Track impressions: Techart springs & Gt3 alignment

I finally got to the track this morning to try out the following mods - Techart lowering springs on the stock dampeners, Gt3 street alignment. Tires used are 18" Hoosier R6 at 40/44 hot front/rear. Temps 75F, and car has stage II GIAC/AWE engine mods, running 100 octane fuel. I have run the same car with the same mods previously but without the springs and alignment, so I have a basis for comparison. Also, car was run in Sport mode with sport PASM on and also PSM left on.

Handling wise, car is tightened up considerably. There is no understeer/push whatsoever. The nose turns in quickly and sharply. The rear end also is much more planted without feeling loose in high speed turns. I have a bad habit of making mid-corner corrections instead of setting the turn and steering with the throttle. The suspension never feels unsettled no matter the surface imperfections. No more pogo over rough transitions. The progressive rate Techart springs also don't feel overly harsh and there is never any bottoming out. This is the most planted and secure feeling car I have ever been on track with, and that includes my dedicated race/track car. There is a tremendous amount of feedback in your butt that is available now that the car feels more settled. The only thing that I would try to improve is the body lean. There is still just a touch much of it, and stiffer sways may help. AWE sells adjustable H&R's for the car, and GMG has adjustable Eibach's coming.

Power wise, I have to say that the GIAC in Race mode with 100 octane is simply a very sick and surreal experience. In street mode sometimes I would get a slight boost tail-off or timing retardation near redline. There is none now. Oil temps never got over 210F, and water temps were dead center. Boost was constantly at 18#, and I am hitting an easy 165mph before the end of the front straight at TWS. Considering that my exit from turn 15 is less than perfect, that the car would be even faster in 50F weather, and that I am too chicken so I brake hard at the end of the straight, downshift to 4th prior to turning into turn #1, I think 170mph at the end is easily possible. As far as I know, even the Cup cars can only hit 160mph at the end of the straight.

    Some laps from today:

Eclou, awesome video and writeup. Thanks for the update, if you don't mind, when it comes time for modifications, I will probably follow your lead!

Re: Track impressions: Techart springs & Gt3 alignment

Pretty cool! I was wondering I want to make my turbo more tighter and want to eliminate that pogo feel. Could you tell me what is your alignment?

Re: Track impressions: Techart springs & Gt3 align

    Gt3 street alignment:

    front
    camber -1.2
    caster 7.5
    toe 0.04

    rear
    camber -1.6
    toe 0.16

The front camber will only be achievable by lowering the car or with camber adjustable arms

Re: Track impressions: Techart springs & Gt3 align

    Thanks!

whats better techart springs or H&R?

Re: Track impressions: Techart springs & Gt3 align

The Techart springs are a progressive rate spring that soaks up some of the chop in the road. The H&R's are a linear spring.

Re: Track impressions: Techart springs & Gt3 align

VERY cool vid. How 'bout some before/after pics of the wheel well spacing?

Re: Track impressions: Techart springs & Gt3 align

How are you able to ues the GT3 alignment when the springs and other components are presumably different?

Re: Track impressions: Techart springs & Gt3 align

Moogle, all suspensions have a range of adjustability to them. The range of the stock TT will allow Gt3 alignment in the rear but not in the front. When you lower any car, there is always going to be more negative camber available. Thus after lowering my car, I was then able to achieve GT3 street specs. The Gt3 track specs are still out of my range unless I add adjustable control arms in the front or camber plates.

Re: Track impressions: Techart springs & Gt3 align

Are you not concerned that PASM is not valved for those springs? On Rennlist, there are many posts about premature PASM failures because of this.

Re: Track impressions: Techart springs & Gt3 align

Techart advertises these as PASM compatible springs. If and when the dampeners fail, I can have them rebuilt with shorter pistons by Bilstein in California for about $100 per corner.

Re: Track impressions: Techart springs & Gt3 align

Had mine out yesterday at the glen, flat hauls arse in sport mode, 148 mph on the back, 2:13, personal best. Next yr; cups, lowered , aggressive alignment!

Re: Track impressions: Techart springs & Gt3 align

Eclou: Is it possible to get GT3 specs only by adding camber plates without lowering? If yes, wich brand for a 997TT?
    Thanks a lot

Re: Track impressions: Techart springs & Gt3 align

Eclou, I noted on your GT3 alignment specs that it's not possible to get to the -1.2 front camber spec unless you lowered the car or changed out the camber plates. Is that truly the case here? I didn't realize that the GT3 was lower than the Turbo. I'd really like to have my Turbo realigned to GT3 specs but not if it means I'd have to get the car lowered. I plan to get a coilover suspension system at some point down the road in lieu of swapping out just the springs.

Re: Track impressions: Techart springs & Gt3 align

Funny, Alcyon was wondering the same thing I was!

Re: Track impressions: Techart springs & Gt3 align

Jason, must be we are on the same starship:the Turbo!

Re: Track impressions: Techart springs & Gt3 align

You can get the camber you want by inverting the mounting points on the spring mount. Not sure if this is applicable to the turbo but it works on the GT3.

Re: Track impressions: Techart springs & Gt3 align

Inverting the mounting points? Hmmm...interesting, I'll ask the technicians when I get this done.

Re: Track impressions: Techart springs & Gt3 align

You should be able to buy camber plates or adjustable camber arms or both to achieve the Gt3 alignment sans lowering. The benefits of lowering beyond just alignment (aesthetics, lower Cd) is why I chose to do the springs.

The GT3 strut hats are designed with 6 holes for the 3 studs - you can rotate the struts 60 deg to achieve higher neg camber (> -2.0). This is not the case in the TT.

Re: Track impressions: Techart springs & Gt3 alignment

Eclou: First off, fantastic video. I have already downloaded and sent off to a few of my friends (your royalty payments are "in the mail" ;-) ).

A few questions for you: 1) Your video looks quite good, clear and reasonably stable even at high speeds. What kind of video camera and mounting system did you use?, 2) I have been toying with the idea of getting a RaceLogic VBox Mini. The system in your video looks like the VBox Mini, but you refer to it as a "Performance Box with GPS", is this a different system? Does this system of yours allow for data to be saved on memory card and then reviewed on PC? If so, what software do you use to review/analyze data?, and 3) Do you have rollcage (partial or full) in your car? If so, did you go with Porsche or non-OEM prduct?

    Thanks in advance.
    Tim

Re: Track impressions: Techart springs & Gt3 align

    Tim,

The cam is a Sony HDR-HC1 high def camera recording to tape. The mount is a "gripper" from Vacuummounts.com (6" suction cup). The data logger is a Performance Box by Racelogic - their most modest offering which does record to memory card. The software is included from Racelogic. No rollcage yet. Thanks for the feedback
