationship?

Re: Any problems with the 911 starting up?

My bro had problems with his Rx8 so I can understand where StickyShift is coming from - he basically wants to know if the 997 is more reliable than the Rx8 I guess...

I want to know too - because my Golf failed to start this wkend and I nearly froze to death waiting for the breakdown company.

So - anyone had any starting problems with 997s?

Re: Any problems with the 911 starting up?

None - starts right up even in the cold temps in Denver winter and the heat of Denver summers.

Re: Any problems with the 911 starting up?

    Errrr. It's reliable.

Sometimes takes a few more turns to get going when warm. But no starting issues whatsoever.

Remember its Beetle heritage? The same applies here.

As said by others, how do you compare an RX-8 with a Porsche?

That said, on two occasions over nearly the last two years (I took delivery of a new 911S in February of 2006), I have had a bit of trouble starting the car, with the engine running rough for a few minutes. On each occasion, I had just washed the car a few days before and had not run it after the wash.

I would suggest that you run the car, both to get rid of any excess moisture that may cause problems in the electrical/electronic system and to purge the disc brakes/rotors of any excess moisture, which can show up as rust on the rotors after washing if not removed.

Otherwise, the car starts like a charm.

JUST DON'T PRESS ON THE GAS PEDDLE, AS THAT WOULD FLOOD THE ENGINE!!!!!!!!!

Re: Any problems with the 911 starting up?

Actually, I had to get used to not starting the 911 like EVERY other car I had previously started. Ever since I was a boy, I have started a car by: pressing the gas then turning the key, or depress the gas slightly while turning the key, or a combination of both.

My Porsche salesman told me that I was not to do that when starting the 911. Just push in the clutch and turn the key. Car starts perfectly every time.

Fuel injection in cars has been around for a long time...the procedure to start FI cars is usually the same - as you described for your P-car. What have you been driving that required you to press the gas pedal?

Re: Any problems with the 911 starting up?

Happened twice. On the first time, I turned the key, but let off of the key mistakenly before it started. When I tried to start it again, it just cranked for about 15 seconds, then one of the service lights came on. I tried it again, then I gave up. An hour later I tried again and then it started. On the second incident, I was so pissed when the service light came on, that I kept cranking the bitch for 2 minutes until it started. Both times were my fault, but starting the Porsche was never "turn, and fire", but more like "turn, crank, and fire"

Re: Any problems with the 911 starting up?

Your Porsche and your Mazda are extremely unlikely to have the same problems. It is always possible that your car may have some slight problems during your ownership but, in comparative terms, Porsches tend to be far more reliable than other cars so you can most probably buy it with plenty of confidence. Hope it lives up to your hopes and expectations Mine certainly did

Yes, no need for gas pedal involvement.

BUT, you'd think the "drive by wire" throttle, or E-gas (?) would be smart enough to disregard people making that "mistake."
