Is this too much exhaust tip CARBON?

Car's got fewer than 1500 miles.

Baaaaad gas mileage (17 mpg?), put half a quart of oil in so far.

    Is this normal-looking exhaust tip?

    It's never been cleaned:

Re: Is this too much exhaust tip CARBON?

normal. fortunately the turbo comes with a self-clean mode. just run it harder and you get clean:

Re: Is this too much exhaust tip CARBON?

I have exhaust residue that looks like fine soot on my exhaust too. what is the cause of this and what does it mean? Is this something to worry about. I have done 2700 miles and added approximately 1 litre of oil. I do not understand the term 'quart' that everyone refers to. Can someone please enlighten me.

Re: Is this too much exhaust tip CARBON?

Imperial measurement for volume. I think it equates to 2 pints or a 1/4 of a gallon.

US defn may be different though.

    Regards

    Popolou

Re: Is this too much exhaust tip CARBON?

Oops..., sorry..., one quart in the US equals 946ml.

Thanks eclou, your photo is something to aspire to.

you're driving too slow , do some spirited driving and your tips will look like the picture above, mine do.

I'm still in "break in" period, so I'm cautious about driving the engine hard on a routine basis.

I actually ignore the "break in _hints_" in the manual but I do stay away from redline and over-5000 rpms.

Just wondering if this excessive carbon is result of oil getting past rings, bad fuel injection, or some other break-in-related issue.

Re: Is this too much exhaust tip CARBON?

At Stuttgart, they told directly that the cars need no more than 900km for break in.

Re: Is this too much exhaust tip CARBON?

what is the connection between the way the car is driven i.e spirited or not and the deposit on the exhaust?

look at the picture above that eclou posted, this is how a hard driven car's exhaust looks like after the drive. after urban/slow driving it is completely black, the connection is that hard driving gets rid of the soot either physically or chemically it doesn't matter.

Re: Is this too much exhaust tip CARBON?

it's totally normal - that's the way your engine wants to tell you that it is bored about your treatment

My exhaust looks absolutely the same after a few days in the city and some cold starts, but after 1 hour of pushing it like it was built for, it is looking like this:

Re: Is this too much exhaust tip CARBON?

Geez, these fabulous pointed-oval-shaped tips are starting to look ridiculous (again). Maybe we should paint the insides flat black.

Re: Is this too much exhaust tip CARBON?

Mine looked just like eclou's after the track, now back to all black.

Re: Is this too much exhaust tip CARBON?

So what you guys are saying is that half the exhaust tip is unused and unnecessary? Whatever happened to form follows function?

Re: Is this too much exhaust tip CARBON?

The function of the exhaust tip was to coverup the plastic cut out, so in this weird German logic, form does follows function

OK. That's the plan for me then!

Yeah the "fabulous" exhaust tips, and form/function f-up bothers me alot too.

The only way I tolerate and "justify" them is by believing that they are leaving room for PSE in the Turbo S.
