We might also see, in the 992,  the demise of the manual gearbox .

Not a fan of all the shiny plastic bits and buttons around the gear lever. Even Audis has better interior plastic

Re: 992 (Next 911 generation 2018/2019) Thread Closed

The whole design of the centre tunnel console seems poorly executed with the air distribution vents looking like a jarring after thought. Of all the new models seen thus far with this design - Panamera, Cayenne and now 992 - it only seems to flow cohesively in the Panamera. The Cayenne has a rather awkward and disjointed design around this air vent area as well.

The design of the Braun PES gear selector does make it look like a manual gearbox option may about to be consigned to history with the 991.2 generation. It is also interesting that real buttons appear to be retained for the heated seat functions whilst the covered sections either side of the Braun look like they may be the haptic control layout from the Panamera which would be an odd match IMHO.

    KMM:

BTW, it does to appear to support manual shifting. Notice the markings on it, and the single gait.

I can't see any such markings that clearly hint at manual shifts; just R-N-D positions which is the minimum any auto must have. Looks like Park is selected with a button, and Manual shifting by another button - this is a step backwards as in current PDK one just has to slide the lever to the left to engage manual shifting, an action that does not require you to look down.  Hitting this "M" button will now require a glance.

Possible, but that would be a change from how PDK has worked since its introduction - till now, a paddle shift while in auto mode overrides auto for several seconds only, then it goes back to auto.

That's how the 918's PDK operates.

Just a Park button, the shifter only has Drive, Neutral and Reverse.

Gear change can be initiated on the steering wheel paddles for temporary overrides. To go into manual mode, press a button on the steering wheel.

So basically the 992 could be using the 918 method. Another 'trickle down' thingy from the 918. The worse of all is the all glass touch screen Smiley

On second look, that gear lever on the 992 looks to be about the same size as the one on the 918 too.

This isn’t called progress. The 911 has evolved dramatically in the last 5 years, a very different car than what it was. But a car of our times. I like it.

I'd have loved to see a return to an original 911 dash layout with a purposeful minimalist look that enhanced the feeling of interior cabin space. It could have utilised the basic design of the 918 with the infotainment focused on the driver, removing the centre console stack altogether and laying out the various controls for the gear shift, infotainment, heated seats, HVAC, PSE etc on a flatter stylish console on the centre tunnel. I guess the luxury GT market is not ready for this though.

I think the MT will be reserved for the special editions and perhaps GT cars where Porsche can realize additional margin. Porsche might also reserve the MT for Boxster and Cayman.

The interior of the 911 should be as simple as possible . ISUK's photoshop is  what it should be .

Unfortunately  the direction the new interior goes is the opposite . More cosy, more features, more confort , more '' sedan'' feeling ........ way apart form the purity of the example of Singer . enlightened

I don't know how much longer I will be able to adapt surprise Already the 991 interior  is a step  too far for me

I think the barrier to returning the 911 to it's function of sports car is the lack of a 928 successor which means that Porsche are trying to cover two distinct customer groups with one car hence why the interior becomes ever further away from the ethos of simplicity of both form and function.

If they were to introduce a front engined, two door GT car using a shortened Panamera platform or possibly as a complete new model within the Mission E family then the 911 could be repositioned. Simplify the model range and abandon the Carrera name and return to the system of T for the base "touring" model, S and GTS. Add in option packages that influence the look of the car such as a "historic" pack that brings the aluminium window trim surrounds, a Fuchs style 5 spoke wheel design, cloth seat inserts, distinct historic exterior colour palette etc. That would be very popular in markets such as the UK and US I suspect.

Re: 992 (Next 911 generation 2018/2019) Thread Closed

I think only Preuninger's dept. will create the 911 experiences the older generation of us is looking for. I would not buy any "normal" Porsche product anymore - actually never have.

The problem is: Porsche has no 928 successor. So they need to satisfy a huge variety of customers with the 911.

Best solution would be to offer a "racer" version of the 911, an optional 911 RS for example, which is stripped down to basics but still gets the most powerful engine and best chassis/braking tech. Of course including PDK and rear seats.

As opposed to most in here I like it. I even think they could have gone much further and think the "overhaul" is a bit too conservative. Ditch the analogue rev counter, entirely get rid of the gear lever, etc. Why not move with the times and develop? I'm sure that the market for all the new tech in a 911 is there and many customers would appreciate it. For those who think "old is better" the simple solution is to stick with the old and historical car with manual shifter, the analogue feeling, less electronic gizmos etc.

They could offer a more raw interior for the upcoming RS-models, but for the base 911 which for many is a sporty daily driver all the tech, assistant systems and creature comfort is as important as the performance.

All they need to do is split further the regular Carrera and the GT models, then give us the GT models we want: wing delete option, PDK, 4 seats option, more sporty leaner interior, and the holy grail: chop the roof. I have been clamoring this for the better part of the last decade and that’s one of the reasons I have moved away from 911, as many have here.

The real issue they have if they do that is margins and sale volumes of the higher priced Carreras...

Re: 992 (Next 911 generation 2018/2019) Thread Closed

the center console in the spyshot looks very panamera tech and 918 mix...

but the photoshop would be the real deal...what good rendering compare to the crappy evolution.

I guess getting rid of NA engines and going more into refined small Panamera like will definitely make me save money on new car to study the old ladies market.
