    Ink on leather shift knob

Looks like a dash of ink from a pen on my sand beige shift knob. Anyone know how it can be removed without damaging the leather. Its Kind of annoying since I did not do it.

Re: Ink on leather shift knob

    Uh oh!

    Not good.

One thing which works with ink is Texize K2R, uses carbontetrachloride and something like corn starch to lift ink stain.

BUT the question is what will it do to the _painted_ leather in our cars.

It will definitely remove leather's oils but you can recondition it with leather reconditioner. Will it remove or damage the leather's pigment?

But don't take my word for any of this: looks like you have more internet research to do before you try anything.

Re: Ink on leather shift knob

I did some internet research and found that oddly enough rubbing alcohol seemed to work for others. Should I try it?

Re: Ink on leather shift knob

Try it on some other leather first , but , the damage is normally done from the amount of rubbing one does on the spot in question , leaving a abrasion mark..The ink would bug me big time though.....

So , if it was my knob , I would rub it , and if I left a stain , then I would just order a new knob....

Re: Ink on leather shift knob

Do NOT use rubbing alcohol. I discovered the hard way that alcohol will remove the coloring on 997 leather. I had a typical black eyeglass case in the little pocket on the floor of the passenger side where it got very hot and the black coating apparently melted. When I grabbed it to get sunglasses, some of the black got on my terracotta leather seats and handbrake. I have yet to find anything to get it off without removing the leather coloring!

Sell the car and get a new one! Eugh!

Re: Ink on leather shift knob

Ex wife was a major museum conservator. They used purified mineral spirits (not the same as paint thinner?) to clean/restore/conserve verrrry old leather artifacts. Same stuff avail. in hardware stores. Again you have the problem of our "painted/pigmented" leather and traditional "dyed/tanned" leather. Try on inconspicuous area. Heck, if it screws it up: get a new knob.

Re: Ink on leather shift knob

Denatured alcohol or witchhazel or baking soda/vinegar mix always does the trick.

No RUBBING! Lightly dab and swipe.

Dry and recondition leather when finished.

You're not rubbing it right - get someone else to do it.

And..., just so we hit rock bottom: Get a woman who is so skilled she can suck the chrome off the ball of a trailer hitch.

A valet left a pen mark on my cream leather (BMW Individual Champagne Merino leather). I used a very small amount of rubbing alcohol and removed the stain 100%.
