Well they did tried to kill it back when they introduce the GL class.
The new G is suppose to be wider and longer. But from the pictures it is difficult to tell. I am guessing the designers scaled the extra dimensions into every panel and the overall proportions stayed exactly the same.
Interesting to see how the original model was reviewed on it's RHD debut in the UK back in 1981. It shows how the priorities of this market segment have completely changed in the intervening near four decades. A utlitarian workhorse has now become a blinged up tonka toy
993Targa:It really needs the side exhausts..
Maybe the G63 gets them but it is my understanding that side exhausts are not permitted anymore according to current EU laws (I may be wrong though, just read it somewhere...I think).

AP911:After watching some videos of the new G, it does look a bit softer with more curved edges, the interior doesn’t excite me, and did anyone else notice the Mini Cooper running daytime running lights?
Yes, the design is a bit different but not much.
My sales guy insists that the new G class drives now like a GL, which would be a huge handling improvement.
To be honest: I would prefer the "old" G63 if I could get one at a lower price (which will probably happen once the first G63 leases return and people switch to the new one).

Hopefully the EV "stay tuned" comment holds true and we see an EV G-class in the next few years.
For a true off-road vehicle, EV makes little sense since such a vehicle should be able to run on delivered fuel in the middle of nowhere. However, being anywhere near civilization, this thing would thrive on an EV -- huge torque, lower center of gravity, less need for mechanical bits for differentials, 10x better fuel economy.
Lars997:noone1:New G Class isn't getting the new MBUX system. Lame.
yeah - very lame. Apparently the new A-Class is the first getting it. Finally they also made a touchscreen out of the gigantic cockpit display.
I mean, it makes sense to put it in high-volume cars first since Mercedes doesn't survive on selling a few thousands $150K cars each year, but if they don't put it in the first-year G-class, it's hard to imagine they include it in the 2nd year and all the buyers of the first year get shafted. Pretty unfortunately timing.
It may be disappointing that the new G class doesn't get MBUX but maybe this model line isn't exactly the target model for such a system. Could also be related to the off-road capabilities of the G class?
The C class facelift doesn't get MBUX either, only an improved COMAND version and a digital cockpit (see photo).

Why isn't the G-Class the target audience for MBUX? 99% of these cars exists to solely drive around major cities and wealthy area codes.
Hard to argue it's the theoretical off-road nature of the G-Class excludes such an audience, yet it comes with all the other driving aids, luxury leather/trim interior, and probably even massage seats.

Lars997:C-Class facelift. Biggest disspointment that they leave this tablet screen on top. On the other hand as I own the pre-facelift I'm happy that it is not too much changed.
that looks better to me than current cheap massive screens...
