    Fifth Gear - Audi R8 Vs. Porsche (997) 4S

Re: Fifth Gear - Audi R8 Vs. Porsche (997) 4S

Was rather dissapointed after the hype created last week when we heard about the feature. The tests were daft. I mean, who determines the better car by the longer powerslide? These are partial 4wd machines yet they compare the abilities of the cars sideways?

Not surprised really, as its typical with 5th gear to always stay on the fence in light of such stiff competition.

    R8 v's C4S

Re: Fifth Gear - Audi R8 Vs. Porsche (997) 4S

I thought it was a good test that showed how well of a balanced chassis the audi has. It also showed that well the R8 is an exceptional car, all the hype about the R8 being better performance wise than the 911 is BS. Thanks for posting.

Re: Fifth Gear - Audi R8 Vs. Porsche (997) 4S

The test needs to be analyzed a bit: the 4S,even equipped with powerkit, seems not to be able to cope with the R8.
420bhp + mid engine design has put porsche in a very bad position since the car is more nimble in changing direction, with a lot less oversteer. They are now beaten by a car whose main drawback is, at the moment, to have 2 years or so waiting list.

Standard C4s is, considering the power available from the R8, underpowered and i hope the MY08 will be around 400bhp.
    Otherwise....

Re: Fifth Gear - Audi R8 Vs. Porsche (997) 4S

Yeah, but a 911 has luggage/passenger space! With the R8, your 3rd passenger is the engine! Not a fair fight IMO. I had a poke at an R8 in the showroom the other week. Very nice I thought, but what would I DO with it?

Re: Fifth Gear - Audi R8 Vs. Porsche (997) 4S

That's the second advantage of the 911, the one that at the moment holds me to buy an R8. I need space for a little bit more luggage than the one i can fit in the trunk. 911 in this is very helpful.

The problem is, as usual, that many cars of this type have no space in the back: look at F430, Gallardo and all these ones...

I had a look at the car and a chat with the salesguy at a nearby dealership. When I checked out the tiny trunk (100 L?) and asked what I should do when I want to go for a two week driving holiday with the wifey, he answered: it's easy, we have a special service for our appreciated R8 customers - you take the plane to Nizza and we bring the R8 in a special truck
When I want to get a pure sportscar not caring for practicality there are more exciting options available than the R8 (dreaming of the GT3 again... )

Re: Fifth Gear - Audi R8 Vs. Porsche (997) 4S

remember that the c4s with the PK has only 381hp compared to the 414hp of the Audi, I test drove the R8 on saturday and the noise it delivers compared to the 911 is shattering , but on looking in the trunk as stated in the earlier response it doesn't look practical. The sales guy said if I want to go on atrip I could get a cool fidge in the trunk since its got a 12v adaptor in it. The interior of the R8 is by miles more beautiful to sit in, initially I thought it would be quite small since Audi made the Gallardo, but at a height of 6' 4" and 120kg I fitted in quite fine. The handling is quite similar to the 911 but unfortunately in the UK Audi are not registered at any proving ground like Porsche.I have driven a c4s at the Millbrook Proving gound in the UK and I could say that the chassis of the 911 is a magnificient piece of work. After specking up an R8 with r-tronic (too tall to drive a manual),full leather, CF, magnetic ride, CF blades,B&O, etc is came to about 96 grand. To me that is too much for a car with 4 rings, the same 4 rings will be available on an 19 grand A3. The sales guy assured me that the car is only touched by specially trained R8 technicians when the car comes in for service, heard that loads of times. If I had put down a deposit for the R8 on saturday I would get a car by Dec 2008, deposit 1,500 refundable not bad.
The R8 is a beautiful car but I still have this thing about Porsches and I've decided to wait for the 911 facelift in march 2008, I could assure you that this will whip the pants off the R8 for far less the price.
How much do you think a R* cab will cost ?, R8 with turbo engine up coming R10 or R8 v10 what ever they call it, definitely these cars are overpriced.
Another question I've got is that Audi said they would not make more than 15 cars a day for the whole world, what happen when they increase the range as speculated, would that mean that they would make 2 R8's, 3 R8 cabs, 3 R8 v10 etc per day inorder not to water the brand ?
    i rest my case.

hummm no idea at the moment but i think they will arrange a better production line. They didn't know what would have been the market response to this car and now that many car magazins are considering it as a 911 killer they are having a lot more orders than expected.

    thanks for that !

