sunday times- 430 scud vs gt2

    http://driving.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/driving/new_car_reviews/article2594978.ece

"Which to choose? If you had only one car, it's the Porsche by a mile. You could drive it like a Ford Fiesta through the traffic and forget the potential it packs - it is a practical everyday car. Used in this role, the deliciously deafening Scuderia would drive you to your wits' end.

But people who can afford cars like this never have just one car. In which case the Ferrari is worth every pound that separates the two: it's not so much what it does and the way it does it that makes this the most exciting modern supercar I've driven - and yes, that includes the Bugatti Veyron. "

Re: sunday times- 430 scud vs gt2

    thks for the link

Re: sunday times- 430 scud vs gt2

    I enjoyed reading it myself.

Re: sunday times- 430 scud vs gt2

As an owner of 996 Turbo and 430 Spyder, I could not agree more with the article. Turbo is much easier to get around in and more practical, but 430 truly stirs your soul and invigorates you. I'm sure the Scud magnifies those feelings.

Re: sunday times- 430 scud vs gt2

Those of us who have owned both, Porsche and Ferrari, will find this comparison in line with what we have experienced. The Porsche is extremely competent while the Ferrari is not only competent but also has a sense of drama and occasion.

However, I am surprised he only gave the GT2 4 stars.

Re: sunday times- 430 scud vs gt2

Wow... this car must be hell.... grrrrrrr... wannnnna drive it!

Did you not catch the part that the GT2 is also "practical everyday car."? The Ferrari 430 Scuderia is not what I would call a "practical everyday car." BTW, Nick, didn't you say the GT2 wasn't a street car? Didn't you say that only posers would buy it for street driving? LOL. Nick, you crack me up!!!!

Re: sunday times- 430 scud vs gt2

Why is street driving an element of purchase for a 200k+ vehicle. Anyone who can afford either of these vehicle can afford a prius to pick up the laundry.

I don't understand what some people expect out of these vehicles. They want uncompromising performance and extremely low NBR lap times but they can't accept low bumper clearance or a harsh ride. Physics is physics...

Both cars are fantastic and their respective fortes are quite obvious.

    Agree

Re: sunday times- 430 scud vs gt2

You don't buy a Ferrari for:
    - Everyday practicality
    - Fuel economy
    - Driveability in inclimate weather
    - Crash test results

Re: sunday times- 430 scud vs gt2

In SF/LA, there are more than a few affluent guys who are frequent-repeat F/AMG buyers; who can and do commute daily by new AMG/F....and have no need for the silly, girlie winter wheels/tires (and reduced speeds/poor traction roads) w/which car guys in Greenwich/London/Germany need to suffer for ?5mos/yr, once temps fall below 45F....

5 yrs ago, F realized that many major CA F/AMG buyers were rather enamored w/their then-latest-tech SL55s (even vs their then-current 360, even in wkend mtn twisties driving )....suspect much of 599 development is inspired by this need to have a daily-useable commuter and wkend car for this jaded crowd in the major SiliconValley/BevHills mkts....which both have nearby mtn twisties for yr-round wkend driving...and, in case of SiliconValley, one of world's fastest urban fwys, which quickly reveals any car's real-world tq/shift speeds/any turbo lag in routine daily commuting....

F has solved quality/reliability/daily-useability issues w/its 599 (IMO easily exceeds 997TT in all these measures), but F has failed to solve its passive safety issues/risks...perhaps higher-vol produc w/Dino will allow F to have infrastruc/scale for better safety R&D/engineering....

Until F engineers more competent AMG-like safety, suspect many jaded repeat buyers in CA will opt for CL63 for their daily and most of their wkend driving....risk exposure of 599/Scud is likely to be limited by most owners who have limited tolerance for elevated risk of injury/death in any collision...and who have no desire to figure out how to become a wkend amateur firefighter.....

And the several guys I know who own both CL63 and 599 seem to favor their CL63, even in mtn twisties, for overall perf/safety/precision risk/reward balance....doubt Scud will change that observation....but will be fun to do back-to-backs to confirm....conventional wisdom is often wrong; need to do own back-to-backs to draw intelligent, subjective conclusions....

Re: sunday times- 430 scud vs gt2

    Just one question:
Are you really thinking that CL63 is the worlds best current sportscar(??!!) for mtn twisities, precision driving, driver involvement etc.?

If the answer is YES then I am very sorry but, IMHO you are just average driver. Since you prefer slush box/Exxon-like-tanker size car over true sportscars. No hard or bad feeling from me but, I have a feeling that 99.99% of members here disagree with you big time as I do...

btw, my daily driver is the CL, so I know ........

Re: sunday times- 430 scud vs gt2

    Well said Kreso!

Re: sunday times- 430 scud vs gt2

I drove the CL63 the other day and it is not a sports car IMO. It's definately a very nice expensive luxurious car, but far from what I would consider a sports car. Did I mention expensive

Re: sunday times- 430 scud vs gt2

Sorry I will stop trollin around the Ferrari board now

Re: sunday times- 430 scud vs gt2

How can a heavy four seater with an auto box considered a sports car?

Re: sunday times- 430 scud vs gt2

Stop talking bad about the TT

Re: sunday times- 430 scud vs gt2

WBH, what you have said is a joke. I doubt very much if you have driven either a 599 or a CL63. If you have, then you must be a pretty average driver who doesn't drive very fast in the twisties!
