    Porsche lagging behind?

    Guys,

As per my 1st post in this forum I am a new comer to the Porsche world (CS arriving in September) so do not judge too strictly... Questions: how come a $120K + car does not have a bluetooth, overhead display, scrolls through all radio channels when using the steering wheel buttons vs. the preset ones, Ipod connectivity. Hope it has MP3 compatibility and some way to connect an Ipod...

I appreciate your comments / views / suggestions

    Re: Porsche lagging behind?

My 08 CTT (still waiting for, currently being recalled) does not come with Ipod connection. Even the KIA come with ipod connections. It does suck.

...and that's how they became the world's most profitable car company.

Concerning Bluetooth connectivity, I've personaly experienced this to be flakey on other vehicles; namely BMW. Many phones have limited compatibility. Some can make and receive calls but the internal phone book cannot be accessed. Some won't even pair at all. I've not even tried my Nokia N95 with my BMW because I doubt it will work. I keep an old Sony Ericsson T630 in the car with a multi-sim in it. When I enter and exit the car I have to remmeber to turn that on and off. It pairs with the car via Bluetooth fine and I get the contacts on the display. I'm not bothered about Porsche's tray solution (I prefer it) because I won't need to remember to turn the phone off when I leave the car because it will do it automatically. I cannot do this in the BMW and if I leave the T630 on, all my calls end up going to the car. Texts always go to my main handset regardless and I don't mind that either.

I believe there is an Ipod compatible adapter called ICE. I don't want an Ipod, because apart from looking good they aren't technically that great, and would prefer something generic which takes memory keys as long as it can be controlled from the Porsche. I believe the ICE supports memory keys, in additon to Ipods, but I don't know if it is possible to cycle through MP3s on them. I'd love to know.

Hi, thank you! I guess I am the only one for now. When ordering my 2008 CS I was 57th. Hopefully, others will join.

    Many thanks for your advices.

    Re: Porsche lagging behind?

Recall in the early 90's many high end cars have car phones in them. Now days a car with a built-in car phone would look silly.

Within a short time, whatever gadget the car is equipt with will be equally dated. If you must have bluetooth, you can buy a portable speaker and clip it on the sun visor for under $100.

One of my cars is a 1980 Land Cruiser. It has IPOD integration. I went to the local auto parts store, and picked up a cheap radio, which came with that capability. Porsche is not lagging behind as long as it allows plug-and-play. Personally, the reason I drive a Porsche is to experience the vehicle engineering. Gadgets are really secondary. The fewer the better. IMHO, the PCM is way over-engineered. An aftermarket navigation unit such as Garmin is easier to use, and costs 1/10 the price. As technology advances, one can put in a newer Garmin with ease, but there's no simple way to upgrade the PCM.
