997S vs 996-x51 HAVING SECOND THOUGHT!!!!!!!!

Today, I went to the dealership to test drive the 997s for a third time. This time I spent over 30 minutes in the car. This car had the pccb, adaptive seats , ect... The first time I drove the car I thought it was fantastic. This time was not as clear. Yes the car has an updated interior as well as a chunkier appearance in the back which I LIKE.. However, compared to my 03 996-x51, here is where it is not as clear cut...
1- I like the front lights as well as the lines of the nose better on the old car. They look more modern...
2-My car felt wey more nimble and tossible compared to 997s. Could this be due to the difference in wheel size??? 18vs 19
3-My car has the porsche sport exhaust which sounds alot nicer than 997s soundtrack
4-x51 also feels wey faster. I don't understtand this since it shouldn't be.
5- will take a 20000 dollar hit if I decide to turn in the car for the new model.
6- Also thought steering on 996 had more road feel to it. I'm not so sure if all this electronic stuff is good; ie. pasm, variable steering. .
7-sport chrono pack.- The only reason I would want this is for the better throttle response. However again, throttle response on x51 felt just as strong as when sport button is on with chrono option.
Imput to these questions would be appreciated.....

Re: 997S vs 996-x51 HAVING SECOND THOUGHT!!!!!!!!

    to be brutally honest,

sounds like you want the 997S but don't want to take a huge bath on your 996 trade, and are thusly justifying keeping the 996 instead of getting the 997S (which you would really prefer).

    get a 996 GT3

Re: 997S vs 996-x51 HAVING SECOND THOUGHT!!!!!!!!

Personally I would wait for the Turbo or GT3 offering. It sounds like you'd be dumping 20K for a better interior (which is still debatable).

    2005 Carrera S Coupe
    Arctic Silver Metallic

    Leather Sport Steering Wheel
    Sport Chrono Package
    Bose Sound Package
    Remote CD Changer
    Navigation for PCM
    Power Seat Package

Order Status -On Vessel!!!!!!!!!!! This is going to be hard to turn down even though I love my 996..

Re: 997S vs 996-x51 HAVING SECOND THOUGHT!!!!!!!!

i haven't driven the car yet but i whole heartedly agree with you about the front lights -- i MUCH prefer the 01--996 lights and agree they look more modern opposed to VW Beattle like. i saw the 997 in person and loved the new interior and the door handles and the 4 slat rear spoiler and greater width of new car but everything else i prefered on the old one. i think -- like so many others -- that the 4S looks the best. And by the way -- we're NOT ALONE in our setiment for the "old" lights.

    what is an x-51?

Re: 997S vs 996-x51 HAVING SECOND THOUGHT!!!!!!!!

after all it is a matter of personal preferences ,but if you put 996 next to a 997 ,you feel that 996 is becoming ooold..

Re: 997S vs 996-x51 HAVING SECOND THOUGHT!!!!!!!!

It's not just the headlights, its the side sills as well. Park a 996 next to a 997 (esp. light colours) and you'll see it immediately beneath the doors and the bumpers (there's an extra crease). I think it's this styling feature which really sets the 997 apart. I guess there's an aerodynamic effect as well since the factory is fitting StoneGuard to the area behind the doors before the rear wheel arch.

Re: 997S vs 996-x51 HAVING SECOND THOUGHT!!!!!!!!

wait a year or more. Maybe they'll make some improvements/changes. The recalls and problems will be fewer. meanwhile enjoy the 911 experience in your 996.

Re: 997S vs 996-x51 HAVING SECOND THOUGHT!!!!!!!!

I think part of the reason a lot of people are having a problem getting used to the headlights is because they haven't really hit the streets yet. Once your eyes become more familiar to the new car you'll start thinking the 996's headlights are out dated looking. That was the case with the 964-993-996 and now 997.

Re: 997S vs 996-x51 HAVING SECOND THOUGHT!!!!!!!!

nah, the 993 was an instant classic especially the turbo S

i would bet that the 996 cars will also retain cult classic status since when porsche introduced the 997, they went a step back and will likely never go with the 996 style clustered light configuration again.

Re: 997S vs 996-x51 HAVING SECOND THOUGHT!!!!!!!!

