    AMS test - Audi S5 vs. 335i

    Today auto motor und sport has the test including the clk500.

    The BIG surprise is the dynamic performance of the S5: clearly a cut above the bmw's, who we know is pretty good!
    but even futher, in the so called 'ausweichstest' (thats the lane change) the car is superior to the RS4 and the Gallardo spyder!!
    In slalom and ISO-wedeltest the performance is on par with the Porsche Turbo!!
    They claim the dynamics of the car are excellent, the new engine/transmission layout has eliminated understeer, the brakes are excellent (feel and performance), the stering very good. It is also worth noting that the car was tested with the standard 18" wheels and not the 19" which would have further improved the results!
    0-100 measured in 5.3, vs bmw 5.6
    0-180 15.6 vs 16.9
    Interestingly also the elasticity measures (like 80-120) are slightly better/on par with the bmw who is helped by the biturbos with 400nm at 1500revs already.

    alltogether this car clearly delivers to it's great sound; and the m3 better be very good or the rs5 will trash it..

    0-100 5.6 for the BMW? Isn't that much slower than elsewhere quoted?

    These AMS results are similar to those in last Auto Zeitung. Only AZ stuff finds S5 prone to sudden oversteer and little bit unstable on high speed braking in straight line... I drove S5 and I did not liked it that much... It still feels front heavy, at least to me.

    yep: C/D test: BMW 335i automatic 0-60 in 4.9 sec.

    they got wind from behind!!

    Not really. O-100 km/h times were always around 5,5s. The best european 0-100km/h time for the 335i coupe was afaik 5,3s (autozeitung, automatic, now with manual 5,5s)

    0-160 : 11,6s
    0-200 : 18,3s

    braking :
    100-0, cold : 35,1m
    100-0, warm : 34,5m

    335i coupe (manual)

    0-100 : 5,5s
    0-160 : 11,9s
    0-200 : 19,1s

    handling : 1:44,6 min
    slalom : 63,0 km/h

    weight : 1596kg

    The S5 won the comparison.

    thanks for posting the AZ numbers. they kind of reflect the AMS comparison. AMS measured the acceleration only up to 180kmh.
    I look forward to the review from sport-auto when they will test the car (they already did a 335i supertest).
    The AZ comments regarding the dynamics are interesting, but I dont really give too much on them, as AZ is not really top league. Still a BMW will always feel more sporty than the Audi with 4wd, but for once it doesnt make it quicker...

    The AWD RS4 does a really great job on the road. Try to follow it out of narrow bends even with 500hp-RWD and you know what I mean.

    True. Audi's AWD is excellent IMHO. On the wet road even 997 Turbo do not have any chance against RS4. Trust me on this...
    BTW, honestly I like new S5 very, very much...

    No, but the Audi guys in Beijing was told from the factory that it will be one year from S5, which means we will see it in Geneva/Melbourne motor show. China is a massive market for Audi (most luxury car there is Audi!) and they get all the good stuff first. Want to buy one too?

    thx Way. I always liked the RS4, but its looking a bit aged. the M3 was on my list, but i HATE the interior. i love to get a GT3 but cant afford it yet.

    so the RS5 is the my target.
    I love the lines of the S5. if the RS5 follows the current design trend, it will just be a S5 on steroids. perfect!

    hopefully they will get the steering feel right this time!

    u been putting on some miles on your AMV8?? yet to see u on the road.

    That's pretty impressive considering that the S5's real competition should be the upcoming 335xi, which will be a little slower that the i, of course; and a bit more costly.

    but shouldn't you compare the s5 with the alpina b3? i mean both have the same power, nearly the same price... but the alpina will be by far more exclusive!
