    SL Prototype Pic

    Saturday we picked up a used Lotus Elise near Stuttgart.

    On our way home on the autobahn we met an test driver of Mercedes with the new SL.

    Personally, the ONLY car model in the world that has consistently produced one elegant shape after another since its inception is the Mercedes SL Class. I have no doubt that the new one will be of the same.

    Exactly. Everybody knows it'll be a good looking car without any shocking design elements, and I guess that's the reason why there's not too much fuss about it.

    Though I would've thought several other MB models (S & E at least) would merit the conclusion "consistently produced one elegant shape after another since its inception" as well

    I know of a car model that consistently produces one elegant shape after another since its inception... because it's always the same shape!

    Hint: it's not Morgan. The Aero8 is fugly.

    I just hope the upcoming facelifted SL is not going to looks like how some magazines pictured it, because it'd be a sad departure from the series.

    It's a 2001 Race Tech with a Rover Engine - same car as my blue Elise.

    My sources tell me that this is the new top of the line SL, judging by the number of headlights it will be incredibly quick

    And in a retro-move they have decided to make the interior look exactly like the previous generation SL.

    Looking the rear of this car it seems like this SL has major hemorrhoid problems.

    The license plate fits it to a T. 'BS' is just what I thought about when I saw the car .

    Yes, it will have CLS type headlights. We already discussed that here earlier.

    It's a shame. The headlights is the only part of the CLS that the design team got wrong. I have a very bad feeling about that facelift.

    Absolutely agree.

    I can't really see something like a coherent design philosophy at Mercedes Benz lately. The new C-class looks like a shrunk S-class, M, GL are all look-alike, yet the SL-facelift gets headlights of the only model, that looks totally different.

    Also despise the CLS-style headlights...

    But also hate convertibles/sunroofs....

    IMO, CL63 w/030 wheels is best-looking car today....but exterior styling is far less important for me than dynamics/safety/interior ergonomics....

    Told my dealer I want SLxx Blk anyway....as long as car has CA-compatible ground clearance...and a new-tech CL-like interior/seats, etc....it should be an interesting dynamic comparo vs CL63/599/Scud.....

    First 4 SL Blk slots (no one seems to want a non-weapons-grade SL non-Blk ) at my dealer are already allotted to guys who are already enjoying their second copies of both 599/CL63 (fair no. of new, latest-tech car nuts in SF/SiliconValley who get rid of cars every 6mos )....and are also getting early Scuds....interesting competitive milieu for SL Blk...

    Just for your info CL63 Hockenheim time is 1.18,4min with 030... So, do you know what that means?
