3.6 litre naturally aspirated flat 6 cylinder Mezger-derived engine with 450hp and rev limit at 9500rpm. It is gonna be a screamer!
Porsche cannot call it 718 if they give it anything else than a 4-cylinder engine. Their entire marketing department would go up in flames. They won't give it another model name either. Hence a 4-cylinder it is.

We want that screamer!
I really say - this front end and front lights are looking IMO better than the 991. Very modern, agile, sexy. The mid-engine of the Boxster/Caymen setup was always amazing. With the right engine this indeed would be a screamer.
And yes - they will not do us the favor. They didn't do it for the last 20 years (since the Boxster appeared) and they will not do it in the future.
Saw the 718 Spyder yesterday, barely camouflaged, LB license plates. Wanted to go after him in the E63 test-car I had but lost him at a stop light. My son was pretty angry because of that...
So...it is coming.

Don't tell me about it...
He was so happy that I chose the E63 instead of the GLC 63 and just yesterday, after the E63 test-drive, he was bitching about the Gran Turismo Sport game and how bad it has become (limited cars, very limited tuning options, etc.).
Also, he always gets angry when I choose a rental car without him, he wants to decide too.
This will cost me later on I'm afraid, he is already "bargaining" and arguing with me what kind of car he will get after he gets his driver's license at age 17.

Change to buying cars of leasing and keep them. He will later be very happy owning a good collection. Also - it makes it later on easier still having "petrol" based car which are making noise and which you still drive yourself. Otherwise poor boy will end up with a self driving Tesla. It is time now to start collecting the right toys
Lars, I would gladly buy cars and "collect" them but I am probably not as wealthy as you think I am.
I can imagine buying the R8 once the lease ends or getting the facelift and buy the car after the lease.
Unfortunately, this is the only money I can (and will) spend on a car, I am 53, business is slow (too small, getting more and more difficult, would love to do something else but no occasion has popped up yet), I do well with stocks and stuff like that but I also have two kids and need to think about my retirement, so...unfortunately...no car collection for me, not even a watch collection.

My pure speculation is that Porsche will introduce two cars: one which will be called Porsche Spyder (without the 718 nomenclature) and a second one which will be the 718 RS (in fact in 1961 Porsche built a 718 RS with a 8 cylinder engine as such the 718 moniker was not exclusive to 4 cylinder cars). Both cars would be equipped with a 4.0 litres GT engine, more detuned for the Spyder and less for the RS. Let`s say 420 hp for the Spyder and 450 for the RS. If it happens I am buying one! the 981 Spyder is one of the best Porsches I have ever owned .

Did you hear the engine of the Spyder?
4 cylinder turbo or 6 cylinder (n/a) ?

I heard from my usually good informed source, that there is no new Spyder for 2018 - that means no Modellyear 2019 in August 2018.
Earliest presentation in March 2019 and first car delivery after that.
Also no GT4 in 2018 !!!
After Geneva we will know more...and what cleaning lady was wrong...;-)

Not that history is any guarantee of Porsche strategy but the 981 Spyder was spotted in fairly similar undisguised form to this 718 in February 2015 in South Africa and then officially launched the following month at the New York auto show. Here are the 981 spy photo's for comparison.

steelested:wouldn't that be costly and a pain to take the 4l motorsport (only 4l that I am aware of ) and dumb it down (save for a detune)
They will save lots of money with change from Titanium conrods for steel and things like that...
Maybe ditch hollow crankshaft and dry sump oiling too. Revert to hydraulic valve lifters? Lower redline, add exhaust particle filter...
I also heard rumors that 4.0 is already chosen...

NelsonF:All of these photo sightings but no one can report on the sound of the motor? Why not? It seems a bit suspicious...
RC sees the car in the flesh some days ago, but he did not say anything about the sound.
Maybe he have some clues.
