Stock clutch done at 8k miles

    Well,

my stock clutch is starting to slip. Can't hold any power in 6th gear on the highway. 600+ ftlbs is too much. I am going with the Sachs stg II clutch kit. It figures it would go just 2 days before the Texas Mile vmax.

Never heard of such poor durability. Tell us how you launch a car.

Re: Stock clutch done at 8k miles

I have not done any stop-start launches except for 3 runs with the Performance Box. However, I have done about a half dozen track events. I have spoken to some of the tuners here and they all have had to replace the clutches with heavier units

    wich mods do you have?!

Re: Stock clutch done at 8k miles

eclou - Is there a "safe" amount of torgue that the standard clutch can handle? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I don't know very much about modifying Turbos.

Re: Stock clutch done at 8k miles

Stg II = ecu + exhaust. I think this shows why Ruf adds a clutch to their package

    Eclou,

For comparison sake, on my 996TSCab modded with EVO's packages, I did their stage 4 (600HP/600lb-ft) upgrade in the winter of 2005-6, and my mechanic said the stock clutch was slipping at 4K rpm's in 2nd gear during the test drives, so I changed to the Sachs level 2 on the spot. Then last winter, I went up to EVO's GT700 package (700HP/700lb-ft) and had the mechanic change to the Sachs level 3 since I had heard the level 2 could have "issues" and very premature wear at 700HP/lb-ft. It works great, and except for some "learning" on moving from a stop in 1st gear in street traffic ( ), the clutch is easy and never slips. I do not know if the 997TT stock clutch has similar specs. to that of the 996TT's (I think in the 996TT's, anything past 550lb-ft/HP was asking for trouble). I am sure you'll be pleased with the Sachs level 2 on yours.

    Al

Re: Stock clutch done at 8k miles

From what I understand, the Sachs kits are identical for the 996tt and 997tt.

Re: Stock clutch done at 8k miles

Eugene, the surprising thing here is that your stock clutch lasted that long actually! Anything close to 800nm of torque requires the sachs sports clutch. Have it on my 997tt from the first day I bought it (and modded it) and had it for years in my 996tt. Its a very good (and necessary imo) addition for modded turbos and -especially in the 996tt- it added some feeling to the otherwise muted clutch engagment feeling.
Recently a friend with a 996tts with 830nm had to change it since it was impossible to tune the car on the dyno from the slippage of the stock clutch.

Re: Stock clutch done at 8k miles

Is there much difference in pedal effort? I drive in a lot of stop & go traffic.
