Re: 991.2 Carrera GTS Convertible (2018) - Short Review

    Christian,

What a great deal you got there. I'm always impressed by the deals you end-up getting. In Belgium, there's now way you could get such an opportunity. Do you know if it 's possible for a foreigner to lease or rent a P-car in germany  and deduct the leasing cost in another country as a company car ? I should investigate because lease prices are definitely not the same in Belgium.

Anyway, congrats on your new GTS ! It looks really nice.

Your wheel with winter tires looks a bit strange indeed though. I'd check that too.

With the exception of a Toyota Landcruiser, I do not think there is a car i have owned in the last 20 yrs where the tyres have provided any real protection for the rims against curbs.

Porsche uses tires with rim protection but of course it only works when you park the car and drive very very slowly, the rubber of the rim protection (there is a bulge for this purpose on my Sottozero) rubs against the curb and not much happens to the tire (that bulge is just rubber and has no safety purpose) but the rim is protected. Even if you "cut" the tire and need to replace it, it is cheaper than getting a new rim or having to repair it.

Rims and external paint too are “disposable”. If something happens, you just get it fixed and move on. That’s why only my Aston has a partial bra (this one is a special 7 layer paint). Others like Porsche or even Ferraris are not special enough to even worry about it.

Rims are expensive, even if they have to be repaired (and painted) only. If it is possible (if the damage is too big...not that it happens often from a smooth curb touching). A tire is usually less expensive and/or the rubber protection avoids damage.

I have have many rims repaired for cosmetic dings, usually $150 to $200 per rim and you cannot tell it was repaired. Not even worth agonizing about it.

This is the only problem with a leased car, it needs to be done perfectly and to (factory) specs.

Some minor damages are acceptable (like minor scratches, dents, etc.) but when it is a "cut" or serious deep scratch, a new rim might be required, depends on the repair possibilities.

I never had issues with returning leased cars, with the exception of the rims. If the rim is damaged...well... Smiley

The proper winter wheel set for the turbo/gt3 at least has a slightly narrower rear wheel.

I know that but apparently Porsche "allows" this combo as well. I haven't noticed any weird driving behavior but I want to make sure this combo is OK (for legal reasons and because I want to be on the safe side, ESP and all).

According to my Porsche dealer the combo is not allowed by Porsche and is hence not road legal in CH. It would surprise me if it is any different in D.

I have been looking at winter tires for my GTS and I have been told to not put 295 winter rubber on the 20 inch summer rims. You need the 20 inch winter rims. 19 inch won’t fit due to RWS.

If you have official written confirmation please PM me.

Thanks, I will check again with my dealer because I suspected the same. I do not think my dealer lied to me, I just think that they didn't check correctly. If he was wrong, they owe me a set of winter wheels, which could be pretty expensive for them (not that I care).

Will check tomorrow again with my mechanic.

The wheel width is different, the winter tires combo with the 295 tires are 1inch narrower in the rear.

Correct winter rims for the 991.2 GTS would be:

    (front) 8.5J x 20 offset 51

    (rear) 11J x 20 offset 59

    Mine are:

    (front) 8.5J x 20 offset 49

    (rear) 11.5J x 20 offset 56

Crap. Smiley Now I'm not surprised the car felt weird but this happens when you trust your dealer. Smiley

Unless of course they got an approval from Porsche but looking at that tire and rim in the rear, I highly doubt it.

Now it is going to be interesting how they fix this problem because this means that they need to give me a new winter wheel set and remove the winter tires from my summer rims. Smiley  So... Smiley

I get a feeling that there is going to be an interesting discussion...to say at least. Deal was not to pay a single dime extra for this deal (only the monthly lease rate, which is the same). Now I am curious how they are going to deal with this.

Today in my daughter's religion class: "What do you think of soccer players or actors who earn millions...?" Don't worry, C63 Cab is no problem. It is a Mercedes... Smiley One of my daughter's class mates (19 years old) drives a C63 Coupe (previous model), no issues. A Porsche is a different story, Cayenne surprisingly not.

We are lucky, kids are at a "better" school. A kid of one of our friends goes to a bigger school downtown and when he is picked up in his mother's X5(!), they call him "Krösus" (rich guy). Lots of kids of immigrants (Turks, Russians, etc.) in this school...  This is where a few weeks ago, a 17 year old hit a teacher for taking away his phone.

It is official now: Combo I am driving is not approved. Somebody at the dealership messed up, they apologized today.

    Great. Smiley

Now I have an appointment to find a solution. I got offered winter tires without N rating in the summer tire sizes but refused because I already had a bad experience with non-N rated winter tires on a 911.

I may get a new winter wheel set in exchange for my "old" one (from my 991.1 GTS) but dealer may be at a loss here, don't know. He wasn't too pleased but there isn't much he can do. They promised me and since they are a serious business (always had a good experience with them), they are going to do the right thing.

Easy way to check: Tirerack.com's website. Here are the specs for the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 N: 11" is the widest allowable rim for the 295mm tire.

Sometimes, Porsche has approvals which aren't available outside the dealer network, also there are seperate TÜV approvals in Germany for different wheel combos.

In my case, there is an approval for non-N rated tires in the summer tire size but I don't think I want this.

Now I need to see what the dealer has to offer next week, when I meet with my mechanic.
