Is It First Gear Or Is It Me?

What I noticed in my brief TT test drive was first gear winds up so fast (to redline) that my shift into second is comparatively sloppy and slow. BTW, I've had manuals in perf cars for decades so I should be able to get it "right."

Is there something I'm doing wrong?

I don't even know if there a problem to be honest. It just seems first gear is geared tooo low.

Re: Is It First Gear Or Is It Me?

1st gear is necessarily low, since the car is heavy and the engine doesn't make that much power until the engine is under load and can make boost. A higher 1st gear would require more clutch slippage and wear...

    MMD,
    I don't think you're doing anything wrong.

Interestingly, the tip starts in 2nd unless you put it in 1st. Even when you start in 1st it revs extremely quickly bumping it to 2nd before you can blink. However, the gear ratios are different in the tip which is 5 speed as compared to the manual 6 speed.

I know we've covered these issues on the board before but the quick rev in 1st seems to be a consistent issue.

I think this is why the Tip is faster. I constantly run into the rev limiter in first. I am not fast enough into second to get 3.9 Second runs. Must be getting old!

it is you and not you. the TT's first gear is not too short, it goes well over 40 mph. It just redlines so quickly that you think it was short, it is not. It is just faster than what most people are used to.
try to anticipate things a little ahead of time and you'll get it right.
I had this problem solved in my car after the tune which included a 7300 redline, so I don't bump into the limiter anymore.

Re: Is It First Gear Or Is It Me?

Do not start in 2nd. The tip does it (for economy) because it has a torque converter.

For regular, non-jack-rabbit starts, just start slow, ease on the gas and shift to second quickly after the car rolls.

If you are having that problem without engaging the Sport Chrono switch, it means you have a heavy foot and you are not going to like the faster e-gas map. I'm the reverse, I have a light foot and prefer a more sensitive pedal.

Re: Is It First Gear Or Is It Me?

When you get on the car in 1st, you must immediatly be prepared to shift to 2nd. Must forget the view and only watch the tach. Must concentrate. I think 1st goes closer to 60 than 40 mph....it's in the manual but can't remember data.

Re: Is It First Gear Or Is It Me?

It's very easy to bang the rev limiter while full throttle in first gear.

Sounds great to get the 7300 rev, but don't you risk big time any chance for warranty if an engine overrev or whatever occurs. They say, however, you can put it back to factory spec before service visit. Is that what you have???

The way I understand it is you can hit the rev limiter all you want with the throttle, it'll just cut the throttle for you.

But if you break thru the RL and go beyond by erroneously engaging a too-low gear in downshifting you're screwed.

The program can be reversed to stock but I am sure porsche will find out if the engine blows due to a wrong downshift.
I am personaly enjoying the tune so much that I don't care about the warranty, plus the engine has already proved itself to me on the track .

Re: Is It First Gear Or Is It Me?

I had just heard all the times you are above the factory set 6800, this is recorded on the tt's computer. So every time you hit 7300 is recorded. They say when Porsche sees this, this could be a negative on the warranty if engine problems result downstream from whatever.

Re: Is It First Gear Or Is It Me?

You're just used to your C2S! I had the same problem, the car is so explosive after the turbos spool up that its hard to catch before redline! Fantastic!

Re: Is It First Gear Or Is It Me?

Yes, everytime you hit the rev limiter it is recorded.

If you are driving a manual, it also records when and for how long the engine is forced above redline by a bad downshift.

That latter WILL affect your warranty and resale.

Re: Is It First Gear Or Is It Me?

Why would taking your car to the rev limiter matter? That's the whole point of the rev limiter isn't it?

It matters because going over the rev limiter implies a missed shift, or worse, bad driving, abuse.

Hitting it will not matter, but going over it forcibly by downshifting to an inappropriate gear forces the engine over the limiter manually and can damage the engine.
