Wow! I have always been a big fan of the Veyron, and is constantly reminded of the amzing engineering. Would love to drive one. Has anyone here driven one?
Very brief drive....was underwhelmed by many aspects of engineering....quality of materials/design; interior ergonomics; controls feel/weighting; exhaust note, etc.....was a friend's car; he also owns 599 which he greatly prefers to drive....
Suspect fatal flaw of extremely low-volume cars like Veyron in an era of increased tech innovation/content is that many aspects of tech require larger-scale R&D/safety testing/mfg vols to innovate/optimize/debug....not clear that Veyron offers much in way of safety engineering innovations (or even state-of-art systems/strucs comparable to CL63)....low-volume/bespoke/handmade stuff may be cute with a bespoke suit where a loose thread/button is annoying but poses no signif risk of personal injury; or a Patek which can't accurately measure time
...but any car used on public roads, even at <100MPH, needs to balance perf vs optimized safety to be taken seriously in an era of 599/CL63/65...
Many engineers (even those at VW
) can maximize some headline-grabbing perf parameters like top speed, etc if allowed to ignore constraints of safety/non-straight-line dynamics/daily-useability/cost....
Interesting that recent NYT article pointed out that VW has only been able to sell 150 of hoped-for 300 Veyrons, despite aggressive marketing
....in past couple wks, have seen a Veyron parked next to a 599 at Stanford Shopping Ctr (PaloAlto)....and two Veyrons valet-parked in front of a BevHills restaurant....so, clearly SF/LA mkts are buying their share of these Veyrons to fetch threads/grub/run errands...
