    Turbo wheels

As my production date looms I can't help checking the Germany website each day for any chance of me being able to get the GT2 wheels on my Turbo.

I have asked my OPC but there doesn't seem to be a way to get non-standard Turbo wheels fitted straight from the factory.

As such I thought I would take a little pole on what you guys think of the Turbo wheels. Interested to know your thoughts...

    Re: Turbo wheels

I would get the GT3 wheels if I had a TT

    Re: Turbo wheels

I went with the GT3 RS wheels. So far, we haven't gotten official confirmation on whether or not the GT2 wheels ARE in fact different than the GT3 RS wheels. Besides, if the GT2 wheels were in fact wider than the RS wheels, I'm not sure how they'd fit in the 997TT. I actually was under the impression that the GT2 was the same width as the 997TT.

How do the GT3RS wheels compare to the GT2 and Turbo ones:

    Re: Turbo wheels

Track considerations and personal cosmetic preferences aside, I'm heartily recommending the stock Turbo wheels.

Why? Because the inner parts are painted the brown; the wheels can be loaded with dirt and brake dust and yet they look "clean."

If you want them to look almost perfect: just wipe the flat-faced polished metallic parts off with a rag; no need to wash them.

I had Carrera classics on my 997s and thougth THEY were easy to keep "clean-looking." Turbo wheels are a quantum leap forward in the area of lazy-maintenance-for-wheels.

    Re: Turbo wheels

MMD, Brown? Look again, they're painted grey. There are some folks out there (myself included) that doesn't like the look of the stock wheels. That's why I swapped them out. Besides there's less brake dust with the PCCBs that I have. And as a bonus, the GT3/GT2/RS wheels are MUCH easier to clean than the Turbo wheels.

Alex, comparing the GT2 wheel specs with the info I have about the RS wheels:

    Front:
    8.5 J x 19 RO53
    P/N 997.362.156.95 (silver) or 997.362.156.96 FFF (041 Black /8C6 Orange)

    Rear
    12 J x 19 RO 51
    P/N 997.362.164.91 (silver) or 997.362.164.92 FFF (041 Black /8C6 Orange)

It looks like they're identical. We don't know if they're forged though. The RS wheels are pressure cast.

    Re: Turbo wheels

Looks like the GT2 wheels have the same dimensions as the GT3RS wheels except the GT2 mounts a wider tire (325 v. 305). The 325 actually is probably a better fit than the 305 on a 12 inch rim but the GT2 is RWD and the TT is AWD which the wider tire may create problems. Like Atomic80, I run GT3RS wheels on my TT - like the look...but I did save my TT wheels if I decide to go back.

    Re: Turbo wheels

Jeff, I sold my wheels to a local 997TT friend who wants to use them for winter tires. I considered keeping them but ultimately in the end I decided that I'd never use them again.

I don't think that Michelin offers PS2 tires in 325 width with the proper sidewall thickness. Only with PS cups can you get those 325 width tires.

    Re: Turbo wheels

Some more info from the GT2 doc:

    Re: Turbo wheels

Forged wheels are usually stronger and lighter... so does that mean the TT wheels are superior technically to the GT2 wheels?

Unfortunatley my garage is filled with take-off parts "I might use again". I used your suggestion for the exhaust tip coating and should have the tips back soon. I have a Europipe system with 76mm outlets so I had to wait to get the modified tips to send out. I'll post pics soon. Thanks again for the reference to Performance Coatings.

Hummm..., weird. I removed the slate grey colored ashtray from my painted console and put it right next to the wheels. I'd say they are identical (except the car's color has more black). Slate grey is undeniably brownish, that's why I must have said "brown." Anyway whatever color they are, what's interesting is they "match" the color of "brown" brake dust very well.

I also don't like the stock wheels that much, but i hoped that Porsche will bring some nice rims with the GT2. I'm a little bit disappointed about using just the RS wheels.

Anyway, i will use my stock wheel in winter and will probably go for the RS wheels in spring. Do you use them with wheel spacers?

    Re: Turbo wheels

No spacers are needed with the RS wheels. That's why I went with them in the first place. I originally had GT3 wheels which needed 18mm spacers in the rear.

MMD, maybe it's the lighting that made yours appear to be brown. I do know that they made it very similar to slate grey so that might be the reason.

Lighting (or vitamin deficiency) is a definite possibility! At any rate Turbo wheels are very close to "warm" Slate Grey and they are painted on the interior (at last!) so there's no huge light/silver area to show messes.

    Re: Turbo wheels

I think the RS wheels look best but the Turbo wheels may be the best (stornger and lighter). The Turbo wheels are a PITA to throughly clean and polish. I recently had mine off the car to install coilovers and took the opportunity to clean and polish inside and out.

    Re: Turbo wheels

I like the standard tt wheels and the rs wheels are heavier I guess.

    Re: Turbo wheels

    They're VERY close in weight.

    Porsche Factory forged turbo
    8.5x19" 23 lbs. 8 oz
    11x19" 27 lbs. 14 oz.

    Factory 997 GT3
    8.5x19" 24 lbs. 5 oz.
    12x19" 30 lbs. 13 oz.

    Re: Turbo wheels

That's true, but the wheel weight is rotational and therefore has a multiplicative impact on acceleration. When people spend significant amount of money to get weight savings with carbon panels, aluminum and carbon ceramic weight. I find it interesting that Porsche would use cast wheels on the ultimate 911 and forged on and lesser turbo.

    Re: Turbo wheels

    Just for fun... .

Here's stock "brown" Turbo wheels and a Slate Grey car.

Can it be Slate Grey (and Turbo wheels) are like Atlas? They stubbornly appear differently under hard-to-perceive different conditions?

Yes, the internet is a bad place to compare colors; in real life though the "brown" (brake dust color) appears consistently.

    Re: Turbo wheels

It's closer to Meteor than Slate.

My guess is that they do that on purpose to meet the extremely rigid TUV standards. I've noticed that wheels offered by German companies/tuners tends to be heavier. I would bet that the superlight offerings from Champion, etc would not pass TUV standards. An exception would be those $$$ magnesium wheels from Manthey.

    AWGGGH!

    ( )

No way..., again, when I place my an ash tray lid from my painted console (Slate Grey) next to my Turbo wheels I'm impressed that it's the "exact" same hue (one of them (forgot which) has slightly more black).

Hummm..., Could it be I have strangely-colored wheels?

    Re: Turbo wheels

My slate car with stock wheels and PCCB go quite well together.

    Re: Turbo wheels

I decided to go with the 19" Champion RF67 wheels which are similar to the GT3 wheel in design but are forged rather than cast. Absolutely no regrets. No spacers required and machined for TPMS.
