How do I get an update for my navigation?

I have a 2005 997S with navigation, the DVD that's in there is dated 2004... Not that I travel brand new roads that often, but for example, they reconfigured the onramp to the freeway by my house and instead of a left onto the freeway, it's now a right, and as I was taking a right, it kept telling me to turn left, then at 70 MPH it said to do a U-Turn... And although it sounded fun, it probably wasn't advisable...

How do I go about getting a new, updated DVD? Is that something that you can just request from a dealer or do you have to buy it?

Re: How do I get an update for my navigation?

Part number 000 044 900 89 retails for $199.00 plus installation cost. For model year 2005 vehicles.

Re: How do I get an update for my navigation?

I wonder what installation cost? All they have to do is put the DVD in the NAV unit in the trunk. Is there something else?

Re: How do I get an update for my navigation?

    I can't just get a new DVD?

What needs to be installed for Part number 000 044 900 89 ?

Where do I look it up and order it?

The part number is the DVD disc. Try http://www.sunsetimports.com - they have very good prices.

I am just passing on what it says on the offer from Porsche about the update. I looked into getting an update early last year and you couldn't just buy an updated Nav disk, you also had to update your PCM software. By the time it was all over it was going to cost about $500.

I don't know about this particular update, but I have to wonder if it requires a PCM update also and that is why Porsche says "plus installation". Any of us could simply load a new disk.......so there might be more involved.

Re: How do I get an update for my navigation?

Hmmm, I would think that since what I have now gets it's info from the DVD that all I need to do is put an udated DVD in there and it should work... But it seems that it may also need an update to the PCM??? or at least that's what Part number 000 044 900 89 sounds like, which by the way, I didn't find on that website....

I'd like to try making a copy of someones newer DVD and throwing it in there and seeing if it worked....

Sunset ROCKS. Been buying parts from them for years!
They can answer all these questions as well. Please post the installation details when you get them as I am also interested in updating my old 05.

    Thanks,
    Cheers

Re: How do I get an update for my navigation?

There is one way to find out. I will email Sunset today and ask them if this is simply a new disk to replace the existing disk or does it also require a PCM software update. I will let everyone know their answer.

Re: How do I get an update for my navigation?

Find a friend with a new car if you catch my drift. It's just a DVD.

Re: How do I get an update for my navigation?

I don't have any friends with newer 997's, they all have Mercedes, BMW's, Lambos or Ferraris.... Anyone in the Westlake Village, Calbasas area wanna be my "friend"???...LOL

Re: How do I get an update for my navigation?

I had a european DVD, but when I moved back to the states I got the 2006 US DVD for the low price of $500...complete rip-off. If you are buying an update they should give a big discount. Sucks that I still have the european disc too.

Re: How do I get an update for my navigation?

Navteq is the company that supplies the DVDs... you may be able to call them direct and get an answer.

Tried that once. They won't sell you an update. They tell you to contact Porsche.

Re: How do I get an update for my navigation?

Just got off the phone with the parts department at Sunset Porsche. I was told that the navigation update disk is all that is required. No PCM update is required. The bad news is there is no discount on the disk since cost is $197 and suggested retail is $199.

So, if you have a 2005 Cayenne, 911 or Boxster you can upgrade your nav system for $199.

    Part numbers:
    911/Boxster 000 044 900 89
    Cayenne 955 044 900 08

These are for 2005 model year cars only. After 2005 the PCM was updated to version 2.1 and those cars take different nav disks. You can update your 2005 to PCM version 2.1 and use those disks, but a PCM and Nav disk update costs about $500.

Re: How do I get an update for my navigation?

Really, that's very good to know. And since I have a MY2005, I can pay them $199 and get an updated DVD.... I wonder if it does anything else besides just have more roads on it? Because I really don't drive the car that much and certainly not long distance, so if it just has a few new housing developments that were built since 2005, it may not be of much use to me..... ? And I wonder how much better the version 2.1 update with the new DVD is?

Thanks for finding this stuff out Phil!!!

In addition to more roads/cities the new disks are supposed to have more points of interest info such as hotels, restaurants, banks, gas stations, parks, recreational centers, etc. It is also supposed to be more precise in determining where you are at any given time. I may look into getting one. If you buy one, I would suggest that you install it in your car while you are still at the dealer just in case it messes up.

Re: How do I get an update for my navigation?

I have seen some on ebay, but it seams they go for more than the dealers price, maybe there hard to get. Here is one that I found no res. but no buy now so who know where it will end up.

Re: How do I get an update for my navigation?

why do you need an update? how much do the roads change in a couple of years... not much

Re: How do I get an update for my navigation?

I finally bought the navigation update for my 2005 Cayenne yesterday (the upgrade for 2005 997's is similar). I was told that it was simply a new DVD navigation disk, but it also includes a CD disk to update your PCM from version 2.1a to 2.1b. There are several warnings on the package that only a Porsche dealership should handle the PCM update. I happened to talk my dealer into doing it for free, but the Porsche TSB (9/05 9110)for this shows that they charge "70 time units" for this procedure. It is a relatively simple procedure that you could do yourself.

After you update your PCM you can then install the new nav DVD. Do not operate the updated system with the old nav disk, it can goof things up. Also, do not try to use the new nav disk if you have not updated the PCM version.

I haven't had much chance to use it yet, but the maps appear much more detailed.

It cost me $198.00 for the disks.

Re: How do I get an update for my navigation?

One of the best features of the updated nav disks in the ability to enter a city be zip code using the numerical keypad. Much easier that using the turn knob on the PCM. You can also enter the street address using the keypad. These may be features already available to owners of newer 997's, but not for those of us with 2005's.

You cannot simply add an updated DVD nav disk. You MUST also update your PCM using the supplied CD. It is supposed to be done by the dealer only according to several warnings in the package.

Re: How do I get an update for my navigation?

hello, I've bought an used my05 997S with 2004 dvd map. Porsche has update my PCM for free with 2 CD, because my pcm has telephone module. after the pcm is finished and get the 2.1b software, then start with 2005 dvd and update the navigation software, after that the 2006 with new soft update message and finally the 2007 dvd that i paid for.
the system doesn't read the old dvd's maps
is no dificult to do it, only is necessary the 2 CD and the dvd maps. i saw all they did in my car ... insert disc's

this is only for MY05 model cars. from april 2005 the 997 had the 2.1b soft in the pcm

Re: How do I get an update for my navigation?

Geez $ 198.00 for the DVD is not bad at all compared to France.

Here, they want to charge me Euro 400 excluding sales tax ie Euro 478.4 including tax and then 1/2 hour labour cost to upgrade the PCM software from 2.1a to 2.1b or an additional Euro 50.0

Bottom line it's going to cost me around Euro 528.4 just to update it.... it's an absolute rip-off.

For that amount of money I can buy 2 brand new TomTom !!!!

Do you still have the update disk, would you like to sell them or upload them for all the member to share?

The one I have is supposedly only for the Cayenne. It has a Cayenne part number. There is a different part number for the 997.
