    Porsche 356

Ever since I used to watch Beverly Hills 90210 as a child, I have wished to own a 356. After months of searching I have found my dream 356 presently owned by a collector in Belgium.
Since this is the first time I will be purchasing a historic car, a car from an individual, and a car in a foreign country. Are there any formalities one would recommend I should perform before making the purchase.

    All help is appreciated.

    Thanks

    Re: Porsche 356

a ppi by a mechanic if its a daily driver and by a knowledgeable porsche garage if authenticity of repairs is important. Plus make sure the title is clear and legit.

    Re: Porsche 356

LB, as u probably know, most 356's are replicas, since the real ones are more expensive than most modern Porsches, so make sure u are paying for the real thing. get in touch with your local P club and have the biggest nerd/fessor/capacity help u out.
    That's what I would do.

The 356 is one of the all-time classic cars IMO.
From a financial POV I believe it also will make a lot of sense.
    Good luck!

    Re: Porsche 356

Are most 356's replicas? I find that difficult to understand. There are many available here in the US for reasonable prices. I do see some replicas but most in my experience are the real deal. Cheaper ones are usually daily drivers that may need partial restoration. Numbers matching fully restored cars are usually semi expensive. Of course Speedsters and the various Carrera engined cars are a different story...

    Re: Porsche 356

I'm from Belgium, I hope it's not a red convertible with a very good price tag??

Check the prices on e.g. www.mobile.de of an original 356 in good condition, and you will see why replicas are popular.
Original Porsche restauration cars begin at 8-10.000 Euro and mint condition speedsters are at 110.0000+ Euro
You can find coupés from the early sixties at a reasonable price, but they probably wont be mint.

    Re: Porsche 356

Thanks Dr.Phil for the advice. I am familiar with replicas such as Apal and Chesil however the speedster in question is an original or at least it carries the price tag of one. However I will be cautious and will try to have the car checked by an official Porsche dealer before I make the purchase.

    Re: Porsche 356

forget a porsche dealer. they will have no idea of what they are looking at. Find the Porsche club in the region and ask their executive if they are any knowledgeable 356 guys in their club. If it's a speedster people in the area would know the story of the car and the local club would probably know about the car and the owner.

Many 356 aficianados would also know the condition and historicaly correctness of the car much better than the dealer would.

Okay Mithras will do. I was informed by the owner that the car belongs to some sort of 356 registry. Does that actually hold any value towards the car being an original and not an expensive replica.

    Re: Porsche 356

In North America to join the 356 registry you have to have an original car. They don't take kindly to replicas...

You may also want to look at these sites, esp. if you have the VIN
    http://www.356a.com/
    www.356porsche.co.uk
    www.my356speedster.com
    www.porsche356club.org
    www.speedsterowners.com
and www.speedster-club.nl is the netherlands speedster club and if the car is from Belgium there might be someone close to look at it or that knows about it.

    Re: Porsche 356

You are getting good advice here. Don't buy the car until you have a true local club expert check it over. I have two 356s (a 1961 Super 90 Roadster and a 1963 original coupe). I have owned many over the years, and can caution you against buying a car that looks good, but an expert has not checked out. If the car is good, then it will absolutely be known by the local club members who can tell you the repairs, the non original parts, whether the engine and chassis match, when it was restored, etc., etc. Take your time and do it right.

Also, I personally would not buy a speedster. They were originally the cheapest 356 you could buy in the 1950s, and IMHO benefited over the years by their rather odd looks. I would go for a late model SC Cabriolet if you want a car that runs well and has nice conveniences. I would take my Super 90 Roadster anytime over a speedster, but that is my taste certainly. If you have the speedster bug, there is no settling for another model.

And lastly, ABSOLUTELY DO NOT USE THE CAR AS A DAILY DRIVER. It is underpowered, handles poorly, and will certainly not survive parking or other damage. Treat the car like a wonderful rare toy, only for nice weekends. There is nothing like the old Porsches to give you a lovely and happy feeling of joy and contentment, but don't put them or you in harm's way.

    Re: Porsche 356

And remember that Belgium has (like Holland) a very moist climate. In Holland, it is not rare to import Porsches from the states, because the climate there is less moist, and thus the classic cars are less likely to have rust.
