Re: New car itch begun! (Need pics of yellow 987s)

Good point regarding the uni/metallic paint differences
Actually I feel that the car (depending on sunlight/weather) always offers some new surprises with the metallic paint.
For some reason IMO it's different with the 911 which in general looks very nice with the uni colours. Maybe it's only my memory playing a trick (since most of the old aircooled beauties didn't have metallic paints), maybe there is a more "scientific" reason (which again would be your turn to explain as a design-pro ).

You're probably right - I shouldn't have mentioned the "grey quote" from the Doc's GF O.K. I'll try to rescue the situation: she's just overwhelmed by the Doc's masculine cult (hence she tries to stay away from any "light" colours). Also there is no doubt that she's got the most sophisticated taste - otherwise she wouldn't be together with the Great Man Pooooh, I hope the Doc's blood pressure is back to normal now

Is the pic showing the Baltic Blue I like it a lot

Re: New car itch begun! (Need pics of yellow 987s)

The 911 models have, especially in the 997 iteration, a very wide, masculine stance and, furthermore, strong graphical elements used. Especially the front facia ("Beetle eyes" ) or the characteristical sidewindow theme take a lot of attention. The Boxster aims, in my opinion, at a different target group, less iconic in its appereance but yet very well elaborated.

Re: New car itch begun! (Need pics of yellow 987s)

Whoa, guys! I'm overwhelmed by the amount of responses and loads of tips, hints and suggestions youve all provided! Thanks!

PJ: As much as We appreciate your humble and submissive upsucking-approach in trying to undo your blasphemous comments, you can stop your worrying.
Being perfect, I sometimes forget that others are only human and hence make mistakes, so I forgive you.
Furthermore, my GF is the same GF who not too long ago mistook an Audi TT for a Boxster. Ergo, one should not put too much emphasis on words spoken by such GF.

DC: Go ahead, and let the shop wash your car. My masculinity is virtually impossible to wash off.

OK, back to the business at hand:
First off, I do not yet know if my biz is able to support my getting a new Boxey. Hopefully I will know in a short while.
But naturally this doesnt stop me from driving myself and anyone else nuts trying to decide specs.

I have thought a lot about what Heist said about getting a silver car with bright red interior...and that could actually be a very cool combination.
Anyone seen a Boxster with lipstick red interior? - NOT that 1974-bedroom rug-porn-movie red that some 928's have , but a real red one ??

@ Paralizer: True, the Speed Yellow/cocoa combo is prolly a stinker, and I also prefer the more obvious yellow/black combo. I may also end up looking too much like a chocolate bar wrapping. I just want to cover all options.

@ Schufffo: Thx for all the pics, m8!!
@ Timlb: Whoa, nice! Is that a non-S?
@ Joost: No. I dont fear more comments and bad reactiions likee the one that cost me my biggest client. Au contraire. I am even more set on "doing my thing" and living the way I see fit - regardless of what others might think.
No way in hell I am gonna let a narrowminded CEO tell me how to live. So if anything, a bright yelllow Boxster would be a pretty nice testament to exactly that

DC: Youre right - yellow dials suck IMO. I really find the yellow color plasticky and strange when applied the "wrong" places. And on the other hand it can make a car look absolutely stunning if done right.

@ Percymon: Yellow belts, stitches etc would prolly not be for me. It's a bit overboard and borderline tacky. Centre console and perhaps background for navi/radio would be nice - but it might also be too much.
I think a yellow car with nice chrome/allloy and black trimmings would be cool - it's all a combo question.
    (And thanks for the pics!)

@ 993 Targa: Yup, I've had the same speculations many times - that yelllow should be for really fast cars. However, having felt the abilities of DC's 3.4 987S I must say that this car more than qualifies as a car that would do well in yellow. It's no rocketship - and a GT3 would eat it alive on the open freeway - but here in DK we dont have many GT3's, Murcies, Ferraris etc, so I think I could get away with it

Nightshade: Good tip - however, I am prolly biased about blue cars since my dad had a few - and I never liked them
Seriously, I like blue Porsches, but not enough to ever get one.
Perhaps the Gulf blue - but when push comes to shove, its prolly too loud, motorsport-like and...silly?

