    should I get a GT3 or a GT3RS ?

This is somewhat of a continuation of my post about what to buy about a couple weeks ago. The other cars are still in the running, I just haven't found the right one and/or the right deal yet, but, I have found a few Porsches that i'm thinking about and I was wondering if you could give me your opinions.

    1. 2008 GT3, I can spec it any way I want, and I was thinking about a non-standard color to be a little bit different. it's $10k over MSRP

    2. 2007 GT3RS, ceramic brakes, full leather, xenons, chrono and a couple other options, but not many, about a $140k MSRP, he wants $31k over MSRP

    3. 2008 GT3RS, ceramic brakes, xenons and a couple more options, very few options.. about a $137 MSRP, he wants about $35k over MSRP

I know people said not to pay over on a regular GT3, but I have been looking and there's not any at MSRP. especially 2008's, and that one I can put as many or as little options as I want on it.

The two RS's are not loaded with options so if I was to put a ton of options on the regular GT3 and pay $10 over, I would be within $25-35k of the RS... So what's a better deal, what's the better car for me? I drive my 997S on the weekend and to the track once a month at best...

Another concern is that in 1 year, or maybe 2 years, will I be sorry I paid that much over for an RS? Or say I get the 2008, of which they are only making 60-ish for the US, will that hold any value?

Or should I just say F it and buy a Z06 (everyone says it's the best bang for the buck) and keep my 997S tip and have the semi-best of both worlds?

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

    Re: should I get a GT3 or a GT3RS ?

First, I'd suggest you read "The Test" in the August issue of GT Porsche (The Purely Porsche Magazine). Compares the Carrera 2S, 911 GT3, 911 GT3 RS and the 911 Turbo.

Second, my guess is you are shopping in the LA Basin. I would take some time and get on the phone and shop around the country. You should never have to pay more than MSRP from a reputable dealer. There are honest dealers out there.

    Re: should I get a GT3 or a GT3RS ?

No, not striclty shopping in the LA area, I would buy it from anywhere I could find it. I made a few phone calls and they all pretty much laughed at me. They either said, no more 2008 allocations or had 2007's but were asking over and they weren't the color or options I wanted. And in the RS, if you can tell me where I can get one for anything less than $25k over, I would buy it in a second...

    Re: should I get a GT3 or a GT3RS ?

GT Porsche magazine (UK), June 2007, did a head-to-head comparison betwenn the GT3 and RS. The conclusion was that on the street the extra cost of the RS isn't justified; on the track, subtle differences were found in the RS's favor. The RS was said to be the more desirable car, as far as passions go.

Conclusion: "The base car (GT3) has it nose in front. It's staggering value for [the] money."

Could you briefly summarize their conclusions, or give a link?

    thanks

    Re: should I get a GT3 or a GT3RS ?

I remember reading a story on a flight where they pitted the GT3 and RS against one another.

The RS's cost WAS NOT justified unless you were planning to be on the track 90% of the time.

On the street, the only thing you'd be paying for on the RS is for the "badge appeal" ... money wasted in my opinion.

    Re: should I get a GT3 or a GT3RS ?

I truly enjoy driving my GT3. However, I would jump at the opportunity to own an RS if it is reasonably priced. I had my shot but they wanted 40-50K over MSRP. To me it's not worth, unless money is not a problem. If you ordered moderate amounts of options for your RS you looking 140K plus 35k. Your looking at 50-55K difference. Thats alot of money. Lastly, I would love to have an RS.

So do you really think that if I started calling every Porsche dealer in the country, someone will have one at MSRP and/or have one I can order and not pay over? Id so, does anyone have a clue where to start looking?

    Re: should I get a GT3 or a GT3RS ?

I would take an RS all day long because I would then be the schiznit with the baristas at Starbucks instead of Mr. Joe Blow in a white GT3

    Re: should I get a GT3 or a GT3RS ?

HWJunkie, put a post up on rennlist, 6speed and rennteam saying that you are looking for a GT3 @ MSRP and have cash in hand. Someone from a dealership will contact you when a customer decides they really don't want that GT3 they ordered (I know it sounds crazy, but I'm surprised at how often it happens). If you have cash in hand, you'll walk out a happy person, if you have to finance and take your time, you'll lose the car.

If you want to go the route of searching yourself, you can use this google search for a starting point, but note that they may not have the car in inventory as it may be pre-sold: http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=...earch&meta=

    Good luck with your search!

    Re: should I get a GT3 or a GT3RS ?

get the GT3, unless you plan on doing club racing where tenths and hundredths of a second matter, the RS is not worth the money. The RS does tend to settle a bit quicker through rough road at teh back end but it is not noticeable unless compared babck to back with a GT3 and most drivers will not be able to tell the difference.

but yeah, there is nothing at MSRP, good luck

    Re: should I get a GT3 or a GT3RS ?

I say you only live once and if you have the coin, why not get an RS? But if you have to get stretched tighter than a drum to get the RS not worth it.

    Re: should I get a GT3 or a GT3RS ?

I got mine at MSRP, but was just lucky. I called almost every dealer and could not get an allocation. Just on principal, I refused to pay over MSRP.

One day I was looking at 6speed and a dealer posted one for MSRP and I jumped. Basically, as fcracer said, you have to be ready with cash in hand. Call some of the big dealers and leave your name- Champion, Suncoast, etc. When the shipments come in is when you will hear about buyers backing out.

Every time I drive my GT3, it makes it worth the hassle of finding it.