Very entertaining video, Tiff Needle and Jason Plato are just amazing!!!

I LOVE the R8,how it sounds, the looks but well the 911 is STILL the 911 , I really love the R8, but still my heat says 911

Re: Fifth Gear - Audi R8 Vs. Porsche (997) 4S

Oh suddenly trunk space is very important? You guy's are unbelieveable.

These are performance cars and they are about performance. Have you check the amount of luggage space in the greatest Porsche ever built the CGT? Well, if you don't know I will tell. The amount of luggage space in a CGT is zip, zero, nada.

Re: Fifth Gear - Audi R8 Vs. Porsche (997) 4S

Who buys a carrera GT first doesn't use it as an everyday car, or at least the car is not designed for that use, second he has got tons of other cars to use when he need to go around. Have you seen how low the carrera GT is from the ground? do you think you will be able to go over a normal speed braker (the tarmac covered one) with a carrera GT? Well i can answer you straight away: no. You need to keep trace of them and avoid those roads. Same for underground parkings and all that stuff.

So 911 i think still remains an everyday car, also because of low running costs. Ferrari, lambos and all those start to be less usuable, at least this is what my experience tells me.

Re: Fifth Gear - Audi R8 Vs. Porsche (997) 4S

You ARE yanking our chains, aren't you Nick?

Yeah, and how much in Thrust 2? It's not the point. The point is that when comparing the R8 and a C4S (as in the Fifth Gear test), the C4S is more of a livable-with choice because of the engine layout and interior packaging, and handles very well despite this.

agree they are performance cars but at the same time they must have a bit of practicality, Nick, the R8 is suppose to be an everyday car hence there should be a bit more luggage space

Re: Fifth Gear - Audi R8 Vs. Porsche (997) 4S

The R8 does look good but it lookd like it's not easy to get the back end sliding. The porsche's rear is all over the place, wich makes it the best fun. IMO.

    C4s for me. I mean GT3

Me sense is each Porsche owner is trying to find reason why the 911 is as good as the R8 despite reviews that say the R8 is much better. Beauty, exclusivity, performance, balance, the R8 has it all over the 911.

So what do you all complain about and claim makes the 911 better...fricking trunk space. If anything, YOU are yanking the chain of logic and credibility.

nberry - I agree. The R8 turns out to be such a 911 slayer that 911 owners couldn't handle it.

Re: Fifth Gear - Audi R8 Vs. Porsche (997) 4S

I like the R8, I really do. Not sure I'd change just yet from my 911 (been wanting one since I was a kid). The R8 will not be about in 40 years.

I'm not sure what planet you're on, but in the 5th Gear test, the 415hp couldn't shake the 380hp C4S on the track. They were dead even with the R8 having a little better turn in, and the 911 having better traction out of the corners. The R8 has a freakin V8 and couldn't even get away from a little 911 with a 6 cylinder and rear seats.

Most if not all test involving the R8 and Porsche has been with the 997TT. Those tests have substantiated that the R8 is as good if not better than the TT. For you to extrapolate that a non aspirated 911 is as fast from the Fifth Gear test is plain wrong.

Accept the fact that the R8 is a better car though more expensive.

'Better' is subjective. Toilet paper is better than the finest writing paper when you want to wipe your Ar$s....

The R8 is a great car, yes, advantaged by the mid-engine layout and a big V8. And the Fifth Gear tests are never that scientific. This was a C4S+Powerkit vs R8, and I was suprised that the R8 didn't consistently out-drag the 911.

Don't try to tell us what we actually want though. To me, an R8 is like a very stylish, well-made suit...with no pockets to put your wallet in.

Re: Fifth Gear - Audi R8 Vs. Porsche (997) 4S

I wish everyone would stop trying to compare the R8 with the 997 be it TT or C4S. Honestly, the R8 is a great car! So are the C4S and the TT. The point is they're different as are Scuderia's, Bentley GT's and a Z06's. If you want to compare then look at the Lambo's.