    @ Ferdie: Yup, I must be having a midlife-crisis!!...again!
right about the non-metallic colors. As a rule I dont like them a lot.
Perhaps PJ's Mustard yellow would be great - if done as a metallic color?
Can you even order a metallic yellow? That might actually look amazing.

Re: New car itch begun! (Need pics of yellow 987s)

Dr Phil i was interested in what you said about the differences between the 986 and 987. We have the same middle class paralysing tax regime here and i was thinking of a 986s but your words have made me reconsider!

Re: New car itch begun! (Need pics of yellow 987s)

Recently I watch an episode of Top Gear. Richard Hammond an unabashedly Porschephile, was comparing a Yellow Boxster S with a red BMWZ4M. He readily acknowledged that going into the comparison he did not think the BMW would stand up to the perfection of the Boxster.

What happen in the test was very interesting. His love for the Boxster overwhelmed him and his initial reaction was the Z4 did not measure up to the Boxster.

The something strange happened. He stated without a doubt that the Z4 was a much better looking car. He then began to understand how to drive the Z4 and proclaimed after several hour of testing that the Z4 was much more exciting to drive.

His final words were "that if he had to take one car home, it would be the Z4M".

    Message...Dr. Phil, expand your horizons.

Woolfe, are u referring to my comparison to the 3.4 litre 987S ?
The 986s is a truly great sportscar, and clearly the car I have enjoyed the most out of all the cars I have owned. It's just a joy to own and drive.
The 987s 3.4 is just better. It's the same as the 986, but more of the same.
Smoother yet more precise, faster, more beautiful inside and out - it's just a step up in most respects. The only downside IMO is the lighter girlieclutch and the tame/civilized exhaust note. Both can be fixed.

If you consider a Boxster and the 987 is out of reach financially, I'd get a 986S without thinking twice.
Just dont drive the 3.4 litre 987S first

Hehehe, well Nick - owning a Beemer is not something I plan on oin the near future. And especially the Z4 is so butt-ugly, you'd have to be Chris Bangle to like it. Besides, didnt Hammond hit his head in a dragster test? That would account for his conclusion.

Re: New car itch begun! (Need pics of yellow 987s)

Dr. Phil, just move to the USA! With the money you'll save when you buy here you can get a conservative midnight blue/sand 987S just like mine and a yellow/black 987S for when you are feeling a little more flamboyant. And if you set me up with Connie Nielsen when you get here all of our problems will be solved!

Re: New car itch begun! (Need pics of yellow 987s)

Thanks Dr Phil, i will stay well away from the 3.4 987

Re: New car itch begun! (Need pics of yellow 987s)

As of my visit to my OPC yesterday, innocently thinking that I'd only been invited down for the car's birthday treat. Have I seen their new 3.4 black demonstrator they said after all it's identical to mine, except black with no PCM. I wasn't overly interested. I did notice an extra little button alongside the PASM one. Then they took me for a little blast in it, in case I was bored waiting for my car to be fixed. How considerate. I thought it strange as it was the parts manager, not a salesman that invited me along.

I've now got another recommendation for you. Forget about the colour it's not important. Even if you fancy one painted in nipple pink metallic with rosebud leather and yellow stitching co-ordinated with knicker - elastic effect safety belts and hanker after 16 inch wheels painted orange. Don't worry about the sound system (follow my recommendation and you won't hear it anyway). There is only one thing that matters when speccing up your new 987S 3.4 :-

Well well. nberry advises against buying a Porsche. Now there's something new.

I must admit I've not driven the "M" version of the Z4. But I did borrow a 3 litre one for a few days not long after it came out when I was assessing which sports car to buy with an open mind, I must add. At that time I'd narrowed it down to a Z4, Lotus Elise / Exige, MB SLK32AMG (don't laugh) or a Boxster. I'd had a Honda S2000 before and it did nothing for me. If the Z4 was my only experience of sports cars it would have seriously put me off ever getting one. For life.

