Mods for my 997 Cab S

I just got my dream car. A brand new arctic silver 2007 997 Cab 'S'. It's got Bose Surround Sound, power seat package, 19' rims, and very few other expensive options. I wish I got the Sports Chrono Package, but I couldn't wait for one that had it, and didn't have some $4,000 upgraded leather, or other options that I'd never appreciate.

I drive it aggressively in the canyons on Sunday mornings, with all the other L.A. nutcases, and I want a few more ponies out of the motor. I don't drive it daily, or sit in traffic or use it to buy groceries, or run errands. It's covered in the garage, except when I'm using it to drive very fast.

I looked into changing the exhaust, putting in a new intake tract, that replaces the airbox with a cone, and possibly a chip. If I'm to believe the claimed horsepower increases these parts advertise, I'd get about 50 horsepower, but I don't believe there would be that big of a gain.

I did these exact mods on my old 97 993 cab, and there was an improvement in power, and sound. It was noticeable, but the check engine light was on all the time.

Anyone done any of these mods? Any input? The X51 option was way overpriced. 17grand. I could put a different engine in the thing for that kind of money. I don't want to mess with it too much, because it's pretty good right now, but I'd like better sound, and a some more power, so I can keep up with that z06 vette that smoked me last sunday.

I used to beef up mustanges before I could afford porsches, it was easy, and cheap. This is a bit different.

Re: Mods for my 997 Cab S

A couple of really nice things to have: PSE and perhaps a supercharger,--if you need a little more boost. The PSE is quite inexpensive. If 355 isn't enough try RUF with their supercharging treatment. I don't think you get squat out of those cones and chips. I would dyno it first with thorough documentation and then later to see if you got anything for your money. Generally everyone 'senses' they added HP, but I know that Porsche doesn't consider leaving the low hanging fruit behind,--so why can some aftermarket guy pull another 20-30hp out of it with some minor changes?

easy answer.. i think an evolution motorsport super-charger is the way forward for you. They have an excellent reputation for high quality products and I have seen many favourable reviews in several (albeit U.K.) magazines. They add around 120-150 hp to your engine.

    hope that helps!

Re: Mods for my 997 Cab S

Thanks for the advice. I was driving my car again tonight, and again, I was thinking that I need a bit more power, and sound. It's a fantastic car, no doubt, and it's so smooth, it's deceptive, but the standard sound just isn't thrilling enough until you really ring it out, and with only 1100 miles, I can't do that too much. I'm trying to be somewhat concervative during break in. How much is the P. Sports Exhaust? Does that add any power, or only sound. Is an aftermarket system an option? They claim power increases, and I imagine that the factory exhaust can't be very much louder than the standard, for government reasons. Especially in California. Does anyone know the differences in the exhausts between Ca and the other states?

Re: Mods for my 997 Cab S

I started a an S at the dealer and toggled the switch on the PSE back and forth, and I couldn't really hear any difference. Is it much louder? I don't want to drop the large dollars only to find it's marginally louder. Does it crank?

Re: Mods for my 997 Cab S

I have the PSE on my new C4S cab and I didn't have it on my old C2S. To my mind its markedly louder and a much richer sound, much closer to the old air cooled sound, but I do have to caveat that with the fact that I now have a Cab rather than a Coupe which could account for some of the noise difference but its very smooth and quiet sounding when you turn off the PSE.

Plus you also get the chrome exhaust which really does look so much better than the rough looking stock item.

I think a number of people who complain about how the standard sound of the C2S is too soft don't realize what it sounds like in a Cab or from the outside. The new 997S is really a great GT car, with excellent soundproofing. Driving with the top down, near some good reflective surface like a concrete wall or inside a tunnel, you really appreciate the engine sound. Since I put my hard top on a couple of weeks ago I miss the sound

Re: Mods for my 997 Cab S

I think if you ask most of us with cabs that have PSE you will get a strong positive recommendation, particularly if you modify the switch to be on all the time. This experience is greatly enhanced with the top down. As for power upgrades it depends on if you don't mind voiding the warrenty and significantly deceasing the life of your engine. If you don't mind the answer is supercharging if you do mind short of a X51 the increase will likely not be enough to satisfy you. I agree with Trundle in an earlier post that a Porsche driving school will greatly enhance your cars performance. Cheers!

Re: Mods for my 997 Cab S

I must agree... many have asked this question before, and I always thought that investing in your driving skills was the best choice... it's money you keep for life... it's money you carry with till the next car, unlike any mods. you may do to it... improve your driving skills through PDE courses... and then move on to a GT3 or a TT... best choice... my choice :-)

Re: Mods for my 997 Cab S

put a full awe-tuning exhaust , a rss plenum and an evoms supercharger kit,you will have a least 500-520hp , best bang for the bucks

Don't forget the stickers, they add 10hp, EACH

Re: Mods for my 997 Cab S

Yet another guy who will sink a ton of dough into a car that comes from the factory doing an honest 180mph, and then get smoked at the track by a guy in a Mazda 323 who actually knows how to drive. No, I don't want to do the PDE course, I'm too bitchin'

Re: Mods for my 997 Cab S

just drive it a while, master it, and upgrade to a GT3... do the math...
