    Paper License Plate vs. Laser. Does it Work?

    What if we had a digital photo of our license plate made and put in up front in place of real _highly_reflective_ plate?

    Does anybody know if this would have any significant value as a laser counter measure?

    As far as getting caught? Only problem is at _night_ when cops could see it as fake if they were coming the other way because there'd be no reflection from his/her headlights.

    There is a company that makes faux plates for the U.S., check google. I'm sure they can make one non-reflective. Still, a laser is just a polarized light, and if visible light bounces off, so will laser. The aluminum flakes in the reflective paint add range, but aren't the only factor. The typical approach is to use Veil, an absorbing coating, but it doesn't look good.

    Faux plates! good idea.

    Ever shine a laser pointer at a Lic plate? The amount of return is amazing. You can even do it in the daytime and see it almost brilliantly.

    So..., if they can't get that huge amount of return reflection _easily_ off your paper-ized (or faux-plated) car maybe it's a good idea.

    It will reduce reflectiveness off the plate so the effect would be that you would need to be nearer the laser gun for it to clock you, but at closer distances it will still clock you nevertheless, especially because the main problem is that the LEO can still get a reading off you headlights really easily if he can't off your plate. So at extreme distances it may work for an initial licence plate shot but overall not much changes unless you have a laser detector warning on that first shot and you are lucky enough to brake in time before he is able to get a reading.

    There is a product called Veil that applied to the licence plate it decrease its reflectiness and you will not have the problems attached to getting caught with fake plates. I see it more as a help for making a laser jammer's work easier and more effective, but don't like its apllication on the headlights since the material is based on graphite and turns the headlights to a darker more opaque color.

    Hummm... . Thanks for the input Carlos. Will consider Veil (good idea) for brake lights because there's only one laser sensor back there and cops supposedly aim for brakelights when behind us.

    I'm pretty sure they can still nail you. Although I had a guy zap me and the guy behind.(detector went off twice. I saw him first and quickly did a nose dive) He did not check off radar use on the ticket. When I asked to verify, the speed on the gun was well within the excessive speed limit of 10mph. No front plate.

    actually, they can give you an even bigger ticket for having a 'non-issued license plate'

    Although everyone understands how reflective plates are, consider your vulnerability from the reflectance from your headlights. Have you ever checked that out? Stand some distance from the front of your 997 and take a laser pointer to it,--flash it on the headlight(s). Even if you reduce the vulnerability from the plate you have the headlights to deal with.
