    Best radar detector

Not that I would ever speed...but I'm interested in polling the board to see if they use radar detectors and which ones they like best. It's been several years since I've owned one but have been generally unimpressed with performance.

So go at it and give me an education. Please, before I lose my license!

    Re: Best radar detector

Only ever had a V1, and I'll only ever have that one (or its successor). Top quality in detecting and range and the arrows are priceless.

Mike (W8MM) and Carlos (Carlos from Spain) are VERY knowledgeable on this topic.

    Re: Best radar detector

V1 without a doubt. I have both an Escort SRX for my laser diffusing needs and a V1 for my radar detection needs. Best of both worlds.

So the V1 is really king? How does the radar diffuser work, has it saved you a ticket?

    Re: Best radar detector

Laser diffuser, not radar diffuser. It's not legal to jam radar but it's legal to jam laser guns because it's just light. It works basically sending a light signal back to the laser gun used jamming it.

    Sorry,
My mistake but I meant laser diffuser. I'm skeptical, does it really work?

    Re: Best radar detector

You bet your a** it does! Works VERY well I'd say. Our state patrol uses laser guns almost exclusively here in WA and my laser diffuser has saved me every time they've used it on me.

I think I saw the SRX costs about $1500 installed. Is that right?

    Re: Best radar detector

$2500 for me here in WA through Benchmark Motoring. You might be able to find an installer in your area. I think that the unit itself is about $1500.

    Atomic,
Thanks for the info. I know you understand that it's hard to be stealthy in a cobalt blue TT!

    Re: Best radar detector

I believe radars detectors are illegal here and that the highway patrol in my part of the world may use the Spectre radar detector detector. I've heard that the only unit which can't be detected is the Bel STi. Any opinions on this unit or on the sensitivity of police equipment like Spectre?

PM me if you want some help with that. There is a solution to the Spectre problem.

    Re: Best radar detector

    My us$.02:

Cops with Laser guns (LIDAR) use your front plate as a target. If I remember correctly the gun sends a 3x5 foot (guessing) "panel" of infrared laser light to front of car.

If your laser detector isn't in that "panel" you'll never know you're hit. That's why the Laser detector _sensor_ must be mounted near front plate. That's another reason the _highly_reflective_ front plate is required on cars in most states; it's so the LIDAR will work well.

BTW, if you don't have a laser "jammer" or "shifter" it makes little sense to know you've been hit by laser because, then, all it tells you is you've just been NAILED. LASER won't reflect stray radiation that can be detected off the cars in front of you thus giving you a warning like microwaves (radar).

V1 arrows are worth it. I also have 85oo Passport. Arrows are muuuuch better to have; reduces anxiety about WTF is going on when it goes off.

I'm just killing time blabbing..., I hope this stuff is correct.

Please may I ask: Where exactly did you mount the sensors/emitters for the "shifter?" (or "diffuser?" terminology is confusing or I'm uninformed).

Also: when you effectively Jam the Cops' laser don't they get really p*ssed and come after you anyway?

Or do they just shrug their shoulders, let you go like it's no big deal, and try to nail the next hapless guy?

    MMD,
I'm sort of with you on this one. The V1 site has info on the laser issue and how it might pick up fragmented beams allowing for early warning. Realistically, however, once it goes off you're nailed. As for jamming or diffusing they have got to know and I would think that would [beep] them( ie police) off.
Lastly in California they love to cruise up behind you. I'm not sure but I think they can clock you directly that way.
Given all this info I'm not sure what I want to do yet.

    Re: Best radar detector

Ok, here's how the SRX system is laid out on mine.

Control unit. Some choose to hide this but I chose to keep it exposed

    Mute button

    Kill switch under dashboard

LED indicator hidden in map light. Green is on and red is an alert. There's also a hidden speaker that warns you with a voice that says "X-band" and beeping that's unique to each band.

Front diffuser. There's another one on the other side too

Rear diffuser above the license plate.

    Re: Best radar detector

Thanks Atomic80! That's the way to do it.

It's nice that the front diffusers are relatively small and can be "hidden" in front vents. Would be a drag to have them (or a big one) on our front plate set up.

What happens when cops get foiled? They "must hate when that happens."

    Re: Best radar detector

Don't know of an urban region anywhere in world where traffic flows as consistently briskly (and safely) as on SF Peninsula, esp 280....CHP speed enforcement is rather reasonable IMO....

Know several car nuts on SF Peninsula who commute SF-SiliconValley via 599/65, etc (and have been doing so for 10yrs+).....have never felt need for radar detectors, etc; have pristine driving records...and remarkably cheap insurance premiums from high-end insurers....