Agree Amirgt2 when people start seeing the 997s on the streets they will love it .
Moogle yes 993 was an instant classic but thats why porsche have based much of the 997 looks around it ,but naturally modernised the whole look ,and refined the whole package making it arguably the best 911 yet

The 993 became an instant classic because it was the last of the air-cooled engines. I don't think that will be the case with the 996 especially since the lights went through several configurations.

Re: 997S vs 996-x51 HAVING SECOND THOUGHT!!!!!!!!

personally i think that the 996 will be to porsche what the 348 was to ferrari ,a forgotten car ,because it is the only model in 40 years that changed most of the standards ,the only one who broke the continuity ,especially since they came back to post 996 styling. taking the ferrari 348 as an example it was the only 8 cyl. with non rear round headlights ,before(308,328)and after(355,360,430)are all round. i think same thing applies for 996. even tough i love the look of 996tt,c4s,gt2

Re: 997S vs 996-x51 HAVING SECOND THOUGHT!!!!!!!!

If your 996 has the X51 option, I would really, really think about it before taking that $20,000 depreciation hit on the 996 for the 997S, specially if the 997S doesn't have the X51 on it. I owned a 2004 C4S without X51 and sold it to get a 2006 997S with X51 but I think it would be better to get a 996 Turbo or, if you can stretch your budget, get a 997 GT3 or 997 Turbo (even though maybe the 997 Turbo will depreciate greatly in the following years just as the 996 Turbo has.) I'd keep your car if your only choice is the 997S since, IMHO, it's not worth to lose $20,000 in depreciation on the 996 alone for 10 more hp and whatever improvements the 997 has over the 996, even more when you consider the depreciation you'll get on the 997 too: not only will you lose on the 996 but also on the 997 because it will depreciate too! Had my C4S had the X51, I think I'd still own it.

Re: 997S vs 996-x51 HAVING SECOND THOUGHT!!!!!!!!

I believe he already decided, ... 3 years later

Re: 997S vs 996-x51 HAVING SECOND THOUGHT!!!!!!!!

IMO, the 997 has everything over the 996. I agree with the aforementioned that the 996 will be long forgotten in the coming years. (Sorry, no offense intended to 996 owners/lovers.)

Obviously, you must compare apples to apples; so add PSE to the 997 to make things fair. And, I can't believe that the '03 X51 996 is any faster or more responsive than the 997S.

If you are only losing $20k after 3-4 years of ownership with any 911, that's a good thing not a bad one.

    Get the 997!

Re: 997S vs 996-x51 HAVING SECOND THOUGHT!!!!!!!!

The refreshed 997S is about to drop in a few months. No damn way I would take a $20K hit today just to get behind the wheel of a 997 tomorrow.

Hold off for a few months and at least you'll have 3 options to consider:

    (1) Cop the refreshed 997
    (2) Cop the current 997 at a depressed price.
    (3) Stay with your current car.

Agreed, he should wait for the facelift. I didn't read the thread completely.

Re: 997S vs 996-x51 HAVING SECOND THOUGHT!!!!!!!!

this tread dates back to 2004, I don't think he has this problem anymore now!!!

    It's a question from 2004 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Flyer , I am amazed how they do not see it , they keep adding comments and advice for a question that was asked in 2004 !!!!!!
Some people really do need coffee to wake up it seems.
    Funny though.
Somebody suggests even a 997TT , that is news to me , did not know a 997 TT existed in 04.

    Re: It's a question from 2004 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What are you guys talking about, I just took a quick ride back in my time machine

    Re: It's a question from 2004 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry to stray off-topic, but who are you guys going to Vote for in November? Bush or Kerry?

    Re: It's a question from 2004 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One need not be a psychic to know, back in 2004, that there would eventually be a 997 Turbo available. Regardless, the 997 Turbo suggestion was posted in 2007 when the Turbo was already old news, even if the original question was asked in 2004. Guess there are others who also need a cup of coffee to wake up too.

    Re: It's a question from 2004 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cibergypsy , I was being sarcastic with Turbo remark.
But maybe you are correct in answering questions dating from '04 and I am just not seeing it