Ride was abysmal. Far harsher than even a "hardcore" Elise and about as harsh as the Exige, which did at least have the compensation of such superb precision handling. I can't believe that there is any suspension at all between seats and wheels. I don't normally suffer with back ache but I had one for days after I handed the thing back. It was THAT bad. Vision forward was terrible. Great long bonnet that Dr Froyd would have gone into raptures over. Slab of fake aluminium styled facia with tiny little instruments lifted straight out of an X3. No side or rear vision to speak of at all with the soft top up. I do like the rear styling and it has a great engine. But I couldn't hear it because of the constant moans and whingeing from SWMBO sat next to me. And then the very worst thing about a Z4, or any other BMW.

Having to come into contact with arrogant, indifferent and shoddy BMW dealers.

Re: New car itch begun! (Need pics of yellow 987s)

Broadening your horizons is always a good thing. For me, the truth would be that I love the boxster, event hough the Z4M might be faster or more exciting. Problem is, I would have to keep my eyes shut to hide from the uglyness of the Z4. Driving with your eyes shut seems not to be a good idea
Doc, congrats on your opinion about wanting to live the way you want to. Yellow or orange seems to be an excellent choice for you! But you must promise us to go talk with Cram, and order the black rims, ok?

    Hehehe! Thanks, DC!
Will it also help remove unwanted moaning and nagging sounds from biologic elements in car?
My dealer told me the same thing - but I havent heard the sound. Anyone know where I can download it? It's not on the P website AFAIK..?

Re: New car itch begun! (Need pics of yellow 987s)

Just looked on the UK Porsche site and their is no sound there. Haven't tried U-Tube yet. My ever so considerate and sympathetic OPC (well as long as you are spending money there) said that very few buyers are speccing the sports exhaust, possibly because they haven't heard it. Well now I have and it's loud. In a way a blend of 996 PSE and 997 PSE. Not quite as loud as the 996 or as growly baritone as the 997, but IMO a more cultured Boxster type wail / howl, with a distinct growl at idle. It desparately needs the same "fix" as the 997 as it has a cut - off between around 30 -50 mph to comply with the namby - pamby euro drive by noise regulations. The "fix" is the same as the 997 - simply leave a small rubber hose off and blank the end. OPC will do it as part of the install. Retrofit is much cheaper if the car has sport - chrono, because the "Sport" switch doubles as the loudness switch for the exhaust. There are double the hours allowed to fit the switch than fit the exhaust!

Re: New car itch begun! (Need pics of yellow 987s)

As an addition, it might help with your considerations:

you can, instead of painting the car to your wishes, just get a more common and widely appreciated specification and get a colour-coded film applied on your car. It works great with non-metallic colours and, as an addition, saves the original paint. If I would truly consider an extravagant colour as you do, this would be my first choice.

Below is an example of a GT3 in Gulf blue:

    Ferdie, thx. Interesting idea.
Any info on companies who do this? A link perhaps?
And has the Gulf blue 911 had a film-job?
    More examples?

Take a look here, you can find the above shown GT3 there as well.

There are a couple of companies performing this job, it's currently quite essential in Germany since most special vehicles (taxis, police, promotional vehicles) are equipped with these film and returned to the leasing companies in premium condition (reg. the paintjob, which remains untouched) afterwards.

If you'd consider this option, I can check some more ressources!

Re: New car itch begun! (Need pics of yellow 987s)

1,125 Euro plus 150 Euro extra for metallic isnt too bad.
Only challenge is the fact that the car's original color will be visible all other places than on the outside meaning that underside of hood, inside of doors etc will be left in orriginal color.
On the other hand you protect your car, and after a couple of years, you have a brand new car in a "new" color underneath

    Ferdie, thanks for the info
If you have more on this, plz let me know. Detail pics etc are welcome!

Less expensive than a P special colour Of course you have to make sure that the original paint somehow suits the film colour (as you mentioned correctly still visible on a lot of parts).
