    Got a go with 964 carrera 4

I never thoguht I would get my hands on such a, old car but it happened.

It looks really cool. You fell like some bad boy in that car.

First, the steering. I've never driven a car with such a heavy steering. I think there's no assistance at all. It's just you and the machine. It was really hard to turn. Compared to the 987, the boxster is a city car.

Then the pedals. My god there so hard to push. Ther are not like in recent cars. Both the break pedal and clutch are attached on the floor. On a more modern car, they are attached from above, under the dash. (I hope you understand) Makes a really weird drive because of that. I have small feet, and I had to get my foot up to brake correctly. If you don't, you're pushing the pedal way too low and the car doesn't brake at all. Really hard to explain in english. Sorry.

You basically have to push the pedal down, to the floor, instead of pushing it back like on an ordinary car. I had never seen anything like that.

The clutch was as difficult as the brake pedal. I actually wasn't very good with it. I don't how it's supposed to be used. All I know is that I had a burning smell wich wasn't good. I think, when you go into first, you must release the clutch fully instead of keeping it half pushed while you do your first few meters. I don't know. Maybe the clutch was already old. Who knows.

My legs hurt when I got out of the car. These are really heavy hardcore pedals. Actually, it's ust an old school 911 wich is too hardcore for my taste.

The RS4 I had later that day had a soft clutch compare to that one, and was going a lot faster.

Not a friendly car for rookies.

As for the handling, the car felt hearvier than a boxster. Rock solid but haevy. I don't know how muany ponnies this one had, but it didn't go that fast. IMO, a porsche should feel nimble and light. This one did not. So it was hard to have any fun with it. Making its @ss move a bit was impossible. Under heavy acceleration, the boxster will slide nd the rear wheels will spin. 964c4 was stable as a train.

Conclusion: too slow, too heavy, pedals too hard, not city friendly and the hadlind was not so good.

A boxster is ten times better.

Hope my review made any sense to you guys.

Re: Got a go with 964 carrera 4

The 964 C4 did have power steering, but maybe the owner swapped the steering rack for the manual unit in the RS...

    Power is 250hp.

BTW, a 964 is NOT an old 911. Try driving a nice one made before 1974 - totally different experience

Re: Got a go with 964 carrera 4

Amazon, that is my dreamcar! 964 C4, silver, cup mirrors, correct rims, and clear lights... Never driven one though, but this is the car I'm aiming for!

Re: Got a go with 964 carrera 4

Joost, there is no such thing as Porsche correct rims, these are CupII rims

Not aiming at the 996 gt3 rs anymore?
    or both..

Re: Got a go with 964 carrera 4

Always aiming for the rs. BUT one needs to be realistic.
The line of work I am in now, I will never be hungry, but I won't be a zillionaire either. A 964 is something of which I am sure I will be able to afford it at one point in my life. Not that I won't try to do "better" though!

Re: Got a go with 964 carrera 4

How could you not have known about the "standing" pedals, or at least the "standing clutch", it's 100% Porsche tradition...

I've driven a 964 RS a couple of months ago, while it wasn't an easy drive, I found it incredibly enjoyable just because of the heavy controls, at least you FEEL you're driving/controlling the car.

IMO you're expecting wrong things from an older Porsche, you have a different approach to "driving pleasure" than most Porschists do, I think..

Re: Got a go with 964 carrera 4

The 964 had a really hardcore AWD system, so perhaps that's why you disliked it. Regarding heavy controls, just grow some muscle and deal with it .

I would rather go for a 986 S. It's a cool looking car though. But you'd better have a second car because if you do traffic jams with that bay, you're gonna go nuts.

Yeah, I didn't know. I guess I should be shot for that. I'm more in new cars than old ones. The one I'd love to drive is a 993. Maybe it would suit me more.

I was not excpetcting anything from that old porsche. It was a new experience. I did most of the driving in brussels, in the city full of small roads and speed cameras. It's definitly not the place for a 964. On the highway and fast roads, my experience would have been different.

I had on the ring though. That was better. It's a car that needs space to strech its legs.

A 987 boxster is just fine in heavy traffic. It's comfortable, smooth, it can be driven like an audi. The 964 can't.

New porsches are more my thing.

Well, the 964 is not a car for girls either.

It's for people who want an old school porsche. I deinitly don't.

But it's just so beautiful to look at.

Every car model from every manufacturer has different pedal feel. And how any one car feels to you probably has a lot to do with what you drove minutes before or in the days before.

When i drove a 997 C2S this summer the sales guy was talking about Porsche pedals attached to the floor and not from above. Maybe that has something to do with it. Never driven a 964, lots of other 911's though.

RC's first Porsche was a 993 and the first thing he noticed was the really heavy steering and pedal feel (which I agree with), if memory serves me correctly. I think you're better off with the 996. The C4S and the Turbo are really nice rides and I think that a 996TT X50 will be a good buy in a couple of years.