Would suspect radar detectors are perhaps for those who are forced to live in car-unfriendly locales (i.e., US ex-CA and EU ex-Germany) and for those who cannot figure out simple patterns of traffic flow/speed enfcmt on one's usual driving routes.....

Would never want any aftermkt clown mucking w/ (or anywhere near) factory-spec computer systems of tech-intensive cars and installing tacky/dubious aftermkt hardware (am happy to absorb deprec costs to get new, factory-spec latest/greatest-tech cars every 6mos, to avoid even reputed, auth dealers mucking w/car for any signif svc or warranty work )....besides, CHP often easily "eyeballs" reckless speeds on certain fwys w/inherently high-speed traffic flows (and uses airborne spotting on fast fwys in Podunk)....

Sounds like the opposite of the San Joaquin Hills Toll Road (73) here in Orange County. Nice, long, and straight up and down the hills, kinda like 280. But, you're almost guaranteed to get pulled over by the CHP if go 80 on the long downhills. On the parallel 405, if you 80, you get passed by the CHP.

    Re: Best radar detector

I live in Silicon Valley and admittedly speed. All-in-all speeding as opposed to reckless driving is tolerated. However, this is changing.

Most of my high speed drives occur at early AM hours on the way to the hospital. Many of the CHP and SJPD know me so within reason I get some leniency.

Beyond emergency trips to the hospital I am just as likely to get ticketed as anyone else. I don't feel I'm ready to plunk down $3K on ticket prevention yet. Perhaps I'll just get a V1. Besides, if I do get a ticket there will always be the option of driving slower, at least on the highway!

Interesting diffces btwn fwys....though have had many limo drivers drive me from Montage to Nwpt/Irvine/points North via 73, casually cruising amidst traffic flow at a 280-like 80-90MPH....

Am always amazed re: flow speeds on 280 in rush hr .....but scared by thought of braking/handling abilities of any of the typical 10yo Hondas/SUVs, etc seen on 280 in any emergent deceleration/evasive maneuver in fast, dense, rush-hr traffic flow .....part of why I wouldn't choose to drive 599 on 280 too often; CL63/65 inspire far more confidence if rear-ended (haven't yet taken that F wkend firefighting course )....

Let me be more specific. Morning commutes in the southbound direction, south of the toll plaza. You can speed all you want toward the toll plaza since it's uphill. However, past the toll plaza, it's downhill, and they're waiting.

And to think that 81 is the speed limit here and we're not satisfied with it .

In any case, a good radar detector and laser jammer (I myself have a V1 and a Lidatek LE-30) are worth their weight in gold and will give you some priceless moments.

    Re: Best radar detector

Real risks (aside from inept fellow drivers driving cars/SUVs w/no brakes or handling) are that: in any collision, esp involving injuries, where extraordinary speeds are involved, the guy driving a new $150K+ car will face scrutiny by prosecutors/civil litigators/media to determine poss criminal charges/civil litigation.....

Even in affluent urban corridors, class warfare implics prob exist in any collision involving high-end cars....becomes even trickier in Podunk/less affluent regions.....

BTW, our German pals will know specifics, but my vague understanding is that, even on legendary, derestricted ABs, if collision occurs and excess speed is deemed to be cause, the errant driver may face various charges (incl criminal if injuries/death involved)....if true, I suspect the Munich/Frankfurt industrialist/financier blitzing on derestricted AB in 599/65 largely faces same criminal charge risks in event of collision w/injury/death as guy in CA, esp in context of any culture that has class/consump jealousies.....

Suspect if one is driving fast enough in traffic on well-known routes to feel "need" for radar detectors, etc, a pre-emptive CHP ticket/warning may actually save one from much more severe poss risks of poor risk/reward judgment....

Probably true. My last ticket was about 10 years ago and that was in a Suburban going 8 mph over limit. The reason for the radar detector is recent speed traps being set up locally as a crack down on speeding. This includes the 280 corridor. Hard to swallow 65mph on open highway in a TT. As I suggested earlier in this thread, "I like to drive fast but not reckless."

    Re: Best radar detector

    Atomic,
Thanks for the pics. I have a V1 and usually don't drive without it. It's definitely saved me tickets. That set-up is totally slick. Nicely done.

That's not true, detectors are mostly needed on secondary open roads where the limit is 35/45 and where even 65 can be safe. These areas are notorious for tickets since it is very easy to exceed 35/45 without paying attention, a detector is priceless in these situations and a ticket here will not save you from future risks as you put it.
On the highway it is different and depends on location, a section of I-15N here in SD that I use often is rarely monitored and when I drive a slow 80mph, I get passed by all kinds of people including soccer moms in minivans talking on the phone . never seen anyone pulled over and never a chirp from the V1
